what is the official stance on suit jackets as casual attire?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(ie. suit jacket + t-shirt + jeans + trainers)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

jacket plus jeans and trainers is awful. T-shirt under a suit is much better.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

with dress shoes?!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

something like a pair of campers, not trainers though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

But the jacket/t-shirt/jeans combo is totally Miami Vice 80s, and the 80s is back! Isn't it?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I realize I'm not the best person to answer fashion questions.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

T-shirt under a suit is much better.

. . . if you are Coldplay.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

:-/

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow to thread, I recall him rocking the blazer+jeans look (though not with a t-shirt, are you Jann Wenner?)

Allyzay, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just teasing. A sportcoat or suit jacket can look very nice worn without its spouse, as can suit trousers.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i sometimes did a variation on this theme when i went out in europe this summer because 1) i had a total of three t-shirts and one sweater with me and it felt good to NOT look like a total slob sometimes and 2) because proper dress clothes aren't really a viable option when you're travelling light

it felt alright and the time and i think i liked the way it looked but for some reason it seems wrong back here in canada. is this a case of "what goes on in europe STAYS in europe?!"

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

plus it looks really good with my trucker cap!!

*ducks behind well-placed stack of soul jazz comps and straight no chaser back issues*

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

How about a hoody under suit jacket with jeans? Like a thin hoody knit pullover sweater or even hoody zip-up over t-shirt under suit jacket. Over mittenlets, rowr.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(that last part was a joke. i have big ears and anyway trucker caps make me look like i should be filling your tires.)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i think it looks kinda sexxxy, except not with t-shirt. unless you cut diagonal slashes in it - that would be awesome. or an art-fag turtleneck.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, fashion is all about what you feel comfortable in, not what other people approve of, peace bro

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Wrongest statement ever. Perhaps the word you are looking for is style. The essence of fashion is discomfort and the desire to inspire approval from others.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

How about a hoody under suit jacket with jeans? Like a thin hoody knit pullover sweater or even hoody zip-up over t-shirt under suit jacket.

GAP commercials, to thread! Interesting business attire, though.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It has to be a good suit, and a good t-shirt and you have to not be coldplay for it to look good

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Christ Martin quite foxy. bnw is foxy too, he should not worry his pretty little head about fashion.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i think the thing that got me thinking second thoughts on the suit jacket wz seeing g. ribisi's insufferable hipster in lost in translation rocking one

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Glass of wine to Ed.

find Christ Martin quite foxy.

Best typo this year.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Did that put you off chunky terry cloth wristbands as well? I can see how it might. That character was so funny and accurate.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

but maybe it was the aviator glasses and velour wristbands that made him insufferable

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

haha x-post

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that's exactly why it is wrong, it is the uniform of arseholes and those who aspire to that moniker.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post, my post was re: lost in translation

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

u+k: wwgd?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am glad we have isolated the insufferable poseur troika of suit jacket, aviators and wristband. I nominate us for a Nobel award.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hoody with sport coat? I'm giving it a go.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I sometimes wear a grey jacket with a t-shirt and dark jeans, Spencer Chow-style. I don't wear trainers, though (I'm not sure if Spencer does). I enjoy this "look".

Fashion and me are like salsa and cereal.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

As I've stated elsewhere, it can be a great look, just don't wear *white* sneakers with it whatever you do.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that's exactly why it is wrong, it is the uniform of arseholes and those who aspire to that moniker.

my kneejerk reaction is to agree with this, but i'm not really certain why. are there such things as fashion rockists?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

only acceptable if you are al pacino

back off slutsky!! this is my love actually

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

just don't wear *white* sneakers with it whatever you do.

mark p. has my special dispensation to wear these with his jeans and suit jacket and hoody:

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I rarely do just a t-shirt with a sportcoat or suit jacket. and I never wear 'trainers' (I'm too formal, my dad has never worn a t-shirt) - though I might do Jack Purcells soon. Usually I wear a button down shirt or a sweater under the jacket - or my fave this year - a zip front jacket (think jump-suit top). Problem is, you can't just do this under a really nice suit jacket. It has to be more casual. A nice suit jacket can be worn with dark jeans and probably low trainers like Jack Purcells or Converse if you're a member of the Strokes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

your "love actually" the movie or your love, actually?

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

those shoes look like they were trampled by golf shoes

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

your "love actually" the movie or your love, actually?

sigh, both

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it does look smart, but some wankers tend to do it. I'm sorely tempted sometimes but it seems too obvious a move. I do have a few wristbands though, if you look at the autumn photo threads I am wearing a daf trucks one, surely a cardinal sin.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

are there such things as fashion rockists?

If you name check specific people in your thread title are you a fashion rockist rockist?

I like the idea of aggro golf shoes spiking the hippie cycling shoes.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not feeling those trainers felicity, they are a bit action man.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

For maximum studied wanker effect, please combine suit jacket, t-shirt, wristlet and Hoxton fin.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

here's my brown sport coat with zip jacket. Please try to ignore the matching blue mesh trucker hats. This pic is from Century 21 downtown!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but see, spencer, you're a model

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Puma. trainers. ever.

x-post

you kids look rockin!

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wow, Spencer, your friend looks a lot like my cousin! (identical twin cousins, actually)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i am warming to the idea of my navy suit jacket with jeans more but dare i attempt? with smart shirt or t-shirt? considering at the mo i am probably gonna wear same jacket to wedding this is probably a horrendous idea. may pick up an additional jacket and trousers in NY but i will have to shove it all in a rucksack eventually so this too may be unwise.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

steve after that paradigm-smashing red tie you can do anything

i mean that in a good way

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean red shirt surely...tho i do have a alternate black shirt and red tie combo as well, just waiting for the right indie night moment to come along

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

was it a black shirt w. red tie or other way around?

either way, fixed up, looking sharp

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ohhhh since u asked

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone post a picture of this hoodie-blazer deal?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y should post a pic, who knows what he looks like these days eh?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

tracksuit top with zipper under the sportcoat is a great look, especially with a v-neck t-shirt, jeans and leather running shoes or jack purcells.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

if i had one i would. for one thing, my hair's all gone! maybe i will arrange a photoshoot.

spencer is totally describing the prototypical smack jockey outfit.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see a picture of this hoodie-under-blazer thing, because it sounds like an utter disaster and reason enough to mercilessly mock whoever does it. But since I generally like you guys I wanna believe that it's not foolish looking. PIC! PIC!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not so into the hoodie thing (something too rave about hoods for me still), but the high necked zip up track suit top works well. I'll try to find a pic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.fanzone50.com/faves/AlanR-Dogma.jpg

BEHOLD THE METATRON, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like a hoodie. I used to avoid hoodies and your earth "sneakers" because they made me feel like a big kid, but I'm over that now. What hoodies are acceptable in terms of brands and stuff? I don't think I want one of those silly neighbourhoodies.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus mine would say "Berkeley" which is wick wick wack.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Altho "West Berkeley" might be acceptable.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No wait, that would be awful. No neighbourhoodies.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

mine are all from target.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, Target is great, isn't it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

if i didnt have to buy my pants from ex-circus performers, i'd never shop anywhere else.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ewwwwww

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"pants"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, you need one that says: "Open Your Eyes and RECOGNIZE: Oakland 2000"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sterling has one of those, I think!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hoodies + suit jackets =

hstencil, Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you can never know too much about rugs

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I fixed the image upthread where I'm wearing a jacket with a zip up (non-hoodie) underneath.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sport coat and jeans today.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 9 April 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, these "sportscoat plus" looks aren't doing it for me.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Friday, 9 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

But I'm boring.

three months pass...
REVIVE!

Revivalist (Revivalist), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:15 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
fashion question. for party. (no jeans allowed.)

pt 1) grayish-black herringbone or navy blue stretch cord blazer?

then

pt 2) which pants with blazer? (for example: grayish-black herringbone blazer and polished twill gray pants DOES IT GO?)

amateur!!st, Monday, 23 August 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago)

blazer will have to go well w/jeans since that is how i may be wearing it in future.

however if jeans+blazer is really so awful PLEASE LET ME KNOW

thank you

amateur!!st, Monday, 23 August 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

sad i think mary + felicity + phil-two have disappeared from this place

amateur!!st, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago)

We were not fashionable enough for them. I saw Mary the other day and she made me walk on the other side of the street so she wouldn't have to be seen with me.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago)

phil two's around, mostly just on the Olympics thread.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

mary is a skinhead now.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, she mentioned. She needs her own BBCA special on the outer reaches of Anglophilia.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

^^^

the above is true!

david acid (gareth), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Where is Felicity these days? She really does seem to have vanished off the face of the earth :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Last I heard, she was nursing young Mark Prior back to health in her spare time.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

amateurist let it be known that i am a huge fan of blazer/jeans, if rocked correctly

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago)

this blazers/jeans gig is very chuck woolery. you might as well go straight up members only jacket zipped to your adam's apple and plaid pants.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

bring it

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

it's not really a party if you can't wear jeans

oops (Oops), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Mary becoming a skinhead is the greatest thing I've read all year. Or perhaps the worst - I get confused.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

amateur!!st, your choice is a tricky one. I'm actually not qualified to match blazers with other patterns - I only know how to match them with jeans, some cords or maybe khaki's (which is very tricky). Different blazers and slacks goes into Jarvis Cocker territory - I can't do it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I think the "grayish-black herringbone blazer and polished twill gray pants" would go together if you make sure that your shirt, belt and shoes match in some form or other so you don't wind up with 3-4 colors -- that's what doesn't work and makes you look a bit like Patches the Clown.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

How's "JEN" these days? Hm.
