i just came across it in gavin lambert's book on lindsay anderson - it wz LA's inffectual stepfather's xtian name

anyway i guess it's become a quaint comedy name: it always seems unfair and arbitrary when that happens

We had one at school iirc, but actually thinking about it I think Cuthbert might've been his last name. So I guess that might not count at all.

Cuthbert C. would surely mishear the request and wonder why he is being asked to contribute to Frozen By Silence.

The Cuthbert House is the name of the house in South carolina where my great great great uncle General Rufus Saxton lived while leading the first black regiments of the civil war onto victory against the rebel hordes and it's also where he masterminded the port royal experiment.we named our son after him. but no, i've never known any cuthberts. i have a cousin named Trevose. i've never known another Trevose. and i had an aunt and uncle named Hermanegilda and hermanegildo. i've never known any more of those either.

My neighbour used to call me Cuthbert all the time when I was a kid, he'd say "Morning Cuthbert" and so I'd say "Hi old man"

Oh them were the days eh

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 7 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

No. I did know a Montague however, who of of course changed his name to Monty and remained cool.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

cuthbert is a cute name - it's the sort of thing you'd call a guinea pig or a rabbit... something fluffy in any case.
on a slightly different note, i have met two cecils, one pronounced in the proper english way and the other pronounced, somewhat ridiculously and americanly, as see-sill, though

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)
