I think I just accepted the fact that winter is here yesterday, and I felt that it may have lead to a spiral of despair, but this bracing article has bucked me up.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

so what is winter like where you are at?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

we just experienced our first dusting of snow this winter! luckily, the ground was much too warm for it to stick at all.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish Harper's still read like that.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 1 December 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the truth is as much as I've been bitching and moaning about the weather getting so cold lately it hit me the other day that this is one of my favourite times of year. the sun goes down really really early but it's beautiful when it does, the blueish-orange light reflecting off the windows and the blueish-grey of the mountain and all that shit, it's really nice.

also "the bracing air lends a zest to all enjoyments," this is true!

Buxom young men?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"One expects to meet Kubla Khan at every turn"!

I was just up in Montreal last weekend, and got my first bit of snow for the year. It was lovely, though it didn't last long.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There's blizzard conditions here in Cleveland. With snow on the ground the early sunset is much easier to take.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's snowing in New York now. It will make the views out the window lovely and the crossing of the streets tedious.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It just started snowing, it's making me feel sad.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

cold windy dark

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, that's my favourite line in the article! they're "delusively lightsome and fluffy!"

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Buxom once meant "healthily plump," but at some point came to refer to that quality only as expressed in a particular area of the female anatomy (perhaps because of the word's resemblance to "bosom"?).

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

but really the best part is (if you're a montrealer or have spent any time here) the "à louer" sign!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it hasn't been too bad in mpls yet. i always think this around december thought, "hey it's already december, this isn't too bad, hah winter you ain't shit! bring it!" and then it does. and hangs around until mid april.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Winter is weird here, it was a bit cold, and the clouds were more broken than they have been lately. I was sitting in the park watching parakeets in the trees, there was about 8 or 9 of them, lime green birds! PARAKEETS in London, wtf?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was out running this evening the sunset was beautiful enough for me to ignore how cold my ears were. Sadly, no parakeets.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

thought = though, but it does sound poetic kinda.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Oratory for rent?

Nemo (JND), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kinda worried about the parakeets actually, they might freeze to death if we get a really cold snap. Shouldn't they be flying south? Maybe they escaped from a pet shop and had a load of kids when it was hot in the summer, and know nothing about flying to warmer parts of the world?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Your mission is clear: you must let the parakeets make nests on your mantlepiece so that they can survive the winter.

Then you must knit sweaters and hats for them.

Oh, a great flock of parakeets just flew by!

God, I miss midwinter. Sorry, summer folks. But August is the worst month of the year.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to see montreal in midwinter.
