RFI: Contact lenses

I just got some contact lenses, monthly disposable ones. I can wear them for eight hours a day. One of them is a toric lens. I love them.

I was informed that the visual acuity would be somewhat poorer than with my specs, particularly with the toric lens. I was happy to deal with this if it wasn't too bad. Only trouble is, the acuity is noticably bad all the time. I have to squint at my monitor, the awesome cathederal outside my window is blurry and there's no way I'd drive in them.

Can any of you other contact wearers confirm whether this is the best I can expect or has something has gone awry?

Deosn't sound right to me. The only time I really notice my lenses being less clear than specs is at dusk, but it's not detrimental enough to prevent me driving. But then I'm wearing normal soft lenses. Have you gone back to the opticians to query?

They are in the right eyes? You've not accidently swapped them over?

Heh, I always feel sick when I do that!

my short-range vision is definitely a lot worse with lenses in, for instance i'd always wear glasses to read. actually now i think about it, my eyesight is always better with glasses than with lenses. i only wear them beause i'm vain.

I'm sure I haven't got them the wrong way round as the toric lens has small marks on it so that I can orientate it on my eyeball correctly. I'm going to go back to the ops at lunchitme today but I thought I'd better ask to (a) save me a journey (although it is a nice day and I have a fab new pair of headphones) and (b) potentially save me looking like a spazmo.

It sounds not right to me? I don't know what a toric lens is, but if you have a strong astigmatism then normal contacts will be a fair bit worse than glasses. I have one and got the cheaper, ordinary contacts that don't correct for it. I can still see fine though, just not as sharply as with my glasses.

My vision is much the same if not better. I use them "Night and Day" ones as I need to wear them from waking until sleep.

A tip - lenses are a third of the price in Australia. I am in the UK.

A toric lens is a lens that corrects a strong astigmatism. I have one (my right eye).

Mark - I am in the UK too. Do you mean that I should mail order them from Oz?

I bought mine in Goa - 12 pairs of monthly disposables for £30 ra ra.

Is the right one much worse than the left?
Are you wearing them inside out?
Did you soak them in porridge?

We must get to the bottom of this.

If you're buying them in from abroad you need to be wary of customs charges. Also you end up paying for after care appointments, if you actually go for any, and eye tests.

Right eye vision is worse than the left both with and without contacts. Left eye is still occasionally poorer than with specs. I'm not wearing them inside out as they don't stay in my eyes if I put them in the wrong way round. Not porridge, cheerios.

Will need to assess various financial options.
