Really, really long threads, classic or dud

Very dud. Not only do they take forever to download, they're invariably the most boring ones, full of inane 'witty' chatter. 30-60 posts = the best.

I suppose you're hoping people don't post to your thread then?

They're classic if you're participating in them at the time, and it's an organic growing thing. But coming in on a thread that's already been going for 200-odd posts is like waking up and finding out that your housemates stayed up all night and had a party without you, and you come in in the morning to find your kitchen trashed and all the vodka drank.

It does depends on the thread. Some of the longer threads turn out to be the best ones, and then others turn out to be mind-numbingly dull with the same people arguing the same points over and over again.

And there's excrement smeared all over your kitchen units.

Kate talks sense. I can't sit down and read a 200-post thread, it just seems like a chore. but when you're following it from the beginning, watching it build slowly, it's pretty great. although it all depends on the quality of the writing, too.

Sometimes, every now and then, there's one which is worth wading through afterwards. I'm trying to think of an example... I think that the "is it OK if the guy keeps going after the girl has come" thread, after the usual smutty joking, actually had some very interesting points which made it worthwhile.

And of course, crush threads, too, because I'm nosey like that and like to know who has crushes on whom...

Very true.

Conversely, being at the start of a really great thread is like going to a party in it's early stages, staying till way too late, going home, coming back the next day, spending lunch there and staying too long the next day as well. and so on.

depends on the thread. There are times when everybody gets into a certain rythym, and things just flow. The jokes aren't as good when read later, but if you're one of the participants, a good thread can carry you thru 3-4 hours of the day.

and then later, you look back and it's nothing but bad one-liners and random pictures and indignation and other randomness.

However, more than one person has remarked how, if left to its own devices, a thread will eventually redeem itself.
