Shall I post this to ilx, or shall I put it on my blog?

do you ever have this dilemma?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I do, and ilx always wins.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I have this dilemma, but for now, my blog is back in cold storage, so ILX definitely wins. As ever, I think I need a genuine focus before I start bloggin again, and kind-of-amusing asides and ponderances don't really cut the mustard. So that's what I use ILX for.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I generally wish you'd put a lot more things on Grandpont Genie 'cos I rather like it.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This was why my blog went cold.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, thanks Marcello!

It's to do with how much hassle it is, my general doubts about the blogosphere and whether I'm really a part of it and, um, the fact that ilx looks a lot more like the interface I should be looking at at work!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What N said. Everything seems to get saved for Stylus or here now. I have an idea of where to take AusPishFish (a direction I've been hankering after writing about for two and a half years now!), but haven't really got the time to do it at the moment (work is rather busy).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Reasons to ask a question on ILX:

1) there is someone which specific knowledge relevant to the question.
2) You really really want people to talk about it for five minutes before turning it into discussion of shampoo commercials

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I post it on ILX, then, when I think, 'this is so brilliant no-one should read it' I also post it on my blog. Why not two locations?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there are *far more* reasons than that!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and I know ppl actually read ilx!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew: what if your question is about shampoo commercials?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to decide on a direction for your blog, with my new one I decided to try and be less colloquial and really only deal with music to avoid overlap with ILX etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

but if your blog aint about music this is obviously harder

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would anyone post to ilx?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sad as it is, the things I seem to think might seem important somehow in reflection go on the blog. Fewer people -- very few people -- will see it, but what the hell. It's an environment I feel I have some degree of control over. It's probably the only place I have any kind of influence on at all, thinking about it.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i post it on my livejournal because i don't think anyone will read it....

possible m (mandinina), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i would say that ilx is for things that you want people to respond to and your blog is for things that you want people to just have to absorb and like it.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's a question it goes on ILX.

Or less diplomatically, if I'm interested in what other people think it goes on ILX. If I'm interested in letting people know what I think it goes on one of the blogs.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly enough, 99 times out of 100, I expect posting on here to result in no response. The percentage is sometimes a little better on the blog. (Depending on the time of month. Or something.)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you could have your blog on ilx and avoid the problem altogether

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

mitch wins!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to decide on a direction for your blog

trouble with this is that not all ppl are specialists. Some are generalists who have difficulty deciding on a direction for anything in their lives, blogs included.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"you could have your blog on ilx and avoid the problem altogether "

Isn;t that what the "This is the thread where I..." threads are?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't 'have' to decide on anything. My mood or what's currently interesting me dictates the direction. I am conscious of the probability that what interests me doesn't interest many other people, though...

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaargh! Please stop being negative in every post - it makes reading what you write a sadly inevitable task.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I have added to my blog today.

Sometimes, I wonder whether I should've plumped for one of those blog providers who enable ppl to post comments in response to blog entries. Sadly, the only emails I attract by having my email address on the blog are spam and I can well understand if ppl don't feel inclined to email me about the subjects I write about....ppl have busy lives. A comment can be made briefly in a matter of seconds.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Me? Don't fucking read it then. And shut up. I mean, I'm pretty tolerant of the pseudo-andolscent knobs who keep droning on about wanking all the time so. Tolerance is good.

(Anyway: the TRUTH is, many of the things that interest me aren't particularly mainstream, i.e. not the kind of thing you discuss at the train station or on a message board about wanking, so my point was truthful, not negative.)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(Adolescent, even. Thank god I wasn't making a smub point about spelling!)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

many of the things that interest me aren't particularly mainstream

this certainly makes *me* more inclined it to read it!

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Smug even! I'm on fucking GREAT form today! Can anyone guess why I ain't made any money from writing? Three guesses only.

Oh, Mark... don't get too excited. It just means I talk about David Bowie and Orson Welles sometimes. In between rants about the state of my life and society.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately tho, you don't appear to have put a link to it from yr details here on ilx (I just checked on the statscock)

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, there's a link on the (chrissie1068) page. It should be on the statscock page, but if you change your nick, some bug in the ILX software forgets the extra details.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(You'll notice the statscock page also still lists my old nick.)

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, it has an extra 'S' in it (I hadn't, actually).

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I should've posted that the recent UK release of Touch of Evil is a bit of a bummer. Not even the production notes/memo of the R1 version. Is everyone asleep yet?

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the pic of the B'ham Crimbo lights, if only coz it has the name of the city on it - I've never seen that on Christmas lights anywhere before. The Oxford lights this year are unspeakably dull.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Chrissie, what ILX are you reading that you think there's no interest in Orson Welles and David Bowie?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Orson Welles!!!

possible m (mandinina), Thursday, 27 November 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There probably is, but there's a lot more interest in wanking, which doesn't interest me much at all. That's my failing, I imagine. Anyway, I might as well post it somewhere where it'll mean something (in an odd kind of way), rather than cast it adrift in a sea of endless noise to be forgotten by everyone (inc. me) ten seconds later.

The blog is definitely a love-hate thing, though. It's a pretty weird thing to do.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Thursday, 27 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
I generally wish you'd put a lot more things on Grandpont Genie 'cos I rather like it.

I am posting to it more now and will continue to do so, but always with the nagging feeling at the back of my mind that hardly anyone's reading it. I think that the group blog may be winning the war over the individual blog, but I have never written anything for Freaky Trigger because I've never been sure if what I write is good enough, or if ppl would want me to. With an individual blog you can set your own standards and be as self-indulgent as you like I suppose.
