what's the oddest place you've seen a tramp/vagrant/downandout/poorhomelessperson?

i saw one in Walthamstow last night - i couldn't work out why he was in Walthamstow. this is surely the furthest north in London you are likely to encounter such a sighting. what about south, east and west tho? I have not encountered one further west than Chiswick. do they only dwell in metro areas and coastal towns?

I've seen them at Turnpike Lane - is this further north than W'stow?

on a footbridge over a street in the docks area of Bristol.

i saw one in Enfield once

As I've said elsewhere, Edgware has two famous "tramps", although one of them is dead.

There's one hangs about outside Tescos in Leyton. Wears a Spurs shirt. I feel great sympathy for tramps. But not him.

There should be another thread about the celebrity homeless. Berkeley obviously has its fair share.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't been to Enfield for ages. I went to school there you know.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, tramps are different tho as they are not always homeless. i suppose i really just mean beggars.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a big jolly tramp with a beard who sits outside the shop in Blackheath Village drinking beer and talking to random passers-by. He stays there all day and then goes home to his wife, apparently - so probably more a psychological fuckup than a real homeless person.

Well, according to Cabbage the one I see regularly in Putney/Barnes is further out of town than Walthamstow... He smells of pee but looks like he makes a real effort to be presentable, and I feel for him a bit really.

In fairness to Chris, he's good at quizzes.

In my car. There's an old black dude who used to see me every day when I used to deliver pizza. I talked to him once in a while, nice guy but pretty fucked and smelly. He would hang out on the street and flag me down when I drove by. He always acted like he wanted a ride. One time I stopped and gave him one. But then when I got to the grocery store where I was going he says "hey man can you give me a little loan pay it back I promise" and I'm like "bitch you stopped me for that?" And I had to take him grocery shopping because he wanted a ride back too. Got some wierd looks. Anyways, I never gave him money but he was happy to get pizza sometimes.

For my friend Brian's 25th birthday he managed to get a downtown gallery/art space and a bunch of his friends who were in bands (incl. me) to come by and play a show. We set up on the side of the room, I borrowed an amplifier and Wolgang & I did about a one hour set or so of noise, there were people running around with raw whole chickens on sticks and somebody had a bunch of toilet paper. In the middle of the room people had brought all sorts of old junk VCRs, computer parts, printers, telephone answering machines, etcetera to be destroyed with bats and hammers and feet at the climax of the show. Marco had brought a couple of his giant homemade puppets and there was a keg.

Anyway at one point during our set a homeless fellow wandered in and stood in front of my amp, grooving out (I don't know what to, it was horrible shit and no rhythm to it). Somebody started wrapping him in toilet paper while he did his sort of hippie dance moves and soon he was covered head to toe in it. I stopped paying attention after a while but I'm pretty sure he was still hanging around when Brian started telling people to break everything and asking to be set on fire.

Then Wolfgang yelled "LET THE FUCKING BEGIN" because that was what his t-shirt said and the cops busted Marco for dropping his pants and spraying beer onto his genitalia.

So that's the weirdest place I've ever seen a homeless person.

i've wasted my life

stevem (blueski), Monday, 22 December 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess stole my answer. At least none of them set shit on fire and covered themselves in toilet paper while "temporarily living" with me.

The hallways of my school. Though he might have been a parent. Actually seeing a parent in the halls would've been more odd so he was definitely a vagrant.

why are there so few homeless in the UK? this is a serious question. It perhaps could also be asked "why are there so many homeless in America" but I have a good idea of why this is so. I'm wondering what services are available for in indigent/how people keep from becoming indigent in the UK.
