i just realised that several of my friends have plane tickets and/or firm plans already for new year's eve. i haven't gotten around to it, since i try to not think about xmas/ny until after thanksgiving.

when do you make the plans? do you wait till the last minute? do you already have plans made?

side question: is there anything fantastic in london on new year's eve that i shouldn't miss?

On New Year's Eve

Jonathan Z., Friday, 28 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ten minutes to midnight...

i HATE new year's! sorry to be a sourpuss, it's such a non-event for me though usually I find. i would certainly like to do something sociable and hedonistic on the night tho so that I don't feel miserable and an official sad case. a house party/piss-up with lots of good friends would be the best thing (restaurants, pubs and clubs just rip you off otherwise)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate fun.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem seconded. A party has already been mentioned for NYE's but the thought of it is still giving me the howling fantods. I might start buying Dr Who videos NOW and start the year off with a... er... you know, the sound of the TARDIS... er...

And A BOTTLE OF WHISKY.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

a bottle of whisky with TARDIS-like interior would be bestest

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, now. Thanks for reminding me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

somehow i always end up travelling long distances and doing over-elaborate stuff and being broke for january. but 2 years ago i stayed in with two friends and watched 'spinal tap'. sad, but ultimately so much better than the others.

enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when the howling fantods put in an appearance.

I've not spent a New Year in London for the past two years and do not want to return to such nonsense now.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

We were thinking of hosting something this year but I've realised that if you want to do that then you basically have to get working on it in mid-October to be first in with the invites.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem THIRDED! As a youth I used to weep in Talisker shops.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a really good track record with NYE, and usually start at least thinking about it three or so weeks in advance, often before. Last year I was in Paris, so even further beforehand in that case.

This year a friend of mine is throwing one of his (usually absolutely huge) house parties, so I reckon I'll be going to that. It'll be my first new year in London since 1997.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this year we hole up in a barn somewhere, somewhere in a field in wiltshire, alright. i think it'll turn 'inspector hound' but what can you do?

enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

death to Matt DC

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom that is not true! When I had you lot round last year it was basically a case of 'oh bugger it no one else has bothered to arrange anything I will seize the initiative in an uncharacteristic way'. As far as I know we have no plans ahem hint hint.

Emma, Friday, 28 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am tempted to have a house do this NYE.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only had about two event NYEs, planned several weeks in advance - one a friend's do, the other Primal Scream at Ally Pally. Most of the time I don't plan at all and end up just popping down to the pub and then going home to sleep: NYE doesn't really mean all that much to me, and I'd rather sleep and feel a bit the sad loser than go out for a night of enforced cheeriness. I celebrated the Euro coming in a few years ago by going to Belgium on New Years' Day, though.

cis (cis), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not vehemently anti-euro but -- erm, why?????

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

would def be up for a FAP somewhere they're not charging or issuing tickets for entry (a proper pub then) and is not likely to be TOO busy

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

24 hour tube this year at least - apparently

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh a NYE FAP, that would sort out the socialites from the sadcases alright (I know which side I'd be on.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - because shiny new money! And confused shopkeepers! And also huge plastic cows in church squares with fairy lights hanging off them.

cis (cis), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair dos

Nu-Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

my new year's will consist of pausing my record player, getting out of my room, wishing my parents and brother a happy new year and then getting back inside my room and putting the record back on.

'';-)''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate NYE. Maybe it dates from planning (and failing) to lose my virginity on NYE. Every one since has been a vortex of crap.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really looking forward to this New Year's Eve. I don't usually Make Plans (last year's plans were so last-minute I literally left the house as the fireworks were starting) but this year the man I lurve is gonna be in town and it would just be WRONG not to do something splurgy and special.

In answer to the original qn: I made my reservation in early November.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I was wondering how long it would take for someone to suggest and NYE FAP.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well i have accepted i am a sadcase with no proper friends so look to you guys as a last resort, OKAY?!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

vortex of crap

like 'shitstorm' but so much better

I'll be staying in, as usual, but that's what I like to do, so it's okay. Hoping for a clear night to watch the stars disappear in a fog of firework smoke. Kicking out the old year, letting the new year in. I like to wake up at a normal time on New Year's Day, coz it's nice when the park is empty and you have a whole lot of space to yourself.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
so what are people planning this year? I hate New Year's Eve!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping to do the same thing as I did last year. Bloke bought an outrageously expensive half-bottle of dessert wine and I cooked a really nice dinner and we were in bed by 1am. Ideal.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds great!

why is it that to do anything social our out-of-doors, you're expected to pay $100 a head to be around a bunch of drunk strangers?

I should stay home and do cheap drugs alone
