Xmas light extravagance- C or D

We moved to our current home in August. There are many many youngish families and kids. So I wheel in here from school tonight and WHOA, Xmas lights EVERYWHERE. They run the gamut, stylewise.

Here's the home facing mine, not a particularly inspired effort. It's late, most of displays have been shut down and I am not going outside, but if I see any good ones tomorrow, I'll post them.

So, classic or dud. I find them dud, but conversely believe the worse taste, the less restraint, the better.

Our limit: a wreath. Maybe.

Xmas lights are fucking excellent. the more of the the better. I wish my eyes were shiny baubles and my hair was made of tube lighting and my hands were giant sugar cookies. That would make me smile.

Santa torched my house for Xmas!

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Baby Jesus will have no problem finding that house when he's riding around on his sleigh looking for the pastel-colored eggs hidden within.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

most of displays have been shut down

were they considered a hazard to low-flying aircraft?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I loooooooveee xmas lights, they're the only redeeming feature of the holiday. I don't like the time/effort/money required to put them up, so I don't.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had rooms in previous homes that were lit year round with xmas lights. Very cheap.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: driving around with children looking at garish xmas light displays = one of the holiday season's great joys.

Im the light master. Put some up in the living room, have some on the porch, and my tree is covered in them. Im like Clark Griswold. When I have a house im hooking it up. None of that plastic santa shit though, just white lights.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to put some on my fire escape.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a house in my village which is festooned with tiny white lights. It looks lovely.

For the past couple of years I have had real Christmas trees (complete with roots) which I plant out in the garden afterwards. They've grown really well, and I put strings of coloured lights on those out in the garden. Other than that I don't really bother with outdoor decorations, because my dog pisses on them.

There is a house down the end of our road which has flashing Santas climbing up the walls and illuminated Santa gnomes and stuff. It truly is the epitome of tackiness.

three weeks pass...
Here are some photos of houses near me.
The first one is in Downers Grove, IL. The people who own the house are obviously insane. All of the windows of the house have department store style displays. The one in the garage (picture 5) is a 3-layer model train set-up. That thing on the left with an awning is a trail where Santa hangs out and greets kids on certain days (I had just missed him by an hour or so). That rectangular box thingee in front of the garage is a visitor register/donation box----as you might guess, the electricity they use during the holiday season is greater than that of sub-Saharan Africa. Picture 6 is of one side of the house. There's also a bunch of crap on the other side, but I think you get the idea.
The last photo is of a house just down the street from me. In comparison, it is a model of Puritanical restraint.

three years pass...

Some house that I go past on my way home has already got all their lights up and on for Christmas and the whole house is totally plastered in tacky Santas and glowing snowmen. I think they had them all blazing merrily away last week actually, maybe on about November 6 or something. This is way too early isn't it? Who are these batshit light fiends? Have they mixed up their months perhaps?

NickB, Thursday, 15 November 2007 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

it's all too bloody early. a just just went past with its windows down blaring "all i want for christmas is you". hint: if it's warm enough to have your windows down it's not fucking christmas yet.
