I was inculcated to love the former.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Saravah!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(i.e. I don't even know who the first guy is, but the second guy contributed one of my favorite songs ever to the 'Man and a Woman' soundtrack).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the second guy is named after the first guy, however (not that that proves anything).

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Can jpegs be animated? I'd swear the shadowy bits underneath LBP's hat keep sparkling.

Spadge (Spadge), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't the original Baden Powell boff young boys or is that just a scurrilous rumour?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry sorry, ignore my post, worked out what it was. Move along, nothing to see here.

Spadge (Spadge), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dunno about young boy boffing, but my Guide Handbook says that the original Baden Powell's wife Olave Soames "was born on February 22, 1889, the same day the man she was later to marry celebrated his 32nd birthday." at the time we thought this wasn't really a fact they should be hyping up, but now it all makes sense! how better to "Be Prepared" than by marrying an old rich guy who can play piano with his toes. Hurrah for Guiding!!

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

did they get married on his 32nd birthday?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That would make the story way better!! unfortunately not, our young lovers of varying ages meet in 1912, where sir impresses by remembering miss walking her dog in London some time previous. Supposedly this was a display of his mad observational skillz, but I bet he was just a stalker.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

but at least he was a trained stalker.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he did like the boys,

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I wish I could find my f-ing copies of the Boy Scout Handbook...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Eagle Scout that is me doesn't regret the past (I do regret the homophobic fucks in charge, though).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here. And i learned proper lashings. I've forgotten how to whip the ends of hemp rope tho...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Scouting isn't or wasn't all bad, I'd agree. I was a cub scout, but a fairly apathetic one.

There were some interesting things about scouting in Rites of Passage, that history of adolescence in the U.S. that I read recently (though not interesting enough that I can remember anything clearly now).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i JUST realized there were two of these guys this week

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a copy of scouting for boys from 1942, the personal hygeine section is pure comedy gold.

"nighttime beastliness"

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw a biography (in french) of the scouting guy, looked at the cover, and said, gee this doesn't look like the brazlian guitarist.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's where he got his name from! I always thought Baden Powell was a bit odd name for a Brazilian.

Scouts '91-'94 = The Shining Path

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Chris I've seen a similar book.

"A scout who swears should be treated harshly but fairly, a simple cup of water down each sleeve should suffice"

I was a Scout!! It was good fun, it really was. Over here at least the scouty stuff is kind of ditched, apart from the uniform, sadly. All the hiking, rowing etc I did was really fun and the last thing that kept me fit. I really should go back. It was a very good experience going camping and having to tell homesick kids what to do.

I quickly discovered motivational techniques which were effective. My favourite was when they had to wash up some manky pot and I'd say "whoever does it now won't have to do it tomorrow" thus creating a row about who actually wanted to do it.

Hiking was also fun, there was always some scout who had idiot parents and came wearing paper shoes and a t-shirt or something, with a walkman. I remember having to drag/carry/push one poor fucker who broke his ankle on some mountain. His parents were very praising of me though.

Actually that was the other thing, dealing with the parents was completely weird. Some were even more weird than the kids. Scouts had plenty normal kids but naturally some really odd problem children, it was sad. I remember one of them crying every night with a photo of his parents cos they had told him they were getting separated the night before we went away! What assholes, he then didn't want to leave and insisted on piggybacks every ten minutes, bless him.

Yeah it was great.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Check the link! It's being re-pub'd in March.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Os Afro-sambas is one of the most beautiful albums ever. The original one, that is.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was looking at his big staff THANK YOU.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I stopped advancing after Star when I realized that I didn't need a higher rank to be a partol leader.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You didn't get that Spelling merit badge, I see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The partol leader gets to beat up the younger scouts.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

MEAN

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Cubs = Cool

Scouts = Scum

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

About seventeen years ago when in Brownies, I was leader of the Fairies = the group with the best song evah. "We're the Fairies glad and gay, helping others every day!" Unfortunately, the lyrics have since been changed.
