Australians - classic or dud?

There are about a dozen of them living in a bedsit upstairs from me. They're very friendly. Last night I saw one of them sitting on the stairs in his underpants drinking beer. Is this normal behaviour in Australia?

and white people drive like this

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're the real Karl Popper, then explain for me the philosophy of science!

Kate 22 (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Just for John Howard's face throughout the award presentation ceremony at the end of the RWC final - CLASSIC. My favourite bit - handing the Webb Ellis trophy to Martin Johnson. The proverbial bull-dog chewing a wasp. Sweet.

pete s, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

Umm... it's all about the falsifiability of scientific theories... or something like that. Look, it was a long time ago and I've moved on since then, all right?

Karl Popper, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Your statement cannot be verified or disproved and is therefore meaningless. Next thread!

Kate 22 (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, I think you may be setting yourself up for a massive spontaneous existence failure with comments like that :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

::poof::

SPONTANEOUS EXISTENCE FAILURE!!! (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Australians do drink beer in their underwear. Sometimes we don't even bother with the underwear. And we are classic, in moderation.

Australia is Canada's drunken cousin.

Octothorpe (Octothorpe), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

'celebrating 50 years of electricity'

'and 10 years of colour television'

What parts of Australia are you talking about there, fellas? Surely even outback Queensland, wilderness Tasmania (and maybe even parts of Perth and Adelaide) have had color TV for at least 20 years.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say that it's Canada with skin cancer. Classic.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce, you mentioned one thing that is definitely NOT classic about Australia.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, yeah I realise this ;)

Wait - I dont drink beer... does that mean I'm not Australian?

OMG I think I see a van from the Immigration dept outside.... theyre coming up the drive... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggg

[NO CARRIER]

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo, your study of CD (and indeed Paul Hogan) movies can stop right there and you miss nothing. The first one was classic, the second and all subsequent are complete scheit.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

my basic understanding of australia has been cobbled together from fosters commercials, simpsons gags, and a bizarre, potentially internally ivented, notion that your women are more attractive.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

They are, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ahahaha

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and yes the women are more attractive

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

my understanding of australia has come from listening to the 1st pseudo-echo cd (and reading the pseudo-echo thread). well, maybe to INXS and young einstein as well. you can learn a lot about a country from its crap culture (i.e., i learned everything i need to know about new zealand from MiSex).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

'my basic understanding of australia has been cobbled together from fosters commercials, simpsons gags, and a bizarre, potentially internally ivented, notion that your women are more attractive'

Oh dear.

(Though Neighbours doesn't figure, nor Kylie, does Bazza McKenzie, which is something I suppose. The bit about the women is sometimes OTM, with regional variations.)

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

...nor Kylie, NOR does Bazza...

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i am in love with a girl from sydney.
i look forward to my 1st visit there this march. from the people i've met from there - classic. although they are no more "drunks" than canada.
from what i've seen of their "leadership" - dud.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

and yes the women are more attractive

Er, what? More attractive compared to where?!

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 11 December 2003 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it's pretty bizarre to say that Australian women are more attractive than women from somewhere else considering we're essentially a nation of immigrants.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 11 December 2003 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my gf lives in australia, ergo the women are more attractive

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I do not eat Vegemite. I do not drink beer in my knickers.

Interesting, though, how I never felt Australian until I left the country.

Still, it does rock, rather.

Miss Marianna, Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, beer in knickers.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

After living in Sydney for a year and then returning to London, I've come to the conclusion that Australian girls aren't necessarily more attractive per se, they just take a little more care of themselves (or are more preoccupied with superficial image/body fascism-type stuff, depending on your POV) and - this is U&K - wear a lot fewer clothes most of the time due to it being flippin' hot. On coming home, I was still aware of loads of attractive people, the just happened to be buried under layers of clothing. Result: a draw.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Australian boys? Cuter than anywhere else?

I used to think - bleurgh.

But, yesterday - Jack on Neighbours in his bond singlet - PHWOAR!!

Miss Marianna, Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone knows Bond tees make everyone look hott!

I have a friend who has a theory that all Australian boys are secretly gay and macho it up to hide this fact, and that's why all the girls come to London to get Pom boyfriends. I'm not sure I agree, but that's mainly cos I don't want to get beaten up.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope this thread continues for a long time.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls from all around the world come to Britain for boyfriends. We roxor, yo.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

you should hear what else i like!

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well here are the facts, folks - three out of my four best mates (all Poms) have antipodean girlfriends, as do I. That's 80% non-Brit to 20% brit, in my immediate circle of buddies. I've not idea what that means - if indeed it means anything at all - but it's a pretty odd stat all the same.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea what that means either.
seriously.
what is this "antipodean" and can i eat it¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

antipodean = opposed to university principles working for free

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

NYTimes recently said that Canada is the new Australia.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

how many continents, let alone countries, can be said to be comprised of anything other tha "immigrants"?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

tha = than, of course

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i must have missed the part where i immigrated

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"tha immigrants" are australias answer to big brovaz

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

australian hip hop is like being dunked, whilst utterly alive and sober, in aqua regia. and twice as painful.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont know what that is. is it like the blue stuff barbers keep their combs in?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the stuff (aqua regis) useful for anything besides being an exterminant for bad hip-hop bands?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You can use it to dunk heavily tattooed Emo singers too. Oh, the pain!

I think we need to distinguish between Australians from the Melbournians.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

this is very true of where i live. i can sit on the beach for hours without seeing one attractive woman.
