One Of The Things I Really Like About ILX...

...is that it doesnt have sigfiles.

So, sigfiles - classic or dud? Any you particularly recall?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, they're so bad. It's like being told a joke by someone you don't know which may or may not have been funny the first time but is guaranteed not to be funny the 1,684th time.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Nee nee mun pish is still funny.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking sides: sigfiles vs avatars vs custom titles.

Goth.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone was a goth in 1992.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No they weren't

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a goth in 1989.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

you were never a Goth!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was. A wannabe goth, at any rate.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The people who weren't goths were shoegazers, and even then there was overlap. (For my argument to work you have to realize that ravers were happy goths.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

when I used to receive regular e-mails from academic authors (most were materials scientists or physicists) they would quite regularly put sig. files on their emails with ASCII Drawings in them. One Australian author had a map of Oz on his, and a Japanese author had a caricature of himself.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

IIRC more than 3 lines is rudeness. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=emily+postnews+netiquette&spell=1

Alan (Alan), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That's perfectly accurate, Tamagothi demonstrated that a long time ago (as did the original MARS-FM in LA).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I could never get the Daniel Ash Tamgothi.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was younger i actually wrote a program to randomise my sigfiles to try and combat the fact that it gets boring after a while. And true enough with 10 different taglines it wasn't until the 11th time before it got boring.

Yeah I was sad.

ken c, Friday, 28 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

any of you guys had a GEEKCODE? (is that what it's called? Some code that's supposed to describe you like a barcode, but geex0rier)

ken c, Friday, 28 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I had completely blocked Geek Code from my memory.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

On the subject of board features such as sig files...

Sometimes I think it'd actually be a cool idea, you know, a chance to show how creative we could be. Then I realize how completely bloated and hard to load ILX would be if all of those snazzy customization features and how great this simpler board format has been and I think, "Nah, those things would completely ruin this forum."

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah, I used to have a couple of different sig lines for my usenet posts, but I generally spent more time on my aliases: "Winnigan's Fake", "98% Water, 2% Cheap Suit", "Very ugly indeed", a few more. I have an email sig at work.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If no-one posts soon I'm going to have to visit ILM. And no-one wants that.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I once got stuck moderating a UBB board full of happy goths (ie ravers), and I began to want to kill people with sig files. There's be a post to the effect of "Have a gr8 nite TranceBabe/ Sounds Of Eden/ Pill Monster/ other crap handle!" followed by most of the scipt of Human Traffic as a sig.

It put me right off sig files, emoticons and handles, hence why ILx is a palace of wonder.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 28 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Miggie (Miggie), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Suddenly I understand why people like PLUR. I am entranced.

I am looking at that GIF while playing _Remedy_ and it's the best thing ever.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They look like they're all fucking their own doppelgangers.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, everyone needs to put on "Bingo Bango" and WATCH THE BOUNCY FUN. (For a change I am not talking about breasts.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

See Dan, see the Dan bounce.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I found another one of my old .sigs!

"Hate is a fuzzy puppy."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The trouble with these emoticon-enabled boards is that, 99 times out of a 100, the graphic size isn't in sync with the font size, so every time someone uses one of the things mid-sentence, the line-spacing gets totally fucked up. (Almost always the case with smiley-enabled blogs too.)

I know, slightly OT. I have no strong feelings about sigs, although they're usually a load of superfluous junk... if you don't have useful info to convey, why bother?

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it also looks good with "getting away with it" by electronic
