Cannibal Holocaust is the most horrible cannibal movie I've ever seen-- really makes you feel bad in all kinds of ways.

Where is this parallel universe where a movie called "Cannibal Holocaust" is expected to be a feel-good film?

I could go and pick up 'Cannibal Holocaust' on DVD at HMV, Oxford Street, right now, it's always in stock. Those crazy, deranged fucking Italians - the difference between this and 'Salo'...it's not wafer-thin, but not vast. It has autistic merit. It's better than the sequel. It's better than 'Zombie Flesh Eaters'. Everyone who hasn't seen this film wants to see it, I think. Well I did. I wish I hadn't. My mate was LAUGHING. The fucker. He also had this other Ruggero Deodato film called 'The Last Cannibal World' - he was a fan, not in the context of (I hope) cannibalism, but Italian Horror in general. I don't think I really needed to see a sea turtle being disembowelled in vivid, lingering detail, but there ya go. The film has a good soundtrack, it's actually pretty well made, weirdly.

Cannibal Holocaust (UK) is thankfully devoid of its nasty animal cruelty. I hate hate hate that film. Last Cannibal World is bollocks too. Interesting to know some of you have seen these films. Salo was crap too.

I just watched 'Trouble Every Day', which is kind of an arthouse cannibal movie - there's a really sickening bit where Beatrice Dalle eats a guy's tongue. Good movie, I thought.

Have also seen most of the Italian gutcrunchers - yes, the animal snuffs in 'Cannibal Holocaust' are horrible, but it seems like there's a bit of a dbl standard involved w/ regard to the BBFC cutting those scenes out - ie they don't blink an eye abt the animal killings in 'Weekend', 'Apocalypse Now', 'Time of the Wolf' etc. etc.

Salo is the one of the greatest films ever made.

cannibal holocaust truly is one of the most vile things committed to film. i haven't seen weekend or time of the wolf but i suppose an argument could be made about artistic merit, or plot advancement, or something re: the cow bit in apocalypse now but i won't be the one to make it.

other than ch i've seen the romero zombie flicks and a few rip offs thereof (if those count), and cannibal! the musical (which i found hilarious the first time through, and sorta ehh on next viewing - though the songs are still totally top drawer).

oh, and titus, and the cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover!

and ravenous, i guess, or was that a vampire movie? i can't remember.

annnd i saw eating raoul when i was about ten or something. didn't understand it but i saw boobies!

i haven't seen alive, though. i'm not a fannibal or anything.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ravenous was the mother of all cannibal movies. When they would eat someone they become more powerful. Kind of like Highlander, but more real and creepy.

also cannibal the musical?

solent green?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked "Delicatessen"

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll make a defence - Apocalypse Now features a ritual that was being done anyway, and Coppola filmed it. The ritual is not in the original script.

Cannibal Holocaust is an animal "snuff" film that is designed to appeal to the sickest of minds.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Salo really one of the greatest films ever made, or does it just seem that way? It's the slew-side of Emmanuelle.

Why did C-man even bring up this topic? Is it because of that story in the news? He seems disgusted by the whole thing...is he just coaxing the sickos or something?

Italy is the 2nd great cinematic nation.

Oliver Craner, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Francophiles might want to spit on me for that.

Oliver Craner, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

considering that i couldn't get through the article about the german cannibal in the news last weekend without gagging
(article at http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/story.jsp?story=469042)

i'd say that i probably can't sit through a cannibal flick without barfing. i'll call that a dud.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Italy is not the second best filmmaking nation. That would probably be Japan or Hong Kong (I'm assuming we all agree the yanks are number one and those who say otherwise are just in denial).

C-Man (C-Man), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I know little about Japanese or Hong Kong cinema, I was just being willful and con/pretentious. I bow to you C-Man! Tell me about the best of Japan and Honk Kong and I will listen.

America number 1, of course, of course.

Oliver Craner, Friday, 5 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Cannibal Holocaust years ago. I've never felt inclined to repeat the experience. The filming of the main section is kinda Blair Witch, if you like that sort of thing. The animal stuff thoroughly sickened and repulsed me... I've never been troubled by seeing chunks of latex hacked to pieces, but this was foul, and totally undermined what little artistic merit the film might have had.

The couple other cannibal films I've seen were even crappier, though slightly less offensive.

Dud.

ravenous is terrific.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Fires on the Plain and Deathmaker are the best cannibal movies out there. No contest.
