It can't be tricky, its just knowing whats what. Like CM4.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop playing CM4.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, fuck that shit, I'd rather take Aberdeen to a league title than have friends)

Get a cat.

That picture scares me.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No one, surefire way to get popular, but being well read, curious, witty and a good listener worked a storm for me.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking you're great and that so is everyone else helps.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does it scare you Johnney?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

platitudes: don't worry about being popular; find happiness in yourself; shake and enjoy.

possible m (mandinina), Saturday, 29 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Its like the cat is giving me the evils, and I can't say anything to it otherwise the old lady will get up from her seat and send bolts of lightning through her fingertips at me. Or something.

The cat just ripped off three of that granny's fingers, for fuck's sake!

Granny's evil.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

act like ultra-popular people who have loads of friends.

what is it about those people? what is it that they do that you dont? could you do those things? what do you like about your friends?

i think a lot of this is people-specific, and thats where it can become harder for people sometimes. like you have a great rapport with person a, how come its so much harder with person b, even though you act the same? i guess thats something to do with feeling comfortable and confident.

popularity is like money, the more you have, the easier it is to get more

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yo, dudes, where the bars at?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnney, suggest something else i could get a pic for.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

charltonlido, I know you meant that advice for the person who originally posted the query, but that sounds like such good advice for anyone in general and it's definitely worth pondering over.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay then aja . . . um . . .

If you want to be really popular and have lots of friends, you should start a band or become a DJ. Really, there's no quicker route to meeting people available in the western world.

Evil cats rock the ashram.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just going to suggest you learn to play an instrument. We have a bass that no one plays, maybe you cuold have that.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.studiomark.com/sept2002-images/kitty-has-bad-day.jpg

Save the Hello Kitty and you'll be popular.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's high time Hello Kitty got chopped up and eated by robo-alien leaf cutter ants. Never liked her. I had to read a Hello Kitty book to my daughter when she was two. That cat does not have anything resembling an interesting life. She gets up, has breakfast, plays with the ducks, goes home and goes to sleep.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

eated

What kind of word is that? I'm not going to respect your opinion based on the fact you used the word "eated" instead of "eaten."

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I already play a guitar and sing a bit. Doesn't seem to be doing me much good on the meeting new friends front though. I generally get half-way through a choice classic and people turn their heads and quickly look away with disgusted looks on their faces and mouths burrowing into their pint glasses.

And I'm with you on "eated" being an iffy word 'n' all, although I'm usually all for newly-invented words. If its good enough for Shakespeare, its good enough for me. The line must be drawn at "I learned him to speak after he eated his dinner."

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If Dave Grohl made it up it's fine, like the word "paramania." If it just using the wrong tense or form of a word, it's not fine.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What kind of guitar do you play?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Show me a picture of the kind of guitar.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A cat that belongs to one of my neighbors was temporarily locked out of the apartment. The cat was scratching at the door, spinning around in circles, and then hissing and looking angrily at me when I walked by, like I was supposed to do something about it.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

of course, a good way to be more popular is to look people in the eye, listen noticeably, relaxed body movement, when they finish, laugh along a little, say "well...", leave a little pause for dramatic effect and to get their attention, and say "Untersuchungen Zur Biologie Der Erdkrote "Bufo Bufo L": Unter Besonderer Berucksichtigung Des Einflusses Von Migrationshindernissen Auf Das Wanderverhalten Und Die Entwicklung Von Vier Erdkroenpopulationen Im Stadtgebiet Von Osnabruck, what do you think?"

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

And then eat it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth's advice is urgent and key. Allow me to share this little conversation I had a week ago on the way to the library...

very pretty Asian girl : "Excuse me. Are you a student?"
me : "Yes."
girl : "A BIOLOGY student??"
me : "No."
girl : "Oh." (walks away)

See? Pretend you're a German biology student and you'll be popular.

Wintermuté (Wintermute), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but I know that girl. She hates Germans. She was hoping you were Austrian.

Thank God I've got DSL, otherwise I'd have had to wait for ages for that picture to load. And I really think it's changed my life in a positive way, I'll be a better person for having seen it. No, I'm not doing it justice. Its the greatest thing I've ever seen. No, really. Thanks.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 30 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think maybe some of us aren't MEANT to be ultra-popular and have loads of friends. Think about the time and effort it takes to keep up with loads of friends...mightn't it just be more satisfying to keep up with loads of acquaintances, a few good friends, and have time alone as well?

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 30 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Being popular and having loads of friends is arse. It means people always want you to do shit with them and always email you and call you and you have to buy tons of xmas presents and its all just like, so much effort.

I'd rather stay home and talk to the cat.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 November 2003 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Have big tits.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 30 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce, as always, your outpourings actually make a vast amount of sense. Hmm . . . maybe all I need is a cave in the middle of Siberia with a T2 connection and an unlimited supply of Marmite?

Oh, and Aja . . .

Johnney, is that a Gibson SG?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

only shit on julio.

raphael diligent (Cozen), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not yr friend!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll only keep like 4 or 5 friends anyway, so don't worry about it.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't bogart that joint

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a picture of a gibson SG - my guitar is not, unfortunatly, a gibson SG, but it plays pretty well, and looks near enough from a distance. I fuck the sound up so much when I put it through all my FX pedals that an expensive guitar would really hardly be worth the effort. I'm spending all my cash on phase distorters and the such.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What kind do you have?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Its a cheap copy. I'm sure the sound is appalling, but as I say, it plays well, and by the time I've put it through my rig, it sounds ace!

DO you play? What sort do you play? Ask permission before you post - you'll got told off otherwise, and we'll all have to point and laugh.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't play, but I might soon. ;)

My favorite kind of guitars are Fender Mustang.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mustang is cool. I keep meaning to invest in a proper Telecaster though, since they rule.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't matter, Mustang or Telecaster, Fender is my favorite.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Learn to play the guitar, aja. Its really, really easy. Buy a cheap acoustic for £50 and a book for a tenner. We'll have you playing Catch The Wind in no time!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in America and even though I'm not exactly sure of how much 50 pounds would be here, I'm sure acoustic guitars are more than that.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

How long have you been playing guitar?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Only three or four years, but its cool. I worked on my acoustic ginger-picking stuff for ages (Nick Drake etc) but then got bored and bought an electric+BIG amp+FX pedal. I do more songwriting than actual playing mind - I TRY to write a sogn a day, although it never actually works out like that!

£50 is about $90 dollars - you can probably pick up a cheaper one second hand, though I've NO idea how much guitars are in the US. They can't be any more expensive than over here though!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 1 December 2003 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a Gibson SG but I am friendless.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 1 December 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja will be your friend.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 December 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnney, guitars are expensive! The cheapest acoustic guitar I've ever seen was a little over $200, and it was on sale!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja will be your friend.

Why should I?
