I would really like to be one of those people who can type really fast, though. My mother was a great typist when she was working; she was indeed one of those people whose typing sounded like it was straight out of the movies. I thought it was the coolest thing, especially when she was typing out a letter on her old typewriter and I would be right there with her doing my homework. I would hear the *clack clack clack* sound of the typewriter and think, "Wow, that is something magical." I then tried to teach myself how to type, and ended up being able to do more than just hunt & peck by the time I entered keyboarding class in HS.
So, I'm kinda okay at typing. I'm quite good at ten-key, though.

It would totally make sense for all kids to have touch typing lessons these days - in this 'everyone types' age productivity is surely being held back by slow keyboard skills? And err.. ILE.
― N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 4 December 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)
I half learned to type properly last year - I still need some more practice on the symbols (especially as I use them a lot in my work), but I seem to be a comfortable 40 wpm on plain text. However, I'd like to be more like 80wpm - any tips on how best to accomplish this? Is it best to focus on accuracy? I feel like a lot of what slows me down is backspacing to correct what I've written. Also, is there a good way to get a rhythm going? I feel like sometimes I get into a zone and my fingers are moving substantially faster than at other times, and I wonder if they really are, and if so if it's because my brain has somehow established a natural typing pace.
― toby, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
I can type really fast (and accurately, too), but only if I turn off my brain.
― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:50 (seventeen years ago)
i'm def around 80wpm or whatever REALLY FUCKING FAST is. i don't really know that i have any tips though, it's just through experience -- do you look at the keys? i never really look at the keys, which i htink helps my speed.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago)
according to TypingTest.com ...
Net Speed: 83 WPM Accuracy: 96% Gross Speed: 86 WPM
Bow down.
― Eric H., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:05 (seventeen years ago)
Of course, when I'm actually writing my own material and not transcribing, it's probably more like 8.3 words per minute.
― Eric H., Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago)
i transcribe too... get me a gig!!
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Ugh! I guess accuracy might well be my issue. I don't look at the keys when typing letters, but I sometimes have to for stuff like %, $. I definitely need to work on those.
― toby, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago)
Haha... I only meant transcribing from the text on the Web site's typing test.

Though I'm barely awake and could feel the performance anxiety... transcribing killed me too - trying to jump the gun on commas.

Yeah, and the whole "can't go back if you inadvertantly hit the space bar" is really dumb.

Not terrible for a person who is much more used to taking dictation that transcription.

I got good at faster typing through AIM needs, way moreso than typing papers or typing for work.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:08 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, chatrooms and AIM did a lot for my typing speed also
my freshman year roommate hardly used a computer before college so i got to witness his gradual evolution from hunt-and-peck to home-row-whiz

Pecking with two fingers: Net Speed: 69 WPM Accuracy: 100% Gross Speed: 69 WPM
Touch-typing: Net Speed: 28 WPM Accuracy: 96% Gross Speed: 29 WPM
It's obvious that I haven't touch-typed since high school. Pecking works just fine for me, though I'm a little worried about the long-term side-effects of pounding on the keys -- i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis and other nasties.
I've heard that if you have to type with two fingers, it's best to keep your other fingers clenched into a fist so as to minimize the stress on your tendons & related tissue. I try that from time to time, but I can hardly ever keep it up for more than a day or two...
― hawth, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
I have stopped people in their tracks by typing so fast. But I'm just 85-90wpm, which I suspect is a pretty common speed on here. Still, I had a job interview where the person kept asking "really? 85wpm?" in wonder.

As in, if you're interviewing someone, and they have 85wpm+, they probably spend a lot of time online.
― Casuistry, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 02:39 (seventeen years ago)
right. i just mean, in general, i get that from people a lot too -- 85 wpm??!!

i have to transcribe interviews with people for school and work, that's helped a lot in terms of automatic typing. because you're usually not looking at the keyboard and not thinking about what you're typing and just trying to hit the words you hear as fast as you can.

yeah i find i type way faster the less i try to comprehend the meaning of the words/sentences. but trying not to understand is kind of harder than trying to type faster. i am fine with my 77 wpm and comprehension i guess. wld not want to do transcription for a living ow
also these newish mac keyboards, with the flat keys, i'm still getting used to. my toshiba laptob kind of has the most awesome keyboard for really fast typing though. too bad my toshiba is not a mac <3

same here!
how u type??????
― Just Another Lyre (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 28 March 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
I do that too a lot of the time. It leaves the right hand free(r) to reach over and grab the mouse or PgDn etc.
I'd known for a while that I tend to hit "y" with the left hand and it's supposed to be under the right hand, but I didn't realise how many other keys I hit with the wrong hand until I tried to use my flatmate's "natural keyboard" (split down the middle with the two sides at an angle to each other). Can barely type with that thing.
