i have not seen one in three years because they cause pain but now i have a huge toothache and now i have to see one. Discuss

anthony, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've not seen one in over 8 years cos they wanted to re arrange how I look. Also would have given me wisdom teeth grief which is not happening to me.

Ed, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch 'Little Shop of Horrors' before going!

dave q, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

about three or four years ago I hadn't been in 13 years, then I finally built up the courage to go expecting to be butchered (I am very scared of the dentist), I needed three fillings - result!

Consequently it is ten years before my next check up.

chris, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm blessed with strong teeth - I went to the dentist every six months until I was 18, then infrequently until three years ago and I haven't been since. No fillings, evah! Of course, I'm terrified that next time I go, I'll need several...

Madchen, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On the contrary my teeth asre crumbling and are about as week as thin ice. Dentists in my youth were constantly trying to fix this problem but made it worse. Upshot is I have not been to the dentist in 15 years. Never had a toothache, pain, or any kind of trouble. I am convinced that something is going to fall apart sooner or later but I won't worry til it happens.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dentists are great. They are the Noise artists of the medical world! Metal Machine Medicine!

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've not been in 5 years...I have an irrational fear of having my wisdom teeth removed. I will not risk a general anesthetic.

jel, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was four or five, my dentist decided to extract some teeth and put my to sleep with gas for the operation. Of course, what he didn't check was whether I was allergic to the sleeping gas, which I was. I nearly died and haven't really cared much for dentists ever since. Wish I'd sued...

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus when I was 14...I knocked my front tooth out, and had to go to the dentist every week for about 2 months. They stuck the old tooth back in, took out the root...then it 'died' and I had to have a false one. It was supposed to be a temporary tooth but I still have it. I'm considering getting a gold tooth, as everyone in IL* wants to be a pirate.

And Anthony, if you have toothache, it's probably time to go. Be brave, good luck!

jel, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dentists vs. Orthodontists.

Orthodontists are on a whole new level of evil. Say, the dentists would be a bumbling house burglar as opposed to the sinister, wicked, long term wretchedness of the Nightmare Nick stylee orthodontist. WITH HIS BRACES! You bastard!!

I of course ruined my teeth by being so pleased to get my braces off and pissed off when I got a damn retainer that I never wore it. Orthodontist was not at all pleased with me. BECAUSE I THWARTED HIM! Although, I bet I would have great teeth now if I had just put it back in after that damn presentation they made us do @ school JUST AFTER I came back from yr orthodontist.

Anyway, you go to dentists when yr little and you get stickers. Lot more fun. And I had good teeth as a nipper so no traumatic experiences. I was knocked out with sleeping gas too! It made me feel WRETCHED when I woke up. Ah, childhood memories of puking on the roadside by a Little Chef.

Sarah, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the enamel on the front of my teeth has fallen off, though initially in a shape very similar to the glue with which the orthoduncist stuck his brace to my teeth. Orthdentist is dentist evil squared. They make money out of your wonky teeth, so I swear they make 'em wonky first.

Pete, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And Anthony, if you have toothache, it's probably time to go.
Not really. I suffer a lot from toothache. My detist says it's just nerves. He's right: it usually coincides with my migraines.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go soon Anthony, it'll be far worse if you don't.

I've not got any fillings or anything, they're clean but uneven. So the dentist got bored and decided to de-wonk them: I had a brace for 3 years and now, 13 years later, my teeth are exactly where they were before the brace happened, they just slowly moved back. I know, I found the original plastercast last year. I once bit a dentist and drew blood (by mistake).

chris, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'm one of those weirdos that actually enjoys going to the dentist because I like getting all that damn unavoidable build-up crap off my teeth every six months. I didn't even mind the orthodontists in my childhood life either, and now my teeth are reasonably lurvly. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate hate hate dentists, always have. The first time I went was when I was 5 to have some teeth removed, the dentist yelled at me for being a little crybaby! In my experience even doctors aren't that bastardish.

It's been about a year and a half since I last went and I really should go, but I will probably end up like anthony and only go when I end up in pain and absolutely have to.

Nicole, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind the dentist, all you have to do is lie there with your mouth open, what's not to like...? Also I have never had anything bad done e.g. braces, fillings or whatever. The scary people are the opticians who try to trick you with their devilish questions (is it clearer with? or without? - er, I don't know! You are trying to trick me!) and peer into your eyes and breath creepily on your face. Or hairdressers who shout at you for not having your hair cut enough.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't seen one in six years cos i thought my teeth were invincible but now i can't eat sweets anymore cos it hurts but then even more scared to dentist.

di, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been in about 3 years which is not good. No insurance has kept me from going. I hate dental surgery. My gums don't heal well and I fear anything that keeps you from eating and drinking properly. My main dental crime is eating lemons. In the past a dentist firmly told me I was not to eat lemons anymore. I'm bad.

Samantha, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I AM GOING .
I am missing work and school and everything but i am being gassed and i can take my CD player to override the nasty drill sounds.

anthony, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last time I went I had a cleaning, which is covered by my insurance, and x-rays. The dentist wanted to take out and re-do four of my fillings. They don't give me any trouble even though they are about 15 years old. I suspected they just wanted to make some money so I never had it done. She also wanted me to get my lower wisdom teeth out, but I didn't do that either, as they are crooked but not impacted and don't hurt at all. The upper ones had cavities and I was anxious to get them out of my mouth so I just braced myself when they stuck the needle in the roof of my mouth to numb me. You just have to take care of your teeth, and drop your dentist if you don't like him or her and get one you trust, just like a doctor.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a good idea about the CD player, I'm going to try that too.

Lesley Higgins, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dirty minds of ILE, you have failed me! Quoth Emma: "All you have to do is lie there with your mouth open. What's not to like?" and there's not one rejoiner to point out the screamingly obvious dirty implications. The world is really crumbling.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was a youngster (late seventies) my dentist had a large screen, raised in front of the dentist's chair, that pulsated with different psychedelic colours when he played his Frank Sinatra tapes. It was meant to relax you.

Can you still get gas when you want a tooth out? That stuff had such a unique smell - can still bring it to mind now - although for some strange reason I always used to wake up in tears.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just go. Rottten teeth require more painful procedures than only kind of rotten teeth.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Sterling, I think everyone is tired of cheap innuendo. What a pity.

Emma, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am never sick of cheap innuendo, n or innuendo of any type - just haven't been online today - I still think anthony should go and see the dentist, try and take his mind off things by trying to feel up the cute dental assistants.

Geoff, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To Sterling: Even Homer nodded.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh!

mark s, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't go for about three years until last month when I realised that they might destroy my records or something. Didn't go because a) Am terrified, even of them using the whirry cleaning thing and b) because last time after they did just this, managed to spit the swilling stuff onto the floor, not the conveniently positioned receptacle. Consequently waited until this dentist left out of shame.

Bill, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah, you should have worn the retainer, you would have looked like mrs.whats-her- name's daughter that sam is set up with in 'brazil', and that's a very good thing.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

sorry cozen.

i'm going to the dentist next week and boy am i glad because i have some kind of swollen root that's almost poking out of my gum. it hurts to the touch and sometimes bleeds. :-(

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

whenever i have any pain anywhere near my mouth/throat i'm worried that it's cancer. but cancer doesn't roll like this, it's clearly something to do with the root of one of my teeth.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

i went this morning. i'd say the worst part of a typical clean is the hook working the front of the bottom row... i do owe a lot to my dentist though with my childhood being riddled with dental accidents. my favorite of these was a fall i took around 5 years old running up the stairs. my mouth landed right on the corner of a step and pushed my whole top row of teeth straight back... dentist had to reach in and pull them back forwards. i've mentioned this in the "ask freud dream area" but to this the worst nightmares involve losing a mouth of teeth and when i would smoke bud a good anxiety attack wasn't complete without the sensation of losing my teeth.

had a filling replaced today. they pumped up the gas HIGH this time. for about ten minutes I was completely out of my mind on drugs and floating to the lite sounds of SOFT ROCK and loving it; Chicago never sounded so good

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

they had the news on at my place, they also took the television off the ceiling... i appreciate that i don't have to worry about being decapitated but i do miss the easy watching. they had that story of the 3 guys killed in the depressed woman's road rage collision. wasn't easy to relax and kept realizing that my legs were crossed and my fingers interlaced with sweat-inducing pressure in both areas

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

i go for long stints without going to the dentist. my teeth suck. every time i go i have a million cavities, now i am having a root canal.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Dentists are evil sadistic fuckers. I used to date one (who the fuck takes someone for a meal and talks about ABCESSES?!). My teeth are a mess.

I once went to a practice run by Doctor Fr33lov3 and Doctor C0cksh0t, with a phone number ending in 6969. I was never offered extras.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

what necessitates a root canal?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

basically, if the decay is so deep that it's gone into the root/nerve, they need to clean out the entire root, essentially making it a dead tooth.

dentists are sadistic fuckers. they are crazy, all of them. no normal person would want to make their living by drilling poeoples teeth.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

it's not all that bad actually, it just takes a really long time. mine is on a back molar, so he had 4 roots to do really. they use little teeny hand drills that look like multi-colored screws to drill em out. it's fucking nasty in that respect. feels like someone is machinin your tooth with a file. but it doesnt hurt, just a little sore once the novocaine wears off. then you have to go back and get a real filling and/or a cap.

it's more long, arduous, and costly than painful.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

i fucking hate dentists.

czn (johnson), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

As much as I hate & fear dentists, they're infinitely better than lasting toothache. C'mon, you have to give that up, I've had roots die while I was uninsured, I've had old fillings break down so extensively that my (eventual) dentist asked how I could chew, and all things considered I'm really fucking glad I eventually went under the drill. The last time I had root canal work, I fell asleep and napped through the whole procedure -- this could be you! A little Valium also never hurt matters.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

My dentist is great, I don't know what all of you are on about. You either get regular dental maintenance now, or you have seriously messed up teeth later. Pick one, I guess. Some people are lucky and seem to have magical rot-proof teeth, but that's definitely not me.

Also, ignore half of what I said if you don't have any sort of insurance, I'm a privileged fucker that way.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

do you ahve dental insurance? (xpost) I would shoot myself with no dental insurance, seriously. $400 for two repaired fillings? what the hell? I still had to pay $70 which seem excessive

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

I have dental insurance.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

then you are just making excuses!

a good dentist should not allow you to feel any pain

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

I am frightened of being charged $70 out of the blue.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

i think i'm going to buy dental insurance and then schedule the surgery that i'm sure i need. is that cheating?

i like my dentist a lot, but since i'm moving i'll have to find a new one.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i took two flexeril and napped too.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

my dentist now has a massive computer monitor and a camera filming inside your mouth, plus a camera on one of his tools so he can go "look here, this is where you need to brush". so I guess he'd doing alright.

when I had braces, the orthodontist's breath stank every fucking time I went in, the day I got them off I said he should consider eating mints before seeing patients, he was like the worst matey Uncle on the planet, "OH YOU ARE A LIVE ONE" etc.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I hadn't been to the dentist in eight years, what with the lack of dental insurance and nothing causing me enough pain to warrant going. I cracked a tooth about three years ago that kept getting worse, so I finally had to suck it up and go.

I ended up needing one filling and a root canal on the broken tooth. The dentist was a little confused as to why I didn't come in to get it fixed sooner, he didn't seem to understand the "it didn't hurt so why fix it" or "I don't have any insurance" excuses. He kept telling me that it was close to cracking down to the pulp and causing me extreme amounts of pain.

The root canal was actually more interesting than painful. They novocaine the shit out of you, prop open your mouth, and then drill out the tooth before scraping the hollow roots out with tiny wire scrapers. He filled the holes with antiseptic, put a temporary filling in, and sent me home for a week. When I went back he filled the roots with rubber and put a more permanent filling over the whole deal. He wants me to get a gold cap but understands that I have to wait for until I get a job with insurance (which should happen for me or my wife in the next year). That's also when he says I must get my wisdom teeth removed, but they can wait a while.

All in all, my mouth feels a lot better, I no longer have a fucked up busted tooth, and it didn't hurt at all thanks to the drugs and whatnot. The downside is that this cost me like $1000 that I would have rather spent on other things.

joygoat (joygoat), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

I was so happy with my dentist in February, because I finally got my horrible back molar root-canaled and crowned, and she told me I had one cavity and to come back and have it filled later. Then I go in today and she says I have acquired SEVEN ADDITIONAL CAVITIES in the last five months. I've been trying to think back and remember if I spent large periods of time gargling with acid or something.

My insurance money ran out, too, so now I'm looking at some 200 bucks per cavity. Part of me wishes she were unscrupulous and lying, but she's this sweet mild-mannered lady and admittedly my teeth have a history of being shit.

carbon (carbon), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

six months pass...
Ok, so, I just went to a dentist yesterday after not having gone to one for SIX YEARS.

Guess how many cavities I have? No, guess. No, really. Guess.

I need to find a different one though. This lady:
a) used the word "poop" or some derivation of it at least 5 times in explaining cavities to me, even though I am basically an expert in having cavities (my whole mouth is basically silver at this point)
b) talked the ENTIRE time, a million words a minute, about all her relatives, occasionally asking me questions, while I had all this stuff in my mouth, including her fingers
c) explained my insurance will only cover less than half of my fillings, so I'll need to pay $1000 out of pocket plus the difference between the white and normal/insurance-covered fillings out of pocket
d) pressured me really hard to get INVISALIGN braces, to the point that I felt like I was being tortured AND getting a sales pitch at the same time

Quick question:
Have you heard that these fancy schmancy non-insurance-covered white fillings are not as good as the old dark kind?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

i guess 13.

what do i win?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

YOU BASTARD! YOU RUINED THE GAME FOR EVERYONE.

Just kidding.

Yeah, 13. Unlucky.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

I got the pitch on the white fillings too, and went for them.
1) They are mercury-free. Silver fillings are 50% mercury. I didn't like the idea of that in my system.
2) They structurally bond to your teeth. White filling + tooth is stronger than silver filling + tooth.
3) They don't react to metal/hot/cold so much, so the filled teeth won't be overly sensitive.

I think the early technology (1970's) of the composite fillings was not good, but the current ones are a better alternative to silver.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Here's some dental info: http://health.howstuffworks.com/cavity6.htm

I'm sure you can find lots of different opinions. One of my crazy old relatives waged a full-out public campaign against the amalgam (metal) fillings because she was convinced the mercury content was giving her all kinds of symptoms, even though I don't think anything has ever been proven...but I wouldn't bet any money on her being wrong, I mean, who WANTS mercury in her mouth?? Anyway, several of my old silver ones ended up breaking or coming loose in college, and I lost teeth because of it...but then I didn't have them fixed for ages and ages.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Or you could just listen to Jaq!

PS: I've never had my "white" fillings NOT be covered by insurance -- would your coverage be any different at another practice? Is yr current doc "in" your insurance plan?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

The plan I have said the white ones were "cosmetic", so they only paid the amount the silver ones would have cost.

I don't know about listening to me, honestly. I've spent the last 4 days trying to cook eggs, unsuccessfully. My confidence is low.

The one caveat the dentist gave on the white fillings - alcohol will degrade them, so if you drink spirits on a nightly basis they won't last as long as a silver one.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 17 February 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks.

The white fillings aren't covered by my insurance as they are considered cosmetic, as Jaq's, so I'd have to pay the difference if I got white fillings no matter where I went. However, this particular dentist ONLY does white fillings, so I wouldn't have a choice with her.

What I've heard is that since the fillings are white, it's harder for dentists to see whether or not they have completely sealed them, which can allow for air to get in. Also, I've heard they don't last as long as the old school fillings.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Friday, 17 February 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

i went to one dentist who said he only did composite fillings, that guy seemed shady to me, so i went somewhere else, and this new dentist says that that's a lot of garbage: composite and silver fillings are each better for different circumstances, and he would explain the benefits and drawbacks to me on this basis. i'm inclined to believe this, since that's generally how shit works in this world. so fuck that other dentist with his middle aged ponytail.

also, i recently got a root canal and it was the least painful procedure i've ever had, holy crap was i impressed...

AND, no sure if this is common knowledge, but everyone should check out

i think it's only US though... sorry other contries :(

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 17 February 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Some dentists apparently only do the composite fillings because the equipment is so expensive compared to what they need for the amalgam fillings. Also, there is special training involved for them to be able to do them, while any dentist can do an amalgam. So, they are justifiably trying to offset their investment. The dentist I go to (who I trust for some reason) gave me the option, but I did feel pitched on the white ones.

I don't like being pitched on tooth whitening every time I go in though. Now that I'm compliant with the flossing (got a water flosser, so much better than string), the hygienist doesn't have much else to harp on me about. I went once to a self-proclaimed "cosmetic" dentist in Phoenix who went on and on about how I needed my front teeth capped to get rid of "that gap". (There is no discernable gap.) Some scams are easy to intuit, but boy do they play on esteem.

I hadn't heard about gaps in the white fillings - the stuff is a two-part paste that they sort of overfill the space with after prepping it with the stuff that makes it bond. Then they ultraviolet it (or blue laser or something high tech like that) and then shape it to match your bite.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 17 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Good for you Gear! Go for the gas if they give you the option.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 17 February 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
i got three fillings today. this was a month or so after getting periodontic (a/k/a "deep gum cleaning") work done. and i have to get two more fillings 2 weeks from now. i got the white fillings -- i've heard too much about how silver fillings have mercury and will fuck up your health to risk it. since my insurance paid for most of the white fillings (i had a $28 copay/filling), i figured why the fuck not?!?

all told -- i felt less pain in my mouth than in my wallet (all this shit cost $300 in copays, thank GOD that i have dental insurance)!

eight years pass...

Bridge work: not as simple as advertised. I've been in the chair twice so far, 2-3 hours each time, with a third visit still to come. The temporary crown fell off after the first visit, which required a trip uptown while my regular guy was on vacation, then that fell out, which required another hour-long visit. And today, the recommendation for a preemptive root canal, before the permanent bridge goes in, on a tooth that is very sensitive. Which I'll reluctantly go ahead with.

It's ruining my whole summer.

Appreciate that. I don't want to overdramatize--it's not wisdom teeth or anything, and I get good coverage. It's just the timing that's a drag, and that it's stretching out.
