the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

Firefighters had to use boats to rescue people as more than 100 millimetres (four inches) of rain were dumped on the city in just over two hours.

"Ingenuity Triumphs Over God" answers.

Sounds similar to the monsoons of India.

The lightning was fantastic! It was like god was having a rave, my boi said. Seriously, damn sky was strobing with repeated sheet lightning for HOURS. I am fackin' exhausted today cos I sat on the balcony til 1am drinking and watching it and I got a bit carried away, oooops.

I didnt know about the flood stuff til I saw the news in the morning, the storm only skirted St Kilda, we didnt even get any hail. Loads of lovely fat rain tho.

i'm very glad there was no hail round my way. for a start the front window was wide open all night (i r an idiot) and my car's already in bad enough nick

It hammered on us in Brunswick, and kept me awake for an hour or so. It was pretty intense.

This morning when I was walking to the tram stop there was dirt all over the footpaths that had been washed out of people's gardens. I also saw a waist-high brick fence that had been pushed over by a buildup of water in the yard behind it. (!!)

The lightning was awesome. For about an hour before the rain started it was amazing to watch from Collingwood - you could see the forks strike between big fluffy clouds like that scene with Vulcan from Fantasia.

Lucky my leaking ceiling was fixed beforehand! Damn that skylight right outside my room and its crystal clear sonix!

Goddamn, I hope there's a repeat tonight. I'm betting on it, it's been as hot and sticky as Darwin all day here.

Spectaclar laser light show out my way, but minimal damage.

In 1983, 11.30 or so in the evening, I remember hearing my coffee cup rattle and seeing my bedroom curtains move and thinking 'the wind's gotten up a bit'. First light next morning my parents get a frantic phone call from my father's parents in England, who had picked up an Evening Standard with the 72-point ripper banner headline 'Massive Quake Hits Melbourne' with the sub-head 'Thousands Hurled From Their Beds'. Mum and Dad's first question was, 'what earthquake?' They had slept through the lot.

'I think God clearly intends to destroy Melbourne.'

At least He's not trying to turn it into Sydney.
