Write Ewing's Brit Teen Flick

On the RUGBY thread Ewing told of a jukeboz-smashing incident and was advised to write it into his BRITISH TEEN FLICK.

I now want you to write or sketch some other scenes for EWING'S BRIT TEEN FLICK.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Boy waits for date outside Woolworths for two hours - she never turns up so he goes for a big bender in Wimpy - alone. music playing = where the birds don't fly by Suede

chris (chris), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That happened to me when I was seven. Though the bender was a lime milkshake.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't help because I'm writing my own Brit Teen Flick called -- and this is copyright -- 'Boys Who Make Tapes'. Yeah! It'll be like 'High Fidelity' meets 'Lolita' meets 'Bring it On'.

Wimpy? Did they still exist circa 'Suede'? The budget for anything based on Suede's 'Stay Together' would price you out of UK production.

Plus this would cause me emotional pain.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There's still a Wimpy in Lewisham! And one in Greenwich. And one in West London somewhere.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wimpy have been going since the 50s dude! and still are going (except they're disappearing fast. I just thought that it should be set some time in the early 90's though, possibly earlier though, in which case the lotus eaters "wishing I had a picture of you" or whatever it's called should be playing

I'm now startingto think about this seriously

chris (chris), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a wimpy on the road to wicklow, it looks desolate and lonely. I'm not sure it's ever open.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been thinking about it since I was a teenager ( =2000)

Wimpy in Cambridge became BK in about 1990 and I figured that had happened to all of them. Maybe I saw one in Aylesbury earlier this year though...

It's got such potential. I love US teen flicks, but most of them are a little remote from UK experience (cf Kirsten's courting of Indie Guy in 'Bring it On').

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Wimpy in the funfair on the seafront near me. It's part of the amusement arcade.

U&K - BTF must include scene in amusement arcade. Especially if film is set in dull seaside town.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There are 300 Wimpys in the UK, and the company wants to open another 40, according to our work property database thing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There are still Wimpys in Holborn and Brixton as well. What I want to know is if there are any Dr Beak's still extant.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

A shot-for-shot remake of Party Party is surely all that's required.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dateline: 'Britain 1988 -- "The Summer of Love"'
Soundtrack: Morrissey 'Every Day is Like Sunday'

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A date involving Dance Dance Revolution = urgent and key AS WELL AS Ricardo's point concerning Dr. Beaks.

It will have to be set in Sunny Guildford, surely?

Nice idea, the twangfox!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Even more U&K - film must NOT contain plucky Northern community all sad because pits have closed who all pull together through huge creative community project and then all get to travel to London in the final scene.

It needs to be set between 1992 and 1995. In a dull seaside town, and in the second half a medium-sized student town. With a teenage first dissipation scene outside Patel's Supermarket involving White Lightning and a doomed fumble with local girl played by Janine off Eastenders.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like the idea of it 'climaxing' at Ride's big gig in Slough whenver that was. Or maybe it could start there. Perhaps it all collapses with the success of Kula Shaker's 'Tattva'?

Mine would have a feel-bad moment set to 'The Day We Caught the Train'.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Only deviation from the Party Party plot -

Film opens with NME inspired teenagers chattering excitedly forthcoming Ride epic 'Leave Them All Behind' and ends anti-climatically with the the song gettting its first airing as we fade to the end credits.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to that - also on bill = curve, thousand yard stare and Chapterhouse (among others)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Glory days.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

IMDB doesn't have much juice on 'Party Party' -- what's it like?

Perhaps it cd be done in the style of a spaghetti western, with each character (Rugger Bugger; Indie Boy; Strangely Unobtainable Girl; Posh Raver) having their own theme, based o na popular musical style.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Intro to 'Leave Them All Behind' = not bad?

I was 12 when it came out -- all the cool kids dug them.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Intro to Leave Them All Behind = grebt, singy bit = shit, end bit = grebt

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

is anyone else starting to feel really old right now?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

In a twist on the 'awkward first kiss' cliché, the male protagonist attempts anal sex on his first date, to a soundtrack of Suede's Amyl Nitrate*. Lenny Kravitz loving girl is unimpressed.

* DVD features alternate take with 'The Size Of A Cow' in its place

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

In Suede style, N, we don't know if recipient is a boy or a girl of course.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Indieboy protagonist's father, who appears in one scene only, is played by David Gedge in a cameo role.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

This is going to be hott, for real. Built-in audience. Fuck.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel really old. Sigh. Actual teenagers wouldn't get ANY of these references.

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Party Party is either a priceless historical document of the charmingly unsophistication of early 80s youth culture, or a completely appalling pig's ear of an attempt at making a British Porky's.

It also features early appearances from every sitcom star of the 80s and 90s. And that tall bloke from Casualty.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure Kate, but they don't need to -- the audience is older than that. I feel old and I'm 23. But this film wd rock. I dunno how it could be updated. Like, younger ppl just listen to corporate pabulum, maaan.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

N., I believe you're thinking of Pantomime Horse.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Our hero's trusty sidekick and comically mismatched university room mate is a hyperactive glowstick wielding Irish raver. Based on no one in particular.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Just make the film about me and graham and be done with it!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be an amazing movie. But who would be the girl that both of you fight to win the love of?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What of The Girl He Left Behind? (Yes we're assuming a male lead.) I think she starts taking ecstasy. I think the room-mate, though is into undie-rap. His coolness and TGHLB's coolness calls into question whether he should buy that November's Wedding Present 45.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

there should be a scene involving dragging a gurl into either Forbidden Planet or Games Workshop with attendant grotesque charicatures for comic relief and that

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know Pantomime Horse but I assumed that Amyl Nitrate's title had something to do with said drug's use in bum sex. Pantomime Horse sounds a laugh though - feel free to substitute.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Contemporary reference = the entire film is a lengthy flashback and indieboy, now all grown up, is BLOGGING his teenage years.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOO!!!!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be horrific.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

at the end he is linked from blissblog, reynolds played by gene wilder

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan ist eine GENIUS!

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Just when you think a thread could get no better!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we get Bill Murray in there too somewhere? As Gedge?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No! Gedge must make an actual appearance, either as himself or playing someone else.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

He is indieboys DAD have you not been reading the thread?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan -- I just lost ALL my shit, you are a genius. Gedge will appear as the dad, and someone else will play Gedge, of course. Pomo!

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was about the free exchange of ideas!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, the song you're namechecking is called Animal Nitrate and is probably just as relevant. But Pantomime Horse has a chorus that repeats the phrase "have you ever tried it that way?", and I always made that particular connection.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My Suede nonfan-ness is cruelly exposed!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(cruelly? you shd be grateful N)

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Et tu, Ricardo?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't "The Drowners" about bum sex as well?

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, about Justine Frischmann. All the songs on the first album were about her. Apparently the songs are straight, but with her gender changed to male to obscure her identity.

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't disillusion C-lum! He thinks the songs are for him.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mandee was thinking of Take Me Up The Arse (Not Really Mum) - the German import B-side.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You dirty bleeders! Look what you've done to the Pinefox's thread!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, yeah - back to the storyboard.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm warming to the idea of 'Tom Ewing's Samurai Flick' now...

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm warming to the undie-hip-hop white guy. If this is early 90s then I suppose he likes Arrested Development and 'Low End Theory'. He'll be a stand-in for the Wise Black Guy of 80s Hollywood.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.rocksbackpages.com/furniture/writers/reynolds.jpg

Gene Wilder (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(stevem did ask -- but anyway SR mo' or less looks like moi till I get my hair cut)

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just meant I didn't imagine he looked like that.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Crikey - he's a Mark Lamar-Jel cross breed.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

With a splash of Jess Harvell.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

To clarify, the pic was of Simon Reynolds NOT Gene Wilder.

Enrique Reynolds (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, I actually did imagine SR looking a bit like Gene Wilder.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagined SR would look a bit like Gene Tierney.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I was disappointed he didn't look more 'rave' you know? Like one of the pix of the Prodigy on the 'Experience' CD sleeve.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but in a slightly bad 'slip your uncle an E in his tea' way.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell is there a law that everyone in NYC has to have the same specs now?

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Picture is undated. Either he's unusually youthful-looking (he's about 40, right?) or I've aged badly.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Or he has found the rock-crit elixir of youth.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The cult of koritfw.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Reynolds could be, like, twelve for all I care, what matters is he's still being played by Gene Wilder.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you have it Nicole.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

His hair used to be longer and a bit wavy -- Nicole, doncha remember those MM singles review columns that had photos of the reviewers starting in 1993 or so? That's where I first saw what he looked like. No specs then either, at least worn for that photo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom's Brit Teen Flick shld be a cross between 'That Summer' (1979) w/ Ray Winstone and 'Notting Hill'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have not actually posted to this thread till now.

Perhaps I am thus allowed to say I am stunned at how good it has at times been.

the teenfox, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You're proper inspiration, Pinefox.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a shame that my intervention gives the impression of having halted the thread in its tracks.

I am still interested in scenes from EWING'S BRIT TEEN FLICK.

I suppose I just like his original Smiths / rugby one so much.

the pinefox, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a current picture of Simon. Or at least he still looks exactly like that. We tied him down and stapled gunned the glasses to his face at the last FAP, actually.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon used to look A LOT like Michael Stipe circa Fables of the Reconstruction, with the cocker spaniel bob and all that.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately the closest post on this thread to my real actual teen years is Alan's Games Workshop one. Without the girl.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

post it to the excelsior thread! i was thinking like in wargames where broderick drags dabney along to the computer office where his hardcore hacker friends work

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)
