It's how he said his name Raymond as a child.

pete s, Saturday, 6 December 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

or because a small tom cruise couldn't say 'raymond' properly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what it's like to be the rainmaker
I wonder what it's like to know that I make the rain
I'd store it in boxes with little yellow tags on everyone
And you can come see them when I'm... done, when I'm
Done

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rainman" was his younger brother's mishearing of the name "Raymond," I believe. I find that quite sweet, actually......even if it did feature a creepy Sc*ent*logist.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

rainman is my main man!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 6 December 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember seeing this on a marquee when it came out, and I think the "I" in "RAIN" was slanted somehow, and maybe the "N" in "MAN," too -- so I read it as "RAW MAW," which seemed like it would be this schlocky horror movie with the woman from Throw Momma From the Train with flesh like Freddy Krueger, terrorizing children.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 6 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The first marquee I can remember: MR. MOM -- which at 4 years old, I had a lot of trouble understanding.
