That drunken feeling....

OK, I'll come across as a total weirdo saying this but bear with me. This was instigated by reading the thread on sleep paralysis and made me remember something.

I'm assuming that you all know that spinning feeling you get when you're drunk and close your eyes and everything goes a bit weird? Well I've found that I can induce that feeling in myself without the aid of alcohol, or drugs for that matter before you ask. The last time it happened was during my second lithotripsy, around the point that "I want you" (by Bob Dylan) was playing on my CD-R I compiled as a soundtrack. The two people performing the litho noticed I had gone a bit glazed and asked if I was alright, and I was fine. It happens mostly as I'm dropping to sleep but sometimes it will be during the day and it's quite disconcerting. I suppose I bring it on by staring at one point for long enough. It used to happen more frequently as a child and has been less frequent as I get older, but it still happens every so often. Is there a real medical term for this, or am I just barking?

I'm kind of hoping that someone else is going to say "Yes, I know what you mean" and not "You fucking weirdo, Rob".

I await responses with trepidation.

vertigo?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, it happens sitting down, or lying down, or anywhere really.

this reminds me i haven't done that 'press the arteries on your neck make yourself pass out and let your friend catch you' trick in way too long

Low blood sugar, probably.

WHAT? Sounds like fun actually.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't max ernst used to do this thing?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't think it could be low blood sugar, the amount of sweets I chomp through each day.

Would low blood pressure cause it though? Whenever I've had blood taken out of me (for ops or whatever) I've always fainted and fitted in quite a nasty way (and had dreams of Neil Young songs oddly enough), and the blood donations service have told me to never darken their doors again. Could they be related, do you think?

Rob, I have low blood pressure/blood pressure regulation probs, and that sort of feeling happens to me all the time.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? I'd never really put the two things together until writing on this thread, so maybe I should investigate further. I'd not really thought of low blood pressure as being a genuine condition.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Low b.p. isn't a genuine condition, as long as it's still in normal range and can adjust to postural changes normally (otherwise there are conditions like Neurally Mediated Hypotension and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). I'm not sure if that particular spinniness is related to blood pressure, but my blood pressure certainly makes me dizzy/iffy in a lot of other ways. I had an inner ear prob in the past as well, and it could be something residual from that rather than b.p. though.

In any case, I know what you mean.
