Firefighters had to use boats to rescue people as more than 100 millimetres (four inches) of rain were dumped on the city in just over two hours.

This morning when I was walking to the tram stop there was dirt all over the footpaths that had been washed out of people's gardens. I also saw a waist-high brick fence that had been pushed over by a buildup of water in the yard behind it. (!!)

In 1983, 11.30 or so in the evening, I remember hearing my coffee cup rattle and seeing my bedroom curtains move and thinking 'the wind's gotten up a bit'. First light next morning my parents get a frantic phone call from my father's parents in England, who had picked up an Evening Standard with the 72-point ripper banner headline 'Massive Quake Hits Melbourne' with the sub-head 'Thousands Hurled From Their Beds'. Mum and Dad's first question was, 'what earthquake?' They had slept through the lot.
