Anyway, 10 years ago I was a highschooler in Wichita, KS, and gangbanger paranoia was in full swing. Stories of beatdowns and shootings every week, your parents telling you not to react in any way if a car flashes its brights at you in the night... Don't wear Jordans or Starter jackets outside school or home, etc.

I like the bit of hopefulness given by Boyz. And Juice has Tupac, so duh.
The Wayan bros parody is pretty decent.

nothing makes me laugh more than the scene in Menace II Society where Caine gets in that dude's vehicle to rob him of his rims and then makes him order a double burger for him.
"I SAID WIT CHEESE!"

That's because he isn't dead, guys. Neither Jr. or Sr. Do a search on the internet, he's very much alive.

Menace is so much better than Boyz in the Hood it's not even funny. Actually, it is funny. Fishburne's character's name in Boyz is "Furious Styles."

Menace = lols
― Bodrick III, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
Menace has been called an homage but I really only see that in the final sequence, which is almost Boyz verbatim.
Really though the main difference is that Cuba Gooding's character tried to fly straight, as did MOST of the people he hung with, whereas Caine and his crew were all homicidal thugs at one point of the movie or another, other than Sharif.
But I think Menace's violence was unsettling...I mean I see mostly movies with guns and shooting (think I've seen maybe 3-4 in the last 6 months that didn't feature a gun homicide) and the opening sequence made me uncomfortable.

revive for one strange bit of Boyz 'N' the Hood cast member "trivia" that's a bummer: Lloyd Avery, who played the triggerman who killed Ricky (Morris Chestnut), well...
After his film debut in ‘Boyz N The Hood,’ he went on to pursue acting as a real career. He landed a short stint on the acclaimed ‘Doogie Howser, MD.’ He was also cast by John Singleton in ‘Poetic Justice.’ He also appeared in the classic Wayans Bros comedy film ‘Don’t Be A Menace To South Central.’ In 2000, he went on to appear as Nate in ‘Lockdown,’ then the following year, he assumed the role of G-Ride in an indie film called ‘Shot.’However, instead of being an actor, Lloyd decided to become a gangster, moving from his middle class community to “The Jungle,” the notorious Bloods breeding ground. He even went so far as to tattoo “JUNGLEZ” above his eyebrow. Not too soon after wrapping ‘Shot,’ Avery was arrested for a double homicide. He was sentenced to life in prison for the crime. In 2005, he was murdered by his Satan-worshipping celly, Kevin Roby. In the cell, Roby bashed him on the head and strangled him. Avery’s body wasn’t discovered until two days later when Roby laid it on a pentagram and performed a Satanic ritual over it.

anyway both of these films are really great. i think some of the violence *seems* absurdly over the top in terms of frequency and casualness but at the time it was pretty accurate. L.A. County had a few hundred homicides last year, but in 1992 there were 2,589.
― omar little, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)
Also think they're both great. Boyz is more sentimental, Menace is meaner and harder.

that's just a map of L.A. itself and not the county. the lighter regions are the city of L.A.
