Flying cross-country for the weekend

So one of my best friends from back in Connecticut is throwing one of his famous Halloween parties. I'd love to go, I'd get the chance to see many friends I haven't seen in years, the party is guaranteed to be a blast, etc. Ok, so my creepy ex-boyfriend will be there, but so what. I checked airfare yesterday, and the cheapest from SF to NYC was almost $500, so no way. I look now, and it's around $250!! So I think I'm gonna go. It's fairly extravagant, but I'll have a great time. Should I wait longer and see if the fares drop more?

In other words; spending upwards of $300 to fly across the country for one day to go to a party; Classic or Dud?

Classic for hedonism and dud on bank account. To add to the fun, stay up all weekend drinking as well--so you'll hallucinate but imagine the stories you can tell for years to come.

Do it! Do it! Do it!

It's at least as classic as doing it to see two baseball games. Except I'm only spending $130. You should try hotwire.

hotwire

Kris, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, go Sean go! Live a little! Do it! $130 does sound better, though.

I wonder if I ever met this Doug fellow, your DJ friend. I filled in as a DJ at Squeezebox a couple of times, back when they had a downstairs lounge. It was about 6 years ago. I believe my friend Paul, who was the 2nd string DJ after Miss Guy, lives in SF now. Do you know him? We used to work at Boy Bar together. Enough of my sordid gay past.

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ah, but what of your sordid gay present arthur? ;)

i felt oddly exhilirated knowing that an inordinate amount of money had been spent on my weekend plane trip to seattle. i never do insane things like this. evah.

Well, I'm thinking of heading out to my hometown gay bar, Frank's Place, in the guise of Dirty John Bonney. Aaar. But as it's below freezing in CT tonight, I'll probably just sit around the fire at home with my mom and my sister. Sordid enough for ya?

GO GO GO GO 1
HEDONISM RULLZ

Arthur, I'm not sure if I know who Paul is, can you give me any more information? Does he DJ here in SF? Anyway, my friend Doug DeMille is bald, shortish, heavyish, 40 years old, and Mediterranean looking. He filled in for Guy 10 or 12 times. I do remember the downstairs lounge at Squeezebox, those really were the days. In fact that whole scene inspired me to become a DJ, which I finally did for a year here in SF at the (once) great rock/biker bar Hole in the Wall. I don't go out to clubs too much anymore; part of it is I find it a lot easier to pick up cute boys on the internet, which was a big reason I went out in the first place!

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, re Hotwire, it looks like a potentially big savings, but I'm gonna stick to conventional routes for 2 reasons. 1) You don't find out what time your flight is until you've agreed to buy the tickets, and I need to arrive in CT in time for the party. 2) Once you've confirmed purchase, you can't change departure time or cancel. I bought tickets on Priceline once with the same agreement, and at the last minute something came up... I was out $500. I'd rather have the security of paying a little more but knowing I'm not locked in.

And since hedonism does indeed rule, my mind is already mostly made up; I'm going!

His name's Paul Likins, he's in his mid-thirties, looks younger. Sort of a more nebbishy Chris Cornell. I don't know if he's DJing there, I think he moved there to go to graduate school. Doug's not ringing a bell, I'd probably know him if I saw him. I used to hang out at Squeezebox every Friday the first couple of years. I was thrilled with the Hole in the Wall the first time I went there 2 or 3 years ago, there's no LA equivalent. Has it gone downhill?

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has it gone downhill?

Yeah, it's totaly dead now. But clubs and bars come and go, maybe it will pick back up.

So, I'm thinking I'm gonna wear a full-head mask, and not say anything when I go in, and then remove it later and surprise everybody... this is gonna be fun!

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once flew all the way to New York just for a one night birthday party, from the UK, and it ruled!!! Do it!!!

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I had the funds, I'd fly down to DC for my brother's shows. So yeah, absolutely go for it.
