No cable or broadcast TV for over a year, due to circumstances beyond my control.
Are there any good series I can catch up on that are on DVD perhaps? What have I missed in my media exile?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You've missed nothing. You're invariably the better for it. Celebrate.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's see:

Straight people have finally bowed down before their non-breeding over(gay)lords, Connie Chung is a robot, and Norm Macdonald's new show is really, really awful!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and some chick fellated joe millionaire off-camera(yet her mic was still on!)...

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

er, who *is* it? Kaga and Whitney Houston?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Adrien Brody and Halle Berry.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

why was it significant (i'm sorry, i've been away from tv...)

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You missed a nuclear explosion in LA, Sydney waking up in Hong Kong w/o memory of the last two years of her life, the Pres's youngest daughter was kidnapped and I was hoping that she'd die, Brock Lesnar became the Next Big Thing.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor. She presented it. He was so excited that he won and well, Halle Berry was right there, so he just went for it.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the best reason to win an Oscar I bet!

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought for a moment there that Brock Lesnar had won an Oscar!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What were you enjoying the last time you were watching TV, Orbit?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you missed madonna and britney spears making lesbianism acceptable for young white women everywhere.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Last year? Simpsons, King of the Hill, WorldLinkTV Videos, Sopranos, Sex and the City, Garry Shandling, Arlis$, Futurama, Space Ghost, Powerpuff Girls, AbFab, Coupling, Poirot, La Chaine Histoire, incomprehensible Korean soap operas, Mystery!, Mystery Science Theatre, weird things that come on late at night.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Simpsons is still around, but I think most people agree it isn't as good as it used to be (and disagree mostly on how far the bar's dropped); I think the upcoming season of Sopranos is the last, but maybe they're doing another one after that (if it's been a full calendar year since you've had TV, I guess you missed the most recent Sopranos season, though? Cause I think that was in January to March, or thereabouts...); Futurama reruns are on Cartoon Network now, I don't think they were before; 2nd season of Coupling is on DVD now (yay); oh, and the current season of Sex and the City is the last one -- they're airing the season in two parts, so the first half has been run, and I think they'll rerun it before the final bunch of episodes runs, which I think is ... in a couple months?

On HBO, you might or might not like Carnivale, which is about to wrap up but will probably be rerun; I love it, most people think it's too slow-paced, it's somewhere in the Twin Peaks/American Gothic genre, except period, set during the Depression. Everyone's who's seen The Wire seems to like it, but I haven't caught it yet.

Reality TV continues, with grand inertia and furious indifference.

I realized the other day that there aren't really any sitcoms that I watch anymore, and am sort of hoping I get some Soap DVDs for Christmas to make up for it :)

There's a recent thread on hour-long dramas that pretty much covered what's what in that area of broadcast TV.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ER has become so stupid it's entertaining again! They dropped a helicopter on Dr Romano's head.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tep! That eye and hatpin indeed serve you well ;-)

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I can recall, sweet Fanny Adams.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't tease a girl like that, Dan! For a sec, I was actually interested.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, and Adult Swim has been expanded to cover every night.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

But everything Dan wrote is true!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Buffy went off the air.
Dawson's Creek went off the air with a ridiculous and terrible finale.
The West Wing has been made more palatable to stupid people.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dude, that thing with "The West Wing" happened halfway through season 1, it's just no one but me noticed.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

HERETIC

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, TWW would have been a lot worse if I hadn't been carrying this Bible in my crotch.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Because if you're going to do something as absolutely lame and disrespectful as drop a flaming helicopter onto Robert Romano, the LEAST they could've done is not written the damn death scene like a cartoon. Did he have to flip face-down on the concrete and yelp, “NOOOOOOO"? I think not.

Pardon my bout of insane laughter. Savor this, Dan (I don't say this v. often): "Apologies, Master Perry. I stand corrected...."

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Wolfe is giving a talk on C-Span 2. Referring to the title of Jack Welch's autobio, he comments "I'm not sure the gut was the operative organ in his life."

actually, there is one other good thing on tv - Curb Your Enthusiasm

Sharpton is on SNL tonight though. Let's see what he can do.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 30 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 30 November 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Why oh why do we only get the shiteiest TV from the US over here and 6-12 months too late? They still havent shown all of Futurama (tho Ive seen it all now anyway thanx to kazaa), we havent got the Wire yet, everything else is way behind so gets spoilered... gah I hate Australian TV sometimes.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dude, that thing with "The West Wing" happened halfway through season 1, it's just no one but me noticed.)

Actually, I kind of noticed that watching the Bravo marathon over Thanksgiving (you'd mentioned it elsewhere).

It does kind of get 'dumber' when the President takes a more active role in the show, and when Sorkin started making every policy discussion is a recitation of facts and the usual arguments from both sides, rather than something, oh, realistic.

But it was still the best show on TV after that, just not as good as the first few.

Now, it's just cheesy.
