What is Neil Young refering to in his "Southern Man" song about Lily Belle. And what does Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" -- 'Well I heard Ole Neil put her down' mean?

Not sure what it means, the whole thing goes-- "well I heard mr Young sing about her, Well I heard ol Neil put her down, Well I hope Neil Young will remember, A southern man don't need him around anyhow!"

it's a reaction to Neil's "Southern Man" which basically indicts the entire South as a buncha cross-burning racists.

to answer the thread question: Neil, always and forever, by a fucking longshot.

it's more a reaction to "alabama" - yall do realize they were both huge fans of each other right?

and if it's "alabama" + "southern man" vs. "sweet home alabama" i'll side with neil and say 'skynryd easy'

see also the Drive-by Trucker's "Ronnie & Neal", about all this

Neil, mostly by dint of longevity. I almost put "and for not fucking re-forming after key members died," but that's totally inaccurate!

Lynyrd Skynyrd. Neil is the "correct" answer, much like Sonic Youth is often the "correct" answer, but the right answer to me is the one I'd rather listen to more, and that would be the cheeseball rockers responsible for Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing "cheeseball" about Freebird!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the people in the band look like 70s cheeseballs-->"cheeseball rockers"

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever else lynyrd skynyrd might have been, "cheesy" was one thing that they weren't.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 15 December 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

god people! cheeseball does not equal cheesy!
looking like a 70s cheeseball means--->long haired fashion uniform of 1974.
Got it?

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 15 December 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think orbit's using 'cheeseball' as a pejorative here

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

no tetherball for you. Mr. Matos.
