ARRRRRGH?

I have a new apartment in the city that I like, I have a new job which pays 2x as much as my old one, I've got a girlfriend who is wonderful to me, and all the stupid junk that had me really worried the last two or three months has more or less faded away and disappeared. In fact, by all appearances everything is going swimmingly.

So why do I feel like utter shit and why can't I stop grinding my teeth?

TOMBOT, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

'cause you are a faggot

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you faggot

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny, your mother is saying dinner is ready.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

really? i thought she was saying that if i don't stop hitting her she'd call the cops

johnny fitz (johnny fitz), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she cooked dinner IN YOUR ASS, JOHNNY.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure. How's traffic or the commute at your new place, Tom?

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Could be whatever old issues you still need to work on, that's dogging your happiness. (Course, you could just be feeling seriously moody, too)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you just haven't downshifted yet.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You feel like shit and you're grinding your teeth because you're going thru major life changes and you still haven't 100% gotten rid of ALL of the previous issues you allude to, you have to adjust and get used to things and you're not exactly a low-stress personality to begin with.

Also way to go posting serious queries on ILX, that's always productive, you faggot.

Allyzay, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'cause DC's kinda like that?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, that's good to know then. Back to faggotry.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i reckon its because now you actually have time to process the bad stuff. sort of after the event. this kind of happened to me, like so much crap going on, then housing and everything got sorted, and then like all the bad stuff caught up with me, and i felt down even though everything was good. its like, so this is it? it passes though

haha, x-post with ally

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It takes a while to relax and actually enjoy what you've acheived. In other words, almost everyone OTM.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally OTM, unsurprisingly. I'm pretty sure that given a couple of months to settle and get Christmas out of the way, you'll be sickeningly fine.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, you know, don't expect to be ecstatic at all times, just kind of numbly content. Obviously.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It is stressful starting a new job and getting a new apartment, etc. so even if nothing bad has happened it can still have an effect on you. Hope you feel better soon, Tom.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

also tom you've been
in the military way
for a long time, no?

it is no surprise
that to be out 'on your own'
is kinda freaky

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

typo acapulco (gcannon), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hey tom - Longbranch Saloon, say 9-ish on Dec 27th?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom is creative. And smart. And still has shit funcking up and is sensitive to shit around him and if we were all in a happy place what the hell would we be doing on ILX?

(shocker!)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Insert predictably-hippy comment about negative energies in the collective unconscious here.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

positively in aura my ass

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is Stevem talking like Dirty Yoda?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm reveal location of Nazi gold you will hmmm?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I almost forgot about this thread! Tuesday was for shit but I feel better now, I discovered a place to park my car near my house without getting ticketed (since I haven't been to the DMV yet and gotten my zone 1 permit which requires that I first register my car in DC which requires that I get an inspection and show confirmation that my insurance meets with their requirements and also I am supposed to get a DC license sometime soon which requires that I bring a copy of my lease, my social security card, my birth certificate and my old Alabama license) and I can now navigate to and from work without having to ride the train for 50 minutes and transfer 3 times.

Also I found a liquor store and a dry cleaners and a good diner and I can walk to nearly all the places I like to hang out from my neighborhood. Right now my major concern is the DMV.

Job is boring but now I am having to learn actual new useful stuff so it's looking up. Also soon I get paid and they let you buy an extra 40 hours of vacation as part of your benefits package!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The DMV will be ok! Haha I don't have much experience with the DC DMV but from what I heard from my coworkers who were transferred there, it's actually not sooooooooooo bad--I mean if you moved to NYC you'd probably go down there with a gun and blow them all away, it took me eight hours to get a state ID card. Could you fucking imagine if I decided to retake my tests and everything? I'd still be there! The DMV is just for shit, there's no getting around it.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

wait wait, 40 _hours_?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that we get 40 days off just for turning up, it just seems a strange way of saying "five days".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I enter my time by the hour, I am expected to do 40 hours of work per week. Therefore 40 hours of extra vacation = an extra week off, which I get as soon as they start deducting the cost from my paycheck. So I don't have to wait 6 months to get time off AND it's additional to the other two weeks I get off every year as per usual.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

OK why am I having to learn about UUCP commands? This is horseshit. Take your Bell 801 dialer and shove it up your ass, outdated courseware.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

quit complainin', rich guy

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so bad, think of the extra week off!

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, my auto insurance just went up $280 a year and I'm telling them I don't drive it to work!! Fuck this town! OTOH the dry cleaners just down the street does shirts for $.99? Small comfort I guess.

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have your own pad now, Tombot?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

$280¡¡¡¡¡ what are you driving and how many of them are left¿
wait. up by $280/yr - or up to$280¿

dyson (dyson), Friday, 12 December 2003 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He's got a hovercraft actually.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish. For my insurance I might as well be flying a helicopter around without a license, which would be much more enjoyable. it went UP $280 a year from what it was previously. I am not going to tell you what the total is because it's horrifying.

Mary: Yes, I got a rather large studio, two blocks from the 18th Street party scene and about 2.5 blocks from the Columbia Heights metro. It is swank, hardwood floors and a big kitchen and everything. My rent horrifies my peer group.

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Your rent is like nothing? I'm going to be paying more to live in Washington Heights/Harlem border??

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

my rent is like WHOA

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh all right. "Coworkers, friends and former colleagues not accustomed to downtown yuppiedom"

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, from the block.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to stevem, I have a mental image of Tombot doing a tapbreak.

No thanks to stevem, Tombot is doing said tap break in dance trunks.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No I'm serious! Your rent is like nothing! Do your friends have free houses???? I am moving to Columbia, Maryland if that is the case.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's simply that most of the people I know are not from NYC and are accustomed to only paying a quarter of their income or less on housing as opposed to half.

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I only pay $650 in rent right now.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha no-one from NYC is from NYC.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha that's untrue and unfunny at the same time.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I guess luke and I SHOULD have taken that 3 bedroom house for $2800 a month, that way I could open my mouth?

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost PANCAKES

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No, please, feel free to go on complaining endlessly about things that are ACTUALLY NOT BAD AT ALL, it's very pleasant for everyone!!

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no you DEEEINT!!

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you were from Long Island and Arizona, declared to be similar in their NewYorklessness by NYCers I asked (not native NYCers, of course)?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I get this a bit lately, mainly cos I am doing more paid writing than ever and getting stuff printed and yet I don't feel any sense of achievement.

I think though the thing to remember is that you can only operate on your own standard of happiness, just because alot of things you want fall into place doesn't mean you will automatically be pleased.

I think sometimes ambition is the cause of this, I often wonder and may have asked questions here about self fulfillment, and whether people reach a point when they feel satisfied with things they've done. Are you enjoying your job and stuff?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Oh noooo I have a high paying job and I live in a nice apartment in big urban area for less than $1000 a month and my car is awesome and I have a huge tattoo isn't my life te h suck I'm going to go slit my wriiiiiiiiiiisssssssts" BIG BABY. You're reminding me of...CRAIG! Why don't you go throw a chair through your office wall now!

xpost Andrew in assuming he knows about me shocker. I'm not from Long Island, wtf?

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OK I'm actually actively getting pissed off, time to turn off the internet and go back to dealing with dickwads and trying to figure out loan documents.

Allyzay, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not the source of that information!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to apologize to everyone for starting this thread as there are people my age dying of AIDS and malnutrition throughout the world.

TOMBOT, Friday, 12 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No hang on, how could I be? Anyway, sorry, and good to hear that after Dublin I can live anywhere in the US without a flinch.

xpost - they'd have died by now, surely?
