Waitaminute.....yor e-mail reads "ghetto nana", yet you've not kissed a boy as yet? Isn't that sort've a bit of false advertising?

C J (C J), Saturday, 29 November 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nana means grandmother, doesn't it? That'd make it more ageism than racism, no?

And I think that you should make sure to keep your eyes open so that if the other person does the same you can laugh at their technique.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nana" is French for "chick".

Wintermuté (Wintermute), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

How on god's green earth am I being "quasi-racist"? And let me express a truly emphatic fuck you for implying as much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Waitaminute.....yor e-mail reads "ghetto nana", yet you've not kissed a boy as yet? Isn't that sort've a bit of false advertising?

i'm not trying to instigate here, but to explain how i saw it:

to say that "ghetto nana" is false advertising because she hasn't kiss a boy is to, even jokingly, give weight to the notions that women in the 'ghetto' are sexually lascivious, or at the very least, to make fun of the notion that 'ghetto' could imply virtuous or innocent or clean or however you want to put it.....

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

why are people in the ghetto necessarily black?

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

jody we deal in racism not classism in america. (where have you been?)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

but if it would make alex more comfortable for me to label him quasi-classist, then anything for him.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

just to clarify, what i said is equally applicable to men as to women:)

possible m (mandinina), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

why are people in the ghetto necessarily black?

"ghetto" according to dictionary.com:

"A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure."

So "ghetto" must be a reference to SOME minority group, not necessarily black people, but still a race that is vulnerable to racism.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(as opposed to a race that is not vulnerable to racism, you see)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You're thinking of Kryptonians.

I do!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

in the movement away from those considerations of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, don't we move into a better understanding of class and economic power? isn't that implying that it not only doesn't come out of nowhere, but that there's some disturbing similarity to it all...

possible m (mandinina), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was joking.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Citing the so-called "urban dictionary"....

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ill+na+na

....."na na" does NOT mean chick or grandmother (yes, that's right, the working title to Foxy Brown's debut album was not Ill Grandmother)...but rather it is slang for...wait for it...VAGINA!

Now that the slang in question happens to be rooted in hip-hop is beside the point. I don't care if the slang in question is part of the lexicon of Asian Street Gangs, Bleach Blonde Surfer Dude lingo or Cockney Rhyming Slang, the point remains....if you're not sure what the term means or implies, you probably shouldn't use it.

Nana (p. 287) (nt.) [from janati. See also janana. *gene, as in Gr. gnw_--sis (cp. gnostic), gnw/mh; Lat. (co)gnitio; Goth. kunpi; Ogh. kunst; E. knowledge] knowledge, intelligence, insight, conviction, recognition, opp. anana & avijja, lack of k. or ignorance. -- 1. Ñana in the theory of cognition: it occurs in intensive couple--compounds with terms of sight as cakkhu (eye) & dassana (sight, view), e. g. in cakkhu--karana nana--karana "opening our eyes & thus producing knowledge" i. e. giving us the eye of knowledge (a mental eye) (see cakkhu, janati passati, & cpd. °karana): Bhagava janan janati passan passati cakkhu--bhuto nana--bhuto (=he is one perfected in knowledge) M I.111=Nd2 2353h; natthi hetu natthi paccayo nanaya dassanaya ahetu apaccayo nanan dassanan hoti "through seeing & knowing," i. e. on grounds of definite knowledge arises the sure conviction that where there is no cause there is no consequence S V.126. Cp. also the relation of ditthi to nana. This implies that all things visible are knowable as well as that all our knowledge is based on empirical grounds; yavatakan neyyan tavatakan nanan Nd2 2353m; yan nanan tan dassanan, yan dassanan tan nanan Vin III.91; nana+dassana (i. e. full vision) as one of the characteristics of Arahantship: see arahant II.D. Cp. BSk. jnanadarsana, e. g. AvŚ I.210. -- 2. Scope and character of nana: n. as faculty of understanding is included in panna (cp. wisdom=perfected knowledge). The latter signifies the spiritual wisdom which embraces the fundamental truths of morality & conviction (such as aniccan anatta dukkhan: Miln 42); whereas n. is relative to common experience (see Nd2 2353 under cakkhuma, & on rel. of p. & n. Ps I.59 sq.; 118 sq.; II.189 sq.). -- Perception (sanna) is necessary to the forming of nana, it precedes it (D I.185); as sure knowledge n. is preferable to saddha (S IV.298); at Vin III.91 the definition of n. is given with tisso vijja (3 kinds of knowledge); they are specified at Nd2 266 as atthasamapatti--nana (consisting in the 8 attainments, viz. jhana & its 4 succeeding developments), panc' abhinna° (the 5 higher knowledges, see panna & abhi°), miccha° (false k. or heresy). Three degrees of k. are distinguished at DA I.100, viz. savaka--parami--nana, paccekabuddha°, sabbannuta° (highest k. of a relig. student, k. of a wise man, & omniscience). Four objects of k. (as objects of truth or sammaditthi) are enumd as dhamme nanan, anvaye n., paricchede n., sammuti n. at D III.226, 277; other four as dukkhe n. (dukkha--) samudaye n., nirodhe n., magge n. (i. e. the knowledge of the paticca--samuppada) at D III.227; Ps I.118; Vbh 235 (=sammaditthi). Right knowledge (or truth) is contrasted with false k. Mandorla

Mandorla Vescia Piscis "Almond" used in Oriental Art to signify the Feminine also associated with the Myth of Nana who conceived the God Attis. The candlestick of the Jews tabernacle of the Ark was decorated with almonds for their fertility magic.

My usage of Urban Dictionary was only to support my argument that "na na" is slang for female sexual organs. I assure you there was no race-baiting going on in my post. I'd have made a simillar comment to a eunuch if he'd been walking around calling himself "stud".
