To show our good intentions (i.e., proving we're not trying to wipe out another culture), the West should convert to Islam and adopt strict Sharia law, Taliban-style. Negotiations over terrorist handovers could then be done in an atmosphere of good faith, and plus, some of the social ills plaguing the West would be solved at a stroke! How about it?

Since I am a woman and quite like leaving the house without the company of my father, not to mention earning my own living and going out on the raz on a Friday night, and taking into account the fact that I don't like the idea of being buried up to my neck and then stoned... need I bother answer this one?

An alternative suggestion is that should Mr.Bin Laden ever be captured, our finest surgeons should perform a sex change operation on him, returning him to Afghanistan unscathed but permanently altered to see how he appreciates living under the Taliban's oppressive regime as a woman. And it would sort out all those beard- related hangups too!

Apropos of nothing, I'd love to surgically enhance Bernard Manning, transforming him into a Pakistani Muslim and then move him into a rundown council tenement in Bradford. Do you think it might alter his outlook somewhat? I suspect it probably would.

I'm betting UBL does not follow the Taleban's laws. Apparently not that many people living in Afghanistan do.

My only Afghan friends left there about seven years ago - they don't like the Taleban much. They are Islamic but they don't have beards. They don't get drunk either.

Toraneko, having heard first-hand accounts of some Afghani women via a charity I'm connected with, I don't think most Afghani people have much choice when it comes to following the Taleban laws.

Incidentally, if I keep coming over all serious on this subject, it's probably got something to do with the fact that the cousin of a good friend who's Pathan (Pakistani, from close to the Afghan border) died after a racist attack in Denmark last week, so all sorts of things are making me feel sick and angry at the moment. I will get back to flippant comments soon.

Well, fake it. My mother and her siblings were nearly put up for adoption when she was six 'cos her mother went to the nut box (long story) and her father was judged by local church meddlers not to be able to provide care for kids whatever his merits. Their bacon-savin' solution was to PRETEND to be Jehovah's Witnesses for two years to gain access to the $15/week home helper supplied by the JWs.

Every time Church Lady came over the cry went out: "Kids! Quick! Get that Christmas tree out on the porch!"

I suspect my best/oldest friend on this board might have the odd contribution on whether or not converting to Islam makes the slightest difference to fundamentalists.
