This is the best movie ever! I searched for a thread specifically about it but couldn't find one. There is absolutely no imperfections in this film though, I defy you to say otherwise.

Allyzay, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Also:

You remind me of the babe! What babe? The babe with the power! What power? Power of VOODOO! Who do? You do! Do what? Remind me of the babe!

Allyzay, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Chilly down with the fire dance, I tell you.

GEEK TRIVIA! Gates McFadden from Star Trek: The Next Generation was the choreographer for the dance sequences throughout.

Great film indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

a much better collabo with Lucasfilm & Jim Henson than "Dark Crystal" was...

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There I disagree with you. Both films are astonishing in my eyes, in different ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This is not a thread about the Dark Crystal, focus people focus.

Seriously though, that dog that rides around on the other dog makes me think of Ronan for some reason.

Allyzay, Friday, 5 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not a dog, it's a fox! (Like Ronan, obviously).

Tights, and the subsequent regular sightings of Bowie's Major Tom - C/D?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the farting swamp the ultimate in body humor, Muppet-style?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the helping hands.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

And that little worm-thing at the beginning is the most benign creature in the whole movie.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the farting swamp the ultimate in body humor, Muppet-style?

if it wasn't, the "SMELLLLLL BAAAAAAAAD" judgements certainly cemented it

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw david bowie last week and kept waiting for him to go offstage and put on his lycra tights and wig.

and was doing the 'who's got the babe? what babe?' thing to my boyfriend, who thought i was just making it up!

and he calls ME crazy.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my favourite bits is the little worm thing, and the fact that he wears his own little scarf.

http://labyrinth.8m.com/worm1.jpg

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't a young Jennifer Connelly in this?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so young, depennding on the angle...

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure is. First leading role!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. It's a great movie, I haven't seen it a long time; perhaps tonight is the night to rent it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The DVD is v. nice, has a BBC documentary from 1986 that's worth the watching.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it? Maybe I'm better off buying it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I did and I am happy. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Within You".

willem (willem), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've watched it thrice this week! It's so farking perfect.

I can't believe I've loved this film for so long and only this week noticed that it was written-for-the-screen by Terry Jones. It all makes sense now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, that connection was one of the best selling points for me when it first came out!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I must watch this again, I forget the dog.

Bowie is kind of creepy.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and once again, IMDB comes thru with the interesting bits

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Friday, 5 December 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Labrynth = Wizard of Oz made really f**ked up and creepy, and with the wizard/witch amalgamated into one.

Hoggle is the Scarecrow, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that shot of Sarah's room in the beginning that pans across all the images & books (one of which = Wizard of Oz of course) that totally foreshadows everything that happens in the film.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Much better than 'The Man Who Fell to Earth'.

En-Ri-Q (Enrique), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh the Wizard of Oz wasn't fucked up and creepy enough to begin with?!

Allyzay, Friday, 5 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

2nd Oz movie = deeply traumatic

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that WAS f**ked up.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have nightmares about the wheelers. When my son put socks on his hands and feet and rolled around the kitchen all like "where's the CHICKEN!?!" it seriously freaked me out, and I realize now that, except in the case of large dogs, that boy has nerves of steel.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The things that took their heads off in Labyrinth freaked me out when I was young too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my favorite movies -- my copy of the DVD didn't have anything on it except the movie, though! I let the ex keep it, so now I guess I'll buy the new(er) version.

The videos from it were pretty cool, too. "Underground" and ... "As the World Falls Down," it must've been. You really can't get too much of Bowie and puppets. He should've hosted D.C. Follies, elf leather and all, instead of Fred Willard. (Instead of Fred Willard hosting it, I mean. I doubt Bowie has ever hosted Fred Willard.)

The Gaiman/McKean movie Mirror Mask is intended to be very Labyrinth-like (people keep mistakenly calling it a Labyrinth sequel), and apparently they uncovered a lot of the props from the movie while making theirs.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved the head-popping Fieries (however you spell it) cause they freaked my little brother out :)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I also love the bird sitting on the old man's head...

it is so stimulating being your hat

luna (luna.c), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh and the false alarms "aww, please, it's been such a long time..."

luna (luna.c), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"It is so stimulating being your hat" was like this running-joke between me and my ex for years, to the extent that a running joke can be just quoting the line at random in grocery stores and airports.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It still is with me and one of my friends.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That really is one of the great lines of movies, the more I think about it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i have been known to repeat, "CHARLEY BEAR! yeah, you need Charley bear!" to myself for no real reason...

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I've found I don't watch Labyrinth thinking how 80s it is, which is weird, cause it ... is.

It's also a very different thing watching it with kids, cause they laugh at different stuff.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Lukas laughed his ass off when Bowie kicked that one goblin muppet. I thought he was gonna collapse a lung!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

See? And like at the end when it gets all Eschery (and dramatic and whatnot), the kids would be all, "The stairs are on the ceiling! They need an architect!"

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate to correct the Ned, but Jennifer Connelly's first leading role was in Dario Argento's Phenomena.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 6 December 2003 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is an excerpt from a review of Requiem for a Dream, which hilariously references Labyrinth:

I have talked to young cinemafiles from across the nation of america, and I have learned that there are many young men out there who get a hard on for this gal Jennifer Connelly. She was in the labyrinth movie with David Bowie and some puppets, apparently. Not sure what that whole fetish is about but then it is not my place to say. I am merely an observer in all this. And what I have observed, is something going up Jennifer Connelly's ass in this movie. I won't go into details but believe me people, this is not going to help you with your crush. This was a brave scene for her to do, a disturbing and humiliating one and I almost think the poor gal was being exploited because this is not something she can ever take back. I don't care if it's even a body double. If they ever make a Labyrinth 2, you're going to keep remembering what happened to the poor girl in this movie. And you're going to imagine you see a sadness in the puppet's eyes. And you won't be able to shake it.

They know. The puppets know.

I mean, this is a sad fucking movie. Many of you will probaly never masturbate again.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 6 December 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate to correct the Ned, but Jennifer Connelly's first leading role was in Dario Argento's Phenomena.

Hey, you're right! I stand corrected.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ASS TO ASS

ModJ (ModJ), Saturday, 6 December 2003 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I'm watching this right now. "Magic Dance" is still pretty much the greatest song ever. Why doesn't Bowie do more absolute ludicrious crap like this? Oh wait.

Allyzay, Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Chilly down.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

did they ever acknowledge that this movie is totally ripped off from

Alfred, this is extremely upsetting news.

Indeed, but we all have our flaws.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:41 (thirteen years ago)

Alfred, I would've married you, but I require my husbands to be able to quote at will from three movies -- All About Eve, JFK and Labyrinth. So close.

What the hell is Krull?

frank o'sin (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:44 (thirteen years ago)

btw Eric, your "what question" response yesterday did not go unappreciated. Just saying.

frank o'sin (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

What the hell is Krull?

A weird fucking mess, but a watchable one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krull_%28film%29

First time I ever saw Liam Neeson, Freddie Jones and Francesca Annis onscreen, though, as well as saw a film directed by near-ultimate journeyman Peter Yates:

RIP Peter Yates, who directed at least one film you love if not a number of them

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

I fear that if I'm only getting around to Krull now, it'll be the same "too late" thing that led to Alfred's current transgression.

frank o'sin (Eric H.), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

I have never watched Krull either -- I tended to shy away from action movies in the eighties unless there were puppets involved.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

Okay, it so happens that Krull is on cable right now -- what is this movie I can't even.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yes precisely.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

The lead guy is so melodramatic and fey -- I like that he was dramatically skipping off to fight in the action scenes.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

There is a reason why it's on in the background of this scene:

You have no soul, it was replaced with hate and clovers.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 21:14 (twelve years ago)

I would like to point out that the entire colloquy of "you remind me of a babe. what babe? the babe with the power..." was directly copied from The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer starring Cary Grant.

Soundtrack is the best.
My husband once made me a flipbook of the bit where Bowie walks upside down in the Escher bit then rotates over to the right way up. Also his sister went to school with Toby.

kinder, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 23:29 (twelve years ago)

Alfred, the fact that you hate all movies is reason #1 I want you for a husband. No fights over movies.
