i have just connected to the web via internet gateway woohah, culprit turned out to be a faulty nic, apparently. this is just a peer to peer connection with a dial up on one computer only.

so now i move on to phase 2 which will be firewall configuration & security with the shares i want to do

but ok here's my question, is this possible??? i want to be able to run opera from either computer, and have things like emails and cache be the same for both computers. can i somehow synchronize the appropriate folders so this will work?

i have tried running the opera installation on the server from the other computer - i can bring up the program, but the mail, cache, settings etc are not there, which i would think might have to do with paths within the program configurations being off cuz it's on the other computer.

any hot networking sites i should check out? i really don't know much at this point

you could set one computer up as an IMAP server and have it collect email automatically from your accounts then both machines will just connect as a client and synchronise as necessary.

Ed were you recommending DABS to get a broadband/cable router from? Are the Linksys ones good or bad? They cost £80 in bloody Maplins and £50-70 in PC World, puh

I've found linksys gear to be easily configured and quite reliable. It's a bit pricey but then again a router isn't going to be cheap anywhere you look.

Depends what you call cheap. They often come in under USD$100.

so is it possible to have two folders, on two separate computers, which stay synchronized? enabling offline folders doesn't quite work how i want it to - they seem to be in their own location, i.e. i don't think you can move an offline folder around within your file system. it is just a cached version of the share (??)

also any suggestions on this imap business, it seems more common on linux and here i am on win xp. i am checking out a prog now called mailtraq

actually you know what i realized this is a dumb idea anyway. i just set the other program to leave the messages on the server, so that should solve my problem. that, and just trying to use the browser more on the server comp.

i can't seem to download files to a network drive though, what's up with that. i have full control permissions for "Everyone"
