Someone just asked me in my capacity as AV Guy and I did not know. Allmovie doesn't mention it. It's a comically jewish name but is he? I am confused.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume he is but is this just presumptious?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He is.

Jonathan Z., Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a comically jewish name???

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

does Hugh Grant?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. This is why he wanted to make Schindler's List.

(He is also a black female ex-slave trucker who used to raise sharks and dinosaurs and contributed to the SETI programme regularly with a keen interest in artificial intelligence, precognition and spoiling perfectly good childrens stories.)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

he also directed several GREAT episodes of Columbo - still his zenith (tv >>>>>> movies)

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The pope shits where he stands these days, I heard.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Spielberg? i prefer his considerably less expensive Latin American counterpart...

knowing that I make movies, every time any of my relatives see me (usually when I visit for the holidays or some such), I get the "HE'S THE NEXT STEVEN SPIELBERG ISN'T HE? THERE'S THE NEXT STEVEN SPIELBERG RIGHT HERE!" treatment

my other jewish friends who make movies get the exact same treatment from their families

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell them you want to be the next Al Goldstein instead and that will take care of the problem.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Porn Singer

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I will eternally regret not thinking of The Jizz Singer until the moment I hit submit there

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that regret like every day, man, it fades. It never goes away, but it fades.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

here's a fun game my boyfriend and his friend played once in the car while at a stoplight once:
1. say "steven spielberg" over and over again in as many different voices as you can think of, until you are finally just making noises that have the same number of syllables as 'steven spielberg'
that's all.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

that works better with 'amos zeroeue'

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should start a parody thread: "Is Steven Seagal jewish?"

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is Stephen Sondheim goyish?"

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is Cameron Diaz a shikser?"

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is Stan Getz Mexican?"

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"is stan musial muslim?"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is Cameron Diaz a shikser?"

That's shiksa, Chuck! Get it right, man;>

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

no, he's right! common pronunciation!

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Can Rabbi Lionel Blue boil a canadeluch?"

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...

OMG this ALWAYS happens to me too! :) :) :) :)

It is kind of comforting to know that this phenomena is happening to wannabe Jewboy/Jewgirl filmmakers the world over.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha! next steven spielbergs unite!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I had loads of friends who made movies.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I didn't. Actually, no, it's alright, cos John wants me to be in a French Western this summer. wtf?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

fortunately my cousin's own stated ambition is to become the next steven spielberg, which takes any potential heat off of me.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, eisenstein was jewish. how come no one says, "oh, little benji, he's going to be the next eisenstein!"

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

how about "here's the next doris leachman!"

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

'Lubitsch'
'Allen'

'Brooks'

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

lubitsch was the jewishest jewish director ever

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Shurely Jewiest.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard he starred in anti-semitic comedies in wartime Germany before directing. (Probably not like Hitler levels of anti-smitism.)I love his work but, when they showed some of these at the recent Lubitsch season, I have to say I gave 'em a miss. Interesting if true though.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

they're not anti-semitic. i've seen two of them. he plays a character that is a kind of affectionate stereotype which would have been enjoyed by jews and non-jews alike. it's not PC by today's standards, but neither does it indulge in the kind of anti-semitic caricature that eventually fed into the nazi propaganda. he is very funny and very jewish-looking. ethnic humor could be much more caustic in those days, such was the world. see also al jolson.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the films don't make a huge issue of his jewishness, i.e. he does wear a yamulke or walk around eating kosher sausages or anything. in fact i can't recall anything that explicitly rendered him as jewish except for the name of the character and the mannerisms which were without doubt those of jewish caricature, also lubitsch had the jewiest face ever.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

does NOT wear a yamulke

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's kind of what I assumed.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

at least some of these features BTW were totally independent productions, which lubitsch financed himself after being rejected by the german studios of the day. eventually one or two of them sold well enough to get him hired as a contract director, and the rest is history...

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Lubutsch wins on account of The Shop Around The Corner being such a classic (and unrecognisedly so?)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

More important:

Is Norman Jewison Jewish?

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He isn't.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Kubrick's films have much to do with Judaism, but they are definitely the work of a Jewish director.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

He looked like a rabbi for most of his life, and that counts for everything.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

True: There is statue dedicated to Norman Jewison's dog in Toronto.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason norman jewison keeps coming up today (and no, it's not because of "the statement")

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

who is norman jewison?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

director of "in the heat of the night," "moonstruck," "the hurricane," among others.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see "The Statement".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you may be the only person in the world! it's like the least-publicized movie (even in canada, where you think it'd get the red carpet) by a director of his supposed stature in a long time

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised i've never heard of this guy, but then i haven't seen any of those films

for some reason i think i've heard the name and mixed it up with sidney lumet

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

who is jewish i think btw

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I like some of his work. But I'm wondering if he's ever gone on record about the Israel/ Palestine thing. Hmm...

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

why should he?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I always get Norman Jewison mixed up with Norman Lear -- who is Jewish, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, well he gave $1 million to Israeli victims of Palestine and Schindler's List brilliantly presents the horrors of the Holocaust - yet ethnic cleansing now takes place by the Israelis so I'd think he'd be as good a person as any to make a statement. Though I fear I already know what it might be...

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

right so why are you asking?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Norman Jewison also directed Fiddler on the Roof

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

he's trolling amateurist, just ignore

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

C-man, go click on my link upthread.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you may be the only person in the world!

It is becoming a familiar feeling, my dear s1ocki.

I also always confused Norman Jewison with Sidney Lumet.

Fact:Most of the reason that people love to work for Sidney Lumet is that his shoots are strictly 9-5, and thus his crew always get a night in with the kids and a decent night's sleep, a rare thing in the film industry.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

he shot a movie in my aunt's apartment once! apparently he was very nice.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Which movie?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trolling and I don't see the link.

I think Spielberg's best was Jaws - one of my top 10 films. I adore Schindler's List too. In saying that I much prefer the dark reality of the same year's Escape from New York to Raiders of the Lost Ark which never really did that much for me.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

adam--"guilty as sin" ("three men & a baby" was filmed there too!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the Melanie Griffiths-as-covert-Hasid one?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

no that's "a stranger among us"!

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna say, he's straight out of a nazi propaganda film! there should be coins spilling out of his pockets tho

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Steven Playmountain. It suits him, doesn't it?

Bumfluff, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Queer: I was thinking about this sort of thing during RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK last night.
