after watching jaws with the roommates for the 1,000,000th time last night, i have decided that the young Richard Dreyfuss aka Matt Hooper is the sexiest man alive! is it the beard? the spectacles? the receder? perhaps the blue corduroy jacket and necktie? the wine swilling? i dunno, you decide!

maybe it is his vast knowledge of shark species! help!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the chutzpah. see also The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (and maybe the vast amount of drugs he was doing in that era).

As a younger person, I found his characters supremely annoying, but I've mostly gotten over it.

(there is a character in Jaws who has the same full name as me who meets a gruesome end)

after mordecai richler died there was this cheesy gala in his honour here and richard dreyfus made a special surprise appeareance as duddy kravitz

it was one of those things where someone else was 'playing' him in a reading from an excerpt, and he stepped out from behind the curtain and was all 'that's not how I remember it!' (furious applause)

Saw a nicely restored digital print of Duddy Kravitz this afternoon. Seemed slightly more patchy to me today than when I used to watch it over and over on TV in the '70s--the lead actress is a bit bland, for one thing--but excellent nonetheless. Denholm Elliot's Bar Mitzvah film was as insanely funny as ever. Don't know if this is Dreyfuss's very best performance, but it's right in there with American Graffiti, Jaws, and Close Encounters. They had a Skype hookup with Ted Kotcheff after the film--you'd never guess he's in his 80s. He had a funny story about Mordecai Richler and Saidye Bronfman from when the film opened in '74:

Bronfman: "Well, Mordecai, you're looking well for a St. Urbain slumboy."
Richler: "And you're looking well, Saidye, for a bootlegger's widow."

Screened Inserts last night. X-rated chamber film from '76 about the peep show business in the 1930s w/Dreyfuss doing excellent scenery chewing as a washed up silent film director reduced to a six picture deal filming porn in his living room for producer Bob Hoskins. The rest of cast is as follows: Veronica Cartwright, Brian Davies, Jessica Harper (and Jessica Harper's nipples*). Would make a good double feature w/Day of The Locust.
