bus conversations full of pathos

not depressing so much as...

for example i once sat down on the 22 bus in chicago and an elderly gentleman began talking to me. unlike many people who speak to you on the bus he was not strange at all, just lonely perhaps. he talked about his life and his time in chicago. he had a wife waiting for him at home. he had lived in the city all his life but obviously hadn't been getting out much recently as he eventually realized he was on the wrong bus. i explained where he should get off to switch buses. he was very kind and we wished each other well as he got off and i think we were both being sincere and heartfelt. after he left a man just two seats over turned to me and said, "you're a nice man" which actually made me a bit uncomfortable, as if i had been talking with this other man purely out of compassion, as opposed to genuine interest.

i hope that man is doing ok.

the bus stop scene in "Ghost World" still makes me really sad.

Seattle buses have too many joyous and/or conspiracy theorist crazies to qualify anything here as bus ride pathos. In fact, bring a mini disc recorder on any typical bus going through downtown, and you can have enough rants and samples to supply Godspeed You Black Emperor! and side project bands with another decade of records.

The pathos here happens in the post offices.

I was preparing mail near closing time one Saturday afternoon around tax time, and this really really heavy couple down in the dumps were sitting in the corner there sorting out which forms they needed for their tax return fill-outs (two days before the deadline.) At one point, the man says really bummed, really slow, yet really loudly "OW MAN, CRACKED ANOTHER MOLAR, SUSAN. SECOND TIME THIS MONTH. THIS SUCKS." The conversation continued to revolve around both of them talking about how they've been cracking or losing their rotting teeth in the past year.

*shudder and sigh*
