Which ones are your favourites?

Obviously a subset of these are Pirate films. What good pirate films are there?

All spaceship movies are really sea-faring movies in disguise

What good pirate films are there?

Curse Of The Black Pearl (POTC) is pretty cool

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty Good. I feel there must be better pirate films out there. Has anyone seen a film version of "High Wind To Jamaica"? Lord of the Flies with added pirates, winner!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

To Jaws I add the African Queen.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Apocalypse Now
Crimson Tide
Dead Calm

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

there's an old film, where a couple are going to commit suicide. they have a dream about being on a boat going to heaven, and they realise that all the staff on the boat are those who committed suicide, and they don't get to go to heaven. in the end, they decide to not die after all. just like that..

i think the moral is if you spend too much time working, you don't go to heaven. and i can't remember what the film is called.

but its a film. and there's a boat in it.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Calm is a great movie. Billy Zane has never been better (!)

gobemouche, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mr. Roberts" WWII comedy set on a navy destroyer. Made in the 50's but it's actually funny, and sad too.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely destroy Speed 2: Cruise Control - the lamest sequel ever.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it when the submarine has got a massive drill on the front.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

DEEP RISING!!

jones (actual), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Spy Who Loved Me! Giant nuke-sub-devouring OCEAN TANKER OF DOOM! (also Jaws and the wicked-ass '77 Esprit, but still)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

L'Atalante, one of the best films ever.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

last week i went through some old film cans and there was a film from about 1923-odd part of which took place during wwi on a submarine. i can't figure out what the film is though.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Boat Trip starring Cuba Gooding jr natch.

pete s, Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, what about Carry On Jack, in which the Carry On crew are on a ship during the Napoleonic Wars? Terry Scott's uniform is stolen on him by a lovely lady who then impersonates him on the ship in an unconvincing fashion while he is pressganged as an able seaman. It is one of the greatest films ever made.

three years pass...
"Mr. Roberts" WWII comedy set on a navy destroyer. Made in the 50's but it's actually funny, and sad too.

Great film all around. My introduction to Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, James Cagney and William Powell. One of my dad's favorites, which probably shouldn't surprise anyone.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Jason and the Argonauts
Treasure Island
Fitzcarraldo
Lifeboat

sexyDancer, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Aguire too!

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Aguire is actually one of my favorite boat movies.

Deliverance

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

A Night at the Opera. Groucho's tiny stateroom. An enormous sea-trunk.

And, if I'm not mistaken, 17 boiled eggs.

Oilyrags, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

The assorted Buster Keaton boat films:

The Navigator
The Love Nest
The Boat
Steamboat Bill Jr.

shieldforyoureyes, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

I kinda love Crimson Tide, or at least I used to. What are other good movies where dudes yell at each other on a submarine?

Jordan, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

how could this thread have got so far without a shout for Under Siege? Seagal as a navy seal who also cooks for crissakes...

Jack Half-a-Prayer, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite Seagal flick, easily.

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Captain Blood

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 February 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

And the Ship Sails On
The Lady Eve

Teenbeat, Monday, 26 February 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Was there ever a Love Boat movie?

nickalicious, Monday, 26 February 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

The Sea Wolf, with Edward G. Robinson! From a novel by Jack London.

patita, Monday, 26 February 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

Friday the Thirteeneth VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Despite title, 95% of the film takes place on a boat.

sexyDancer, Monday, 26 February 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, there's a staple of Channel 5 Sunday afternoon teledramas called "Two Came Back" starring Melissa Joan Hart about a bunch of kids who go out sailing and it all goes a bit wrong. Any suspense about survival I imagine to be somewhat ruined by the film title.

So, um, destroy that.

ailsa, Monday, 26 February 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

lifeboat

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

King Kong (although the parts on the boat are the most boring by far in the movie.)

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

Great TV movie called 'Hostile Waters' set on two different submarines, one American, one Russian, that collide mere days before the Rekjavik (sp?) peace summit and nearly provoke WWIII. It's awesome!

unfished business, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Buster Keaton's THE NAVIGATOR! He uses a swordfish as a sword in a scene filmed underwater at barely-above-freezing temps.

Abbott, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

history is made at night

gershy, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

Character is what you are in the dark.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

I have a soft spot for submarine movies. I even liked that recent one with the name that was a bunch of numbers. A friend of mine was disgusted with it because when the Americans boarded the German sub one of them exclaimed in a panic that everything on the instrument panel was labeled IN GERMAN!!!!
I find that forgivable, as long as there are enough DEPTH CHARGES with shaking camera!

Beth Parker, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon - not sure if it's good or bad, but it is set on a boat at least part of the time.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

People. People. I give you Hunt for the Red October. You are welcome.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

I like Master and Commander. In fact I more than like it. It is one of my very favourite films.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

was it "Light Ship" ? Where the floating lighthouse slash boat picked up some castaways and things turned messy. I loved that movie.

Ste, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

I've read this thread twice and couldn't see anyone mention 'Juggernaut'.

also, African Queen

Ste, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

i think submarine movies are my favourite subgenre of those matinee war films they always show (it's the claustrophoba i think, gives them an edge).

Submarine X1 and Above Us The Waves (both about the sinking of the Tirpitz with midget submarines).

there's another great one where they all die. oh, Morning Departure - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042810/

613 imdb hits for submarine.

Stingray. 8)

koogs, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

As well as the claustrophobia, they always have that great ping noise going on, which reminds you that time is running out for our plucky heroes. I like submarine movies too. Alien reminds me of good submarine movies a bit.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

There was a cool submarine with lots of pinging noises in the old batman film. I think it was the Penguin's.
