i have a lot of friends who live on canal boats on the grand union canal.
sailing along the river soar is so beautiful.

(oh and dont call the boats 'barges', they get very annoyed!)

I grew up near various stretches of the Erie Canal, which is now a scenic and not-very-commercial waterway that runs through a number of quaint upstate New York towns. (It was also originally derided as "Clinton's Big Ditch," after Gov. Dewitt Clinton. [Optional Monica Lewinsky joke goes here.])

out west we call them arroyos, I think they can be man-made or not.

usually they are dry:

they are quite pretty when they fill up:

but you don't want to get caught in an arroyo during monsoon season:

We cruised From Long Eaton to Fradley Junction on the Trent and Mersey last year. It was definitely one of the most relaxing vacations ever, but I pitied the poor people who decided to do this with their in-laws.

There are actually canals here in Long Beach, CA but it seems only the locals know about them. The particular area of Long Beach is called Naples. Here's a photo from the web. I'll try to get down there next weekend and take some real photos. In the meantime:

The "All-American Canal" in Imperial County, CA. Built in 1940, it diverts water from the Colorado River to Calexico.

six months pass...
Is there anywhere in London where you can actually go on canal barge trips, like Little Venice to Camden Lock or something?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly that Matt.

chris (chris), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone done it? Is it worth doing? Is there decent scenery and so forth? How long does it take?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Holyoke, MA. has six canals, all now defunct. it is the most beautiful dead milltown in the state, which is saying something. The canals are now filled with garbage, and the occasional dead body. The defunct factories are burned out shells.

How is this not my thread? Jeez!

Oh. Yeah. Cause the height of my CanalMania period coincided with the period when I didn't have internet access.

The summer I was 6, we lived on a Canal Boat for a summer. I blame that experience for my obsession.

I've been to the canal museum in Kings Cross. It wasn't great, but necessary if you're a canal freak. I have always wanted to take the Camden Canal Tours, but you know, ugh, Camden, etc. Maybe we should have a Canal FAP! One of my fave pubs is right on the Canal, but it's in Islington and nowhere near any of the tour getting on and off points.

The CanalWay Ohio Scenic Byway, an America's Scenic Byway, traces the development of canals, and the Cuyahoga Scenic Valley Railroad travels some of the same route.
