This just came up at my editor's b'day lunch: the question of a girl's ordinary boydar (©Suzy Corrigan), and how INCREDIBLY POORLY TUNED THEY ALL ARE!!! No he is *not* sexy he is a lying cheating mean self-absorbed b'stard etc. That's not a radar, it's a use-me-as-a-doormat-dar, don;t come whining to me when he gets yr best friend's daughter pregnant.

(no one on the twin blotch need feel under scrutiny in the xy role)

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He isn't. Even Eddie Vedder's ahead of Hutchence in the 90's rockstar sexy stakes.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this a "Why do women fancy bastards?" question? Or even worse a "Why do women fancy bastards instead of wuvly me?" question?? ;)

Tom, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

clearly, it was the hair, those dark ringlets. especially when it concealed much of his face. file under: why women found (find, even! he's still having children!) mick jagger attractive.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was the kinky thing. Women LUV kinky bastards. Obviously.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you EVAH EVAH EVAH EVAH EVAH EVAH say anything remotely nice about Eddie Vedder again, that goes for EVERYBODY dammit

dave q, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh! It appears Mr. Q is a closet Vedder-lover!

Tim, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Women do fancy me Tom: they just don't TELL me. True story, after [z] fell out with me then made up v.v.v. apologetically a month later (= bought me a pizza into the bargain), then got v.drunk v.quickly at an office party a few days later, she said: "All the nightrs we were wroking late together [= scores, over three years], if you'd ever just winked at me I'd have slept with you.": She has a husband of ten years and two kids. And is also exceptionally sensible, level-headed, unflighty, organised etc etc.

Yes of course this is a why d'you fancy bastards (who are also cretins) thread: feel free to ignore specifric m.hutchence aspect

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(jeez: typo overdrive = repression mechanism in max effect surely??)

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, Mark S-for-Stud! My question incidentally wasn't meant to imply anything else, honestXoR!

Tom, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have asked myself the same question re: Michael Hutchence

I think you have to watch Dogs In Space to really understand it - there was something about him (although I preferred the truant schoolgirl).

toraneko, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so did i toraneko: a film i very much loved when i last saw it, but even then the thread question went wildly a-begging

Is the truant girl the junkie who dies (I think not but forget)? My M.Hutchence equiv is falling hard for the junXoR-dogged: bang, like that. It must be a sallow skin thing.

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, the truant girl was just the girl who hung out there a bit and sat on the front steps and stuff. She was my idol. I couldn't like the junkie-that-died one because she chucked up after shooting up and I'm totally emetophobic.

There were some amazing songs in that movie. Especially Shivers sung by a female of some sort. I'd love to get ahold of the soundtrack (for free in MP3 format, that is).

toraneko, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, he wasn't that bad looking, and did have nice hair.

Sean, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark - are men automatically bastards if they sleep w/ their married work colleagues? Particularly if/when said married work colleague makes the first move? I sort've have a personal interest in this question, but can say no more...

Andrew L, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He was ANOSMIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 But, sadly, not sexy.

1 1 2 3 5, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he was attractive in that freshly strangled kind of way.

Geoff, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing is automatic andrew: as for [z], we are still grate friends though she lives far, but this is also becoz nothing happened, so no one can blame anyone for bastardry in any direction. Paranoid interp'n = the come-on was twisty subconscious get-out clause as she was one of the co-workers exposed to BIG LIE mentioned on recent thread: she wanted to believe the lie as it was emotionally more convenient (since liar = v.bonkers but also v.charming: everyone's favourite tomboy daughter) but actually didn't as it really really REALLY wasn't who and how I was (I am evil in many ways but not that). If I had responded to [z]'s come- on positively, then easier for her to believe the lie, since mark s halo sullied (even if sullied by on-the-side fun in bed — por wherever — w.[z]).

Why am I not writing an Iris Murdoch novel?

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark - are men automatically bastards if they sleep w/ their married work colleagues?

no, i don't blame third parties

gareth, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is most strange. Last night I dreamt of hearing a tape of mark s. candidly discussing an office affair he'd once had with a married colleague. It was broadcast (unbeknown to him) on the BBC World Service. I was a bit thrown by the accent though mark, v. high Oxbridge.

stevo, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haw haw, what?

mark s, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he was lean, pouty, famous , a rocker, and had nice hair. The formula for adoration

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Forgot to say 'Dogs In Space' is one of the few films that makes me cry. A gem.
