Should I jack in my job for one paying less, with worse terms and conditions and possibly less prospects

Been doing my current job for over five years. In a bit of a rut. Saw a job as Chief Exec of an Indie cinema near where I live. I fit the person spec, have big ideas of how the place could be improved, but the pay is worse, the hours are worse, the holidays and pension are worse and I get the feeling thatt he kind of charity trust that runs it will not brook too much tinkerin'. arts admin looks like a hell-hole I should stay away from.

But am I in a rut?

If it is what you want to do, go for it. If it doesn't work out, you can always quit and have your old job on your resume as well. You might have to work harder, but if it's doing something you love it shouldn't be so bad, huh?

job satisfaction can make up for a lot.

Get a lot of job satisfaction in current job too though. Fear I might get less. FEAR FEAR IS THE RUB.

Pete, if you don't even know if you're in a rut then you're probably not. Why not take this wake-up call to explore promotion etc. opportunities in your current job too? Do you have an understanding superior you can talk to about where you're headed? Maybe admitting than another job has intrigued you might be the catalyst to more cash and responsibility.

Job satis-faction? What is this craziness of which you speak?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

so you like where you are? then you can find other ways in your life to not be in a rut.

Luna, it only exists if you believe and clap! Like Tinkerbell.

The only rut I am in in my current job is it all being rather confortable and easy (which is a nice rut to be in). There is no chance of internal promotion (though some chance the job could get better paid) and I don't really have a boss, but I don't want to stay in SU management all my life.

I guess the best way of making the decision is apply and get a feel for it at the interview stage. Obv they would have to offer me the job too before I made the decison (ooh, get bighead me).

So I'll do that tomrrow. Cheers.

I'd be worried coz of the pension and job security aspects, and the long hours (but that's just me). You should make sure you have an adequate private pension, and I guess it wouldn't be so hard to get back into the public sector or whatever if it didn't work out.

I'm still trying to untie the phrase "jack in my job"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"job satisfaction" is a myth

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

bullshit. no, it isn't. One can identify with one's source of income. It helps if you differentiate between just "a job" and "your life's work".

Looks like it's time to try and resurrect my "beats off is work" pun which absolutely nobody took to the last time I used it.

Where were you ten years ago? And do I get fairy dust?

Arts admin looks like a hell-hole I should stay away from

But it'd be an amazing thing to do, would possibly be very unusual and rewarding.
That said: are you in like Ricky Gervais' old job?

Erm, and the problem with this is...?

I don't know. I mean, running an indie cinema sounds like the deadest of dead end jobs in the world, but it might make up for it in other ways. Fantasy jobs (like opening bookshops and running indie cinemas etc. etc.) I suspect are much better in fantasy.
