Mysterious Symptoms...

For the past several days, I've had the chills (hot one minute, cold the next) and my neck, shoulders and back have been very achey and stiff. Also headachey. No coughing or sore throat or sneezing, though. Any ideas? All this talk of the new Flu Pandemic Inevitability (don't watch CNN if you don't wanna hear about it) has me worried. And with a pregnant wife in the house, my concerns are doubled.

Any pre-meds or doctor folk out there?

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, i once had a flu variant which was basically i couldn't move my neck AT ALL w/o extreme tenderness and pain, and i had to lie in bed and look upwards for three days - but no other symptoms that i recall

(it was rubbish on a stick for three days, then i wz better)

I'm not quite that bad, but it's just a general ache and an overall malaise. I do have a hecka-bad headache, tho'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 November 2003 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to scare you, but if your neck is stiff and you have a really bad head ache plus Fever. It sounds like it could be menigitis, which is pretty serious. If your sympotoms have lasted more than 12hrs, It would be wise to see a doctor A.S.A.P.

How does one contract meningitis?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 November 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's bacterial or viral, there are difft kinds?

(there's lots of stuff abt it on the web)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 29 November 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't Panic Alex! I am usally wrong. Were I am from menegitis turns up around this time of year. The symptoms are close to influeza. But stiff neck and headache cause for concern. I am not to sure how it is contracted. Sorry to alarm you.

danielle g. (danielle g.), Saturday, 29 November 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

here's some stuff

flu is way more likely though

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 29 November 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, you need to go see a doctor about this today if possible. the stiff neck you're experiencing may be a sign of meningeal irritation. fever and headache fit the picture of meningitis, but they're pretty non-specific. this could still be the flu.

if you do have meningitis, it's much more likely viral (or aseptic) than bacterial. viral meningitis is a much less severe disease than bacterial meningitis (which is the one which ends up on the news whenever there's an outbreak). if you do have viral meningitis, you'll likely recover completely in a week or so without any specific treatment. but you need to see a doctor to make sure that is indeed what you've got.

i'm NOT a doctor (ignore the username, a tribute to a particularly good disco song), but i am a third year med student and i'm looking through my "principles of neurology" text as i type.

one more thing: your wife being pregnant is certainly a concern here, but as far as i know, the bugs that cause meningitis are not especially dangerous in pregnancy (unlike rubella, say). but again, i'm not a doctor, and you need to see a doctor as soon as you can.

all the best.

Alex, from what I see, it sounds like you could have the flu (or at least a strain of it). The aches you're having sound mighty familiar, though I wonder if you had any vaccinations. Off to the doc for him to answer any of your worries....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Meningitis (or that possibility) was the first thing that sprung to my mind too. See a doc.

Got to be piles.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Took my temperature when I got home (this thread was composed during overnight shift at the office....also a factor in making one feel unwell). Mercifully no temperature. The other symptoms remain.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 29 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Better odds, since you've no temp, but still....make an appointment. Tis better to waste an hour at the doc's office, than not go and discover it was truly serious.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 November 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

go to the doctor!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 29 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Difficult to make doctor appointments on weekend. Next day, feeling a bit better. Still a bit wonky, but much better than before. No nauseau, no noticeable temperature.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A sudden rise in temperature is one of the symptoms of meningitis, and another is discovering you suddenly have red blotches on your skin, a bit like a rash. If you press a glass tumbler onto a normal skin rash, you will see that it disappears. If you press a glass tumbler against your skin on meningitis blotches, they still look red.

At this point you should run - not walk - quickly to your nearest hospital outpatients department because they have a very limited time to pump you full of the necessary antibiotics to combat this septicaemia.

If you are feeling 'wonky' but a little better, then it's probably a flu-type virus. Drink plenty of water, and get lots of rest.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

C J (C J), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks all. Feeling much better for the most part (though I'm not going to lie -- the suggestion of meningitis truly put the fear in me). Today, as mentioned before, I'm feeling only slightly out of it. Stay tuned, anyway.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Got to be piles.

Pain in your elbow, Ed?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

As mysteriously as they arrived, the symptoms have vanished. Odd.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you have mono!!! it can come and go unless you really get run down. you should get a blood test. it is really hard on your liver and not caring for yourself properly can while being sick with mono can really cause damage.

fifteen years pass...

ok i'm reasonably sure this is a food allergy (and not eg CV-19) but i'm not sure what to = strange taste in mouth (slight but def there) and mildly sensitive very slightly swollen lips

yesterday i assumed it was LENTILS (which i bought lots of and have been converting into daal) or possibly POWDERED FENUGREEK (as the daal requires it but i hadn't used it for a while otherwise). symptoms went away overnight, then returned after breakfast = not lentils but scrambled eggs and spring onions (v unlikely, i eat a fvckton of both) or the ground coffee (from papua new guinea bcz cheap in the corner shop). i never had this type before and first drank some yesterday -- on the whole coffee is no problem except normal caffeine issues BUT i can't drink m&s french ground coffee bcz it always gives me a bad sore throat so)

so anyway i am otherwise fine and at the moment this is merely mildly annoying

two years pass...

The ring finger on my right hand felt tingly and numb. I could move it fine but when I looked at it the skin was yellowish and the nail blueish. On a hunch I straightened my arm and my elbow clicked, as it often does, and I immediately felt a difference in my finger. Took a little while and a few more clicks but now it's back to normal.
