c/d: staying awake 48 hours, then sleeping for 24

I did this at school a few times. It was mind-altering. I did get work done, but it was wierd when I came back later and saw it and wondered "what the hell is that"? Probably like working stoned, it had some good results and a lot of crap. The wierdest part is the sleeping 24 hours. It's like a coma- then sometimes you will wake up totally paralyzed. Ever heard of waking paralysis? That's when your brain comes out of sleep but your body is still immobile. So you're like that for 24 hours then wake up feeling like a zombie and walk around in slow motion the rest of the day. The next day, you feel refreshed though. The wierdest part was I never even pissed for the entire 24 hours and I woke up a little dehydrated so I could only leak a little.

Apparently, some french lady lived to 120 years old by doing this her whole life.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone else is doing this and you take them to the pub at around hour 42 then you're usually guaranteed a good story or two for later.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmm.

I remember getting back from work around 18:00 fri night, set to work editing a video from the "Turkey show" escapades, around 2 am, thinking of crashng out, Work call with an emergency. Get there, sort out stuff, decide to go to Camden for breakfast, get there 8 am sat morn, shop for a bit, go back to work, all well, go home, crash out around 5pm, wake up Monday morning, refreshed, 8 am.

The longest I've ever slept in my entire life is 13 hours, and that was after being awake for just-short-of-72.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the sleep part of this formula sounds GREAT

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you heard about this wonderful and fascinating disease called Bipolar Manic Depression? Well, this is the way to catch it!

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard of a nutcase theory under which you are supposed to sleep for exactly 15 minutes precisely every 4 hours or something. Ugh.

I've slept for 20 hours on a few occasions.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

wasnt that 15 minutes thing what jfk followed?

i dont believe that for a minute btw

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Margaret Thatcher reportedly only slept a few hours every night. But then again, this only goes to prove she was a lizard.

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a come-down once from 8 cans of red bull during two very long days of revision (reads: learning the whole year's worth of stuff due to skipping lectures) and dissertation writing, and slept for 18 hours. It was kind of fun, except I was frigging hungry when i woke up and it was something like midnight, and had to drag my lethargic self down to the curry house which was luckily still open (didn't have a pizza menu). When I got the curry I ate like those kids from deprived countries they show you on charity adverts. It was great though.

ken c, Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Bipolar etc..

Channel 4 supposedly doing an experimental prog, people stay awake all week, and the one that gets the most points in tasks get the big cash prize.

It sounded interesting, but I passed...

I think that was prob wise...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to move to a planet where the days are maybe 28-30 hours long so I can be awake for 20 but still sleep for 10. I don't mesh well with this 24-hour crap.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The one that can still function and hasn't been reduced to baby talk gets the prize...

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

staying awake for more than a week will take you on a strange spiritual journey. Best done in safe circumstances, though.

possible m (mandinina), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i.e. not in the "Big brother house" or wherever...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly. no lasting evidence is wanted, really....

possible m (mandinina), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy fuck Nickalicious, 72 hours? I almost puked from doing 55. That's the longest I've done with no sleep.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that french lady made a rap record which even alex in nyc cd be down with!!

also when asked why she lived so long she said: "i smoked a cigar every day and ate nothing but chipolatas"

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I could say that lsd played no role in that 72 hour stretch...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Been there, done that....due to jetlag. Felt like I was stoned or something, without the ggod trip beforehand.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

THAT Kate (kate), Friday, 5 December 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I stayed awake for 3 days once (I was organising luggage etc on a trip and went a bit nuts) and it pretty much sucked. I just got annoyed at everyone. I threw a glass at some loud dorks on a boat.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 5 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I only did this once. Because I had to work and dEUS was playing in Brussels for two nights. My friend complained I wasn't dancing the second night (she came along). hah! I used to do all nighters quite a lot. It wasn't that hard then, the only problem was doing calculations (in the shop.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(I never did the 24 hr sleep thing though... only when I had a massive hangover two years ago. I can't remember what I did that night I was drinking gallons of alcohol. Maybe better.)

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Handed in!! This morning on the walk from Archway Emma had to, um, take a powder something fierce, and the walk was feeling like forever because we have THREE MASSIVE SUITCASES and I'm like dude, just stop in this "caf," it's like the code of the street - they HAVE to let you pee. So she goes in and I can see through the window that they're negging her and I was so delirious and/or psyched that I just went in and was like "do I have to buy something??" And the guy's like "it's for eat-in customers only." So I amp the voice up to obnoxious levels, like really braying, and I'm like "can I just buy a coffee and sit down for a SIP, can she pee then??" And I don't know, that did it, the other customers started chortling - this place was like tumbleweeds, dead still, like nothing had moved very fast in there for years, just the sullen clank of cutlery and bright lighting on formica, and he was like "alright, alright" so I gestured for Emma to come in and I went outside. I saw the owner haranguing the OTHER CUSTOMERS about ME.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, VICTOIRE, n'est-ce pas??? haha I should do this all the time!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

When nathalie said "I only did this once" I thought she meant "woke up with a hard-on"...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I swear I saw a body drop.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 6 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

chik chik chik

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 6 December 2003 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I did this in college. I was totally depressed for a while. I'd go to a computer lab with a snack each night and stay there for hours and hours surfing the net and working on my webpage. Then I'd leave and the sun would be out and birds chirping. Then I'd sleep all afternoon.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Saturday, 6 December 2003 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

Urp. 4 hours sleep last night and an all-nighter to pull tonight to get a dissertation in. Then into uni at 8am to get it printed/bound. then to see friend's new baby while I'm up here in the North. then late train home taking 4+ hours. Home 11pm. Work 9am next day.
