The picture makes it look like it's about the Lord of the Rings!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

i better not move there. too much competition

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was about to make a cruder version of Spencer's joke and I'm glad I didn't.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Heavens, looks like Ned would find most love in Denver. ;)

And if guys who are a little on the short side feel they are being short-changed, they might want to consider relocating to Texas, where women have responded in disproportionate numbers that they are willing to date men 5-feet-6-inches or shorter.

Notice that the article says nowt about the possibilities for short women.

So, further proof that there few places where I fit in. Hooray!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, that's like saying the same thing about tall guys.. I know it's a double standard but tall guys and shorter women tend to, uh, fare better than their respective opposites from my observations...(don't they?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

We do? Evidently, I ain't been paying attention. In my experience, I get frequently looked at---but rarely approached. Must be too self-assured for the male of the species.

Makes me feel like a model.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ooh, and Texas has Sam in it too! I shall move.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

And for what it is worth, the composite of the ideal woman, is a flirtatious, thrill-seeker with an average build, long, light brown hair and a college degree, who doesn't smoke, does drink socially and enjoys public displays of affection.

Women seem to want pretty much the same: a bold, assertive, flirtatious non-smoking social drinker who has dark brown hair, an average body and a college degree -- who likes to dance.

Fitter, Happier, etc.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks for telling me what you think I want, you unknown journo. Generalisations, ahoy.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Damn. That's all I have to say. Damn.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

when are they gonna come out with the stats about short, pear-shaped girls with bad attitudes and really short hair? (oh yeah, Minneapolis. pffft. I'm from there)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

well if it makes you feel any better, your posts on the topic of relationships usually sound like an ex or two of *mine!* ;-)

( *really* want to know....)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

no. 5'3" is short.

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

short = shorter than me, preferably by a head or so. I'm five-foot-nine and a half.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

(which doesn't stop me from liking tall women either, I've just come to realize that the aforementioned description tends to be what I'm most instantaneously attracted to)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

preferably by a head or so.

how big is a head?
*sniggers*

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

[[resisting . . . obvous . . . insult . . .]]

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

M Matos I understand. For me, it's 6ft - 6'4 for dating as far as "immediate attraction" usually goes....

re: obv. insult, c'mon let's hear it, genuis! ;-)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I didn't actually have one, I'm afraid. I'm just bluffing.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

no rules!!! yeah!

sorry, i'm deleriously trying to determine if I have a type. um, no.

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't really have a "type" either, but I know what I'm weakest for.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mandy, you are short, M Matos is tall, you both begin with "M" , therefore it is *destined*.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

(not that either of you were remotely serious, though I'm flattered that you're pretending!)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

*tweeeeeeeeee*

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's very nice of you but unfortunately reality is . . . oh, fuck it, you're right, I'm awesome. [[falls over edge into pure unadulterated tweedom]]

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

what fucking playground?!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

the one where the kids meet to settle their differences before running home for cookies and Gilligan's Island reruns.

cupidity (jackcole), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dunno, but i don't think a paper on how twee levi-strauss is will work...

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

did such a place ever exist?

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

the popular imagination to thread

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

i was resisting...

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, maybe then we can only use that in our imaginations

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

like playing tetherball on the internet w/a bunch of people you've never met?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

:) imaginary locations have uses too.

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually i know donut bitch. but we've never played tetherball. life is like that.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know you do, and so do I, but he wasn't playing, and . . . oh forget it.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

aw, don't be sad.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

not sad at all.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

*sigh*

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Knocking down that longstanding saying that gentlemen prefer blonds, for example, Match.com surveys have consistently shown that gentlemen actually prefer women with light brown hair.

key distinction here, we can all rest easier now.

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Heavens, looks like Ned would find most love in Denver. ;)

Hmm...

As for women's thoughts on men with long hair, it is considered hot in Denver, not in Chicago, Illinois.

No wonder Billy Corgan shaved his head.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

But it doesn't say anything about bald men!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Billy circa 1991:

Ned, I think it was Billy's original look that made long hair unpopular in Chicago.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey, you're mean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

let's not get all twee again...:)

possible m (mandinina), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

one year passes...
So, what is there to do in Portland? I'll be for the better part of the first week of October. I'll be working 12 hour shifts so I won't have a whole lot of time, but how about any really good eats/record stores/jazz clubs etc.?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Gah! So close, Jordan.

But yet so far.

As for Portland, I've still not made it up there.

Lion-O (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago) link

but how about any really good eats/record stores/jazz clubs etc.?

come get drunk with me at Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive, play games at Ground Kontrol, check out like all the Ozone Records, or Powells/Reading Frenzy etc

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:18 (nineteen years ago) link

What a weird Portland thread to revive.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe jordan is looking for a portly date?

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, I would love a portly date. Unless my fiancee is reading this, in which case I'm kidding.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Ground Kontrol looks pretty sweet.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

what part of the city are you goign to be in? NE? SE?

also, you missed out; the HP Lovecraft Film Festival was last weekend, and a damned hoot. I got to do sound for Patti Smith!

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Uh, I'm not sure. SE, I think. Although the hospital might be NW?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

which hospital? OHSU? the big one in the hills?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Ka1s3r

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh wait, their big HQ bldg? that's like 2 miles south of my house. that'd be in NE portland, then. you're right smack in the middle of the gentrified corridor that is the Irvington neighborhood.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

i went to a doctor in that hospital!

glasgow coma score (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:05 (nineteen years ago) link

not so sure about jazz bars, but you're in a town chock full of great divey bars.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm, I'm not sure. I also suspect my hotel (Courtyard on Sunnybrook) is SE? Is that pretty far away?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

anyway, i just emailed you about that

what's the nearest numbered street? SE 82nd?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

If you're going to be at the Courtyard on Sunnybrook, that's Clackamas. You'll likely be at the Sunnyside facilities. That's waaay out there.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

SE 93rd, looks like.

xpost, yep, that's it. Fantastic. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

yup. you're in the shitty SE side of town, full of meth houses. There's a cool pawn/secondhand shop on SE 82nd called "Stuff," tho, that's worth checking out.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Sorry. It's not totally impossible to do things in the outskirts of Portland, but the things that kingfish is talking about doing will be almost impossible with 12-hour shifts...unless you want to spring for a cab.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

not necessarily. there's always the tri-met buses & the max train...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I like stuff.

(I'll have a rental car.)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

If you can get up northways on 82nd there are some good Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants you can try.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost -- well if you have a rental car, that should be much easier. Remember I-205 northbound and I-84 will be your conduits to reaching anything cool in town. Use them. Stay off the outer surface streets like 82nd and Powell Blvd.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 21:37 (nineteen years ago) link
