dud on anyone older than 10. And pretty dud on anyone younger than 10, too.

absolute dud.

real vintage-wearing betties don't touch these with ten-foot garter stays.

I love, love, love LOVE saddle shoes.

Call it my Audrey Horne obsession.

I make no apologies.

I think they could be kind of interesting for a day casual look. I had some suede ones in high school but I can't remember the last time I've seen them. In high school I especially lusted after some Bass pink and cream suede saddle shoes at Marshall Field's but I never got them. I think the problem is that in the literal versions the soles are usually so thick they look a little geeky but when Marc Jacobs brings out his version as he inevitably will, they will probably be A-dorable.

The imaginary refinement of saddle shoes could be nice with argyle socks, like these variations on wingtips:

I've always thought they were really cute, though I've never owned a pair.

I was thinking about these last summer, then I tried to give it up because I knew Sam would say it wasn't right, but I got Nylon mag to read on the train home last night, and they had a special On the Street, Baltimore section, and this very smart looking girl is wearing a tight purple and blue flowered low scoop neck button-up puffed and short sleeve top, a slim pale pink Prada pencil skirt, light blue bobby socks, and saddle shoes (Bass, maybe?, I can't tell). She has pulled back (dyed?) orange hair and black cat's eyes glasses. She looks good doing her John Waters Baltimore thing.

as with the boots-over-pants issue, i think it's genetically predetermined whether or not you can pull off saddle shoes. they tend to look lame as part of a whole pseudo-50s getup, but the look that mary describes above sounds charming since it mixes things up a bit.

I need to find these boots in my size and available in the USA or I am literally going to die.

I HAVE a really similar pair of boots to this that I picked up on ebay a few months ago for dirt cheap, it might be a place to look if you haven't already.
