NYC Pools

I'm writing some listings for a certain weekly paper re NYC pools, beaches, and swimmable rivers(!) (good timing right?). The two pools I have experience with are Hamilton Fish (huge neighborhood pool at Houston and C) and Asher Levy (mellow smallish affair around 23 and 1st I believe). I wonder what the pools in Brooklyn are like . . .?

What are your experiences with NYC pools? Which are the good and bad ones? What sort of vibe does your neighborhood pool have? In-door pools welcome as well. Have you ever gone after-hours, like those crazy Kids? A long shot, but have you swum our tranquil rivers? (Please e-mail me personally as well if you don't feel like posting here for some reason.) !Muchas gracias!

I haven't been to the Metropolitan Pool in Williamsburg but supposedly it's okay. Also the pool in Astoria Park in Queens is gigantic, you might want to mention that one.

I love Astoria Pool. It is huge and it has a gorgeous Art Deco design.

The Asher Levy indoor pool is always crowded with old folks, like even at 8 am. There's usually 6 or 7 people per lane. There's a nice looking private pool around 26 and 1st ave. Here's more.

I swim in the Metropolitan pool almost every day. The facilities are perfectly fine, and it's almost never too crowded, as the fast lane goes really fast and most of the old people confine themselves to the slow lanes. Also, the locker room is a prime place to eavedrop on conversations about the old neighbourhood, or about hair loss (for some reason at least once a week I hear a couple of men talking about male-pattern baldness).

(Do any of you brainiacs know which pool the Kids scene was filmed in?)

I could be totally wrong, but I think it was the Carmine St. Pool. That's the one with the Keith Haring artwork on the walls.

I kind of think it's Carmine too, but I can't find anything that says it for sure. (I did find that that's where Raging Bull was filmed at least.)

Join the Dodge YMCA (Atlantic Ave. Brooklyn) - big ass pool, basketball courts, gym, classes, etc. and very cheap.
