Once again
The line, "the sidewalks are crowded with Love's ugly children" which was used by Nick Cave was orgianlly written by who? Blake? Rimbaud? Verlaine? Baudelaire?
I forgot and find the book that containes the original poem.
I need this info ASAP. Long story, really.
Thanks to anyone who knows.

Dara, in what song?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oliver Wendell Holmes maybe?

kephm, Monday, 24 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

google suggests it should be "The sidewalks are filled with love's lonely children", but offers no clues as to the answer to your q i'm afraid.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 24 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Cave used it in the song, "Deep in the Woods".
Suzy, I owe you money for the phone still!!! I plan to be back in April again. Woo-hoo!

Dara (Dara), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Its actually by the Birthday Party, not Nick Cave, should that help at all - also as above, the line is "The sidewalks are filled with love's lonely children/the sidewalks are full of love's ugly children"

I know there's a band called Loves Ugly Children but googling found no more than a load of terrible 3rd rate goth poetry and Cave fan sites. Sorry.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

gee trayce that mustve surprised the shit out of you
yeah i know those guys in that band, i don't think they talk to me any more tho

duane, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds a little like Baudelaire's Eyes of the Poor. Or maybe Yeats' "drowning love's lonely hour in deep twilight..."

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it's the B'Day Party. Since Mr. Cave claims credit for lyrics I naturally said, "Nick Cave".
And yes, I know what the line is in the B'day Party song, also.
I was quoting the original line where the word "crowded" was used as opposed to "filled"(the substitution).
Yeah, google was of no help and even worse I KNOW that THEEEE book that it's from is on my shelf(along with about 500 other books!! arrggg!!!)
Yeats is a good guess. I'll dig Yeats out tonight.
I was begining to think it was Blake, but that would be Mr. Morrison who "directly quoted/borrowed" from ol' Bill.

Thanks for the help everyone. I guess it proves that I have to start re-reading some of my books again!

Dara (Dara), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It is George Bataille (trans. Fred Botting & Scott Wilson) according to amazon.com.

" [...] nocturnal irony that cannot be washed away by solar radiance. Love is for fools and god knows I'm still one, the sidewalks are full of love's ugly children. Lovehate is tattooed on the knuckles of blood and iron"

(catchphrase in the worst French sitcom ever)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually, do the French have sitcoms? I suddenly can't imagine that they do)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

so this has nothing at all to do with the question at hand but I have to tell Suzy and Kate something: around the corner from my work there's a coffeeshop that I get chai and scones from daily, and there's these two women, one of whom looks vaguely like Suzy from the pictures I've seen of the latter, one of whom looks nothing like either of you, but IN MY HEAD I've begun thinking of them as "Suzy and Kate." just thought you'd like to know.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but didn't they make the French Belgians or something. OK, that may have been Fawlty Towers.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos is kind of creeping me out.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck you too, N.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, I didn't realise there was a history to this.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, not really. but I'm not trying to creep anyone out. it's more about how various ILx folks have infiltrated my consciousness even though we haven't met in person. is that clearer? anyway, sorry for overreacting, N.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dara (Dara), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok I just re-read the Eye and I can't find the passage. I wonder if it's Tears Of Eros(which I borrowed from a friend and gave back years ago)

Dara (Dara), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Answer my email, damn you!

(Heh)

(BTW, the yahoo address is the only one that's working at the moment.)

Happy thanksgiving and all that!

(Sorry I didn't know the answer to your question, I'm not as smart as I used to be. I can only tell you useless things about Iron Age Britain or the Tudors, not about Symbolist poetry...)

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 27 November 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, then it's the Tudors over tea next time, dahling! Even tho I never finish my tea(bad me bad me!).

Dara (Dara), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, but that's because you're an Ex-Goth, and you have this perverse desire to read the tea leaves. Not realising we all use orgone-inducing pyramid-shaped bags now.
