Friday night Hammersmith pre-Basement Jaxx FAP?

As I'm sure at least four of you will be at the gig, fancy a pint first? Bearing in mind I know absolutely nothing about Ammersmiff pubs, so I'll stand aside to a greater authority on the venue itself.

Feel free to excitedly anticipate the gig itself here as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i mailed you Matt (graffiti address) as i have a favour to ask

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

as for the FAP, i suggest El Metro (it's a Spanish bar!) in Hammersmith H&C tube station, from 7.30pm - there's a pub by the Palais but i dont know if it's any good - suspect not

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Would be nice to meet up. We also have to find Toby's mate Dan and his girlfriend Nitisha because Tobes has their tickets. He's in some maths related lecture/ seminar thing at the moment,so I don't know what's going on.

(About anything, I mean, I could ask about the maths, but I wouldn't understan it)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I do NOT recommend EL Metro. The pub by the palais is GREBT! Firemen everywhere.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

note also it is the palais again, after enduring a year or so as PoNaNa. is this a strummer respeck thing?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i just need my Spanish bar fix...but the pub does sound better

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Alan where do you live in Shepherds Bush anyway? i used to be on Netherwood Road if you know it (just off SB Road, near The Richmond pub) - or are you more nick k's end?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Laurie Arms

Tho I am not going to the gig as the Jaxx are not all that, so feel free to ignore, but it'd be nice to drop by for the booze as I am having a boozy afternoon with work wobs lunch

I live nearer white city and work in Hammersmith, so the Laurie Arms is on the way home. sort of. plus the wobs xmas lunch place is on that road too.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

see you in there i think, Jaxx-hate embargo in full effect tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oh there's no hate - i love the one about the head, obv. there's always a band that everyone goes nuts for that ppl assume I'd like but i think are rarely any good. it happened last with the Chemical Brothers - pretty much everything except prvt psch reel i can take or leave

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

actually dan got asked yesterday to play a gig in tokyo on friday! so in fact it's nitasha and emma who i don't think you've met, anna.

also it's possible that some of my university friends may be drinking in town after work and if so i'd like to catch them so might not make this til gig-going time. but we'll see.

any ideas what time we need to be at the apollo?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm dropping by a party, at some spanish bar, around 8 so I'll be in the area...

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 11 December 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Toby this is urgent and key you need to be at the Palais and not the Apollo!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 December 2003 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima saw them at the Forum last night but i have no idea how it was. he did ring to tell me but i couldnt hear him too well - i got the impression all was not well tho (!)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

duh. i'd've realised that when i looked at the tickets, i guess. any ideas on what time to get there, anyway? i think it's more likely i'll be in the pub earlier rather than later now, but it'd be good to have an idea...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So are we agreed on this Laurie Arms place then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but i will happily meet people who don't know where that pub is in El Metro beforehand (which is easier as it's in the H&C tube station thus easier to find).

If you're coming from the Picadilly/District stop tho, come out of the main entrance/exit and cross the road for the H&C tube station on the left. The Laurie Arms and the Palais are to the right down Shepherds Bush Road in any case.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

thinking it through (and yes I know I suggested it) but won't the pub next to the venue be brimming over. I've been to gigs at the palais a few times and don't recall a big crowd in the pub, but i was perhaps not concentrating on gathering such info at the time

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

all the bars nearby will be just as busy i figure. i would suggest that pub down Blythe Green but a bit hard to find i guess.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

U&K Public Service Announcement: If you want to see Shystie, get in around 8. If you wanna see the Jaxx on time, be there 50 mins after that. Otherwise, as I was saying on the other thread, you feel vaguely cheated (actually, Toby's previous Jaxx experience notwithstanding, people will generally be upset when the night ends an hour 35 mins before the advertised time). Of course, I'm coming because I have more bitterness than money.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, dare i ask about the setlist?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I got about 5 songs, only they were all blurred into one and the only recognisable one (bearing in mind I haven't heard the pre-Remedy hits and only bits and pieces of pre-pop stars BJ) was 'Where's Your Head At', which sounded no different to the album version! I keep thinking of the amazing Cornelius gig from last year and people saying he sucks live and getting a bit of the opposite with the Jaxx - no, I don't think it's a lost cause last night was too off.

I forgot the Palais was also once Hammersmith Po Na Na - I performed as a back-up dancer on stage once.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having a bit of trouble believing that they'd play an entire set with no new or recent stuff other than Where's Your Head At - are you sure you weren't just in a bad frame of mind from arriving late?

Either that or they just had some enormous hardware failure and lost all the programming work from the last album.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it was the final third of their show, but not ending with a well known/album track was nothin' short of bugging. I was trying to get into it tho', I assure you, man.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

so what time will ppl be at this laurie arms place?? i'm no longer going to piss about going into town, so i'll be up for coming along whenver people are there i suspect.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

prob meeting ppl in El Metro but will then go straight to Laurie Arms so should be in there around 7.45

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way I am never drinking again. I will no longer be Queen Of Ruin, take my crown.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 12 December 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm heading straight down from work, so could be there for sixish onwards. I'm going to the Laurie Arms to comandeer a table though, none of this Spanish Bar stuff that is so obsessing Steve.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll go straight to the pub as long as everyone knows how to get to it (barima? cis?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't look especially tricky to get to, to be honest.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

O, I dunno, that walk just down the Shepherds' Bush Road looks pretty complex and confusing to me.

Laurie Arms it is, then.

cis (cis), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt have you picked up thos tickets?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve I've emailed you about this its very important (in other words, there are no tickets).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

THERE IS NO STEVEM

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, check your mail.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I could make it to the pub, but I have to find out where my mate is celebrating his birthday tonight right now, sort out some home issues and stop wasting my time on the internet (I hate pre-travel uncertainty/unemployment). Stevem, keep your phone on.

At the very least, I hope you all concur with my setlist plan. Matt, do you really have no tickets?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt has his own ticket - at least i hope so - i'm starting to worry that he was counting on one of mine (say it aint so DC)

the two missing ones are for whoever doesn't win the rock-paper-scissors battle between barima, cis and guest X

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

'missing' = not collected yet, don't panic! I SAID STOP PANICKING! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHH!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

::Confused::

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(About everything, haha)

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

GET AHOLD OF YOURSELF MAN! YOU'RE HYSTERICAL!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, I have a ticket, and will be in the pub as soon as is humanly possible. Rah!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

...

what Barima said.

cis (cis), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

we will now not be in hammersmith until after 8 it seems (change of plan yet again, now going to meet ppl in town after all). i'm sure mobile phones will make it all ok though.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Food hasn't worked. Caffeine hasn't worked. Music doesn't work. Pro Plus failed back at A-Levels. Single and have no escort agency numbers. HOW CAN I BEAT THIS STUPOUR?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

go and see Swiss Clive down the market and he'll sort you out with some cheap speed

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

what about the being single problem?

do you reckon listening to house records feverishly and downloading music and going out getting wrecked will work?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

so far I have found this not to be the case

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is such a downer, yay!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

How long dfo I have before you disown me?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you are going to see the Jaxx! Be happy! I want text reports!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a phone that can text (really) or your number.

(Yeah, take that bait and let me forward it onto various pervert-friendly chatrooms)

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

haha steve has it, no pressure Steve, I was trying to raise spirits.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope they still do Miracles Keep On Playin

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Update: Idiot birthday boy's phone is playing up, so I still don't know what's happening with that. Have also decided not to reach Hammersmith before 8.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

off to get the tix now, see you in about 3 years, mwah

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hurrah! they were fantastic. except they ruined romeo. but fantastic, anyway.

sorry we lost you all - once we got out to the bar it was hard to get back again.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

wefoinefwohwfeohfweoihdfiohfwonfq;onadsoidqn

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like I was fucked simultaneously in about eight different orifices last night. With skewers.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that good or bad?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima - are you SURE you went to see the right band last night? I mean, it was awesome. Except for the Romeo/Magnificent Seven mashup, which was merely good when it could've been incredible.

Other good bits:

I think getting the female MC in to do Lucky Star was a good move - took it out of the realms of mere imitation and put a new spin on the song. And turning If I Ever Recover into a boy/girl duet was also cool - I think they really made the right decisions when taking it into the live environment.

Where's Your Head At - like the entire fucking venue was jumping!

That 4/4 Seven Nation Army/Like I Love You/In Da Club thing was amazing. What was the acidy early Jaxx track that it mutated into?

The bloke doing Plug It In was amazingly camp.

What were the two tunes I didn't recognise - one was a kind of scuzzy bass-led Laurent Garnier/Vitalic thing and the other one was like the first bit of Love Story with Simon doing raucous squally House of Jealous Lovers guitar feedback over the top.

Stand-in Siouxie Sioux Kish Kash latex-clad dominatrix = hottest woman ever.

The Egyptian ska house version of Living Room = incredible. Much better than the album version. And I'm still singing the 'nah nah nah nah nah' bit in my head.

And the way in which Jump And Shout finished the whole set with that utterly insane speedfreak toasting bit at the end.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What was also funny was the number of men pushing towards the front during Kish Kash.

The Hammersmith Palais is a shit venue though. Its too wide and the sound wasn't loud enough and you have to queue for hours to do ANYTHING. Boys - when come back, play Brixton Academy, okay?

I have never seen anything like that at a gig. Ever.

Steve - I have your DVDs, I'll bring em along to Monday's FAP. Sorry I didn't see you all afterwards but I was a mercenary cunt and subtlely pushed in near the front of the seven mile cloakroom queue and got out pretty quickly.

Also - MC Shystie = ROXOR.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hammersmith Palais is a shit venue though. Its too wide and the sound wasn't loud enough and you have to queue for hours to do ANYTHING. Boys - when come back, play Brixton Academy, okay?

i thought it was way better than brixton academy!! smaller, good views from the balcony, no bar queue during the gig, easy to get out at the end...

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 13 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(also they were better two years ago etc etc)

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 13 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

LOVE.

when come back, play Brixton Academy, okay?

What, you mean like they're doing on 19th March? (yay!)

cis (cis), Saturday, 13 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i think i will try and go to the Brixton do

'Magnificent Romeo' was fab - what-a-wrong-wit-u??

i was very happy they revived their 'Automatic' track, sampling the Pointer Sisters - one of their early b-sides

Matt DC otm about everything - esp. being a mercenary queue-jumping bastard, haha

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

They trashed Romeo, it lost all its bounce and joy and became this goopy plodding thing. Rest was dead good though. Much prefered the female MC to Dizzee, I hadn't liked that song until then. Sorry about leaving you all, I was firmly convinced I was going to pass out and I haven't done that since the Manic Street Preachers at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in 1993, and I don't really want to go back there.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a relaxed attitude to 'Romeo', it's worked well in many bootlegs (with The Clash, Supergrass and Chemical Brothers amongst others) imo - i appreciated that they were sort of responding to SOulwax by integrating their appropriation into THEIR set. 'Mag Seven' has a GREAT bassline so i can't see why this would never work - even if the original version remains the best overall.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely saw the right band on Friday ;) (that other band were, like, robot creations made by Dr Evil and sent to kill fun deader than dead, heh). Mind you, a friend of a friend said he enjoyed Wednesday, and I honestly didn't mean to get any of you even remotely worried - I was venting, really.

I liked the Jaxx performing nods to recent trends that have supposedly "passed" ie mashups and DFAism. I loved 'Living Room' live, though I thought it'd already been performed as a darker version earlier on (one of the two unknowns Matt mentioned - maybe the first)! I agree 'Romeo' was off the money. The rest was classic, esp. the new album stuff. No 'Rendez-Vu', the fools. Hell, I thought I'd die before getting to hear 'Plug It In'. The dude singing tried his best but afterwards, cis and I were like "JC Chasez MAKES 'Plug It In'." While standing in the rain and looking like tears were running down my face.

I thought the crowd would kill me anyway. I couldn't tell if Matt kept turning around to make sure were were still breathing or having fun.

Lisa Kekaula, what a legend! Feather Girl and Dominatrix Lass, what wonderful women! The female MC - sadly not Shystie for that thematic touch, but still damn brilliant. Was that THE Slarta John?

I think 'If I Ever Recover' is a boy-girl duet on the album.

And then I went out, got massively drunk, made ill-advised passes and passed out on birthday-bwoy's sofa for 2 apparently-disturbed hours.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

PS. I love you all, and if I can come back from Ghana for the 19th March aka my birthday weekend, I'm up for it.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yes it was really Slarta John. this also made me very happy - 'Jump n Shout' was probably the highlight. not too bothered about 'Plug It In' either way, enjoy the bleepy bits at the start more than the vocals really. was it not Shisty/Shystie MCing on 'Lucky Star' in more delicious ironing shockah?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

not dragging on Glamma Kid for a second encore of 'Fly Life' = crushing disappointment

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm amazed Matt saw anything on stage. Every time I looked over I'd see Matt bouncing up and down grinning at everyone.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, you could've seen me growling at the 100 punters who passed by me, I mean, crushing me to death (I don't know how to do that crossing out thingie - help!) going to or coming back from the bar.

Hammersmith Palasi >>> Kentish Town Forum in spite of sweat action and being 5000 times over capacity. It's all about the, uh, intimacy.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Slarta John = brick shithouse. The man had arms like treetrunks.

Barima - when are you off to Ghana? Not a permanent move, I hope.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, you could've seen me growling at the 100 punters who passed by me, I mean, crushing me to death (I don't know how to do that crossing out thingie - help!) going to or coming back from the bar.

Gotta give it up to live it up...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

enjoyment was hindered by annoying couples who think they can get further forward but then give up after stopping right in front of you (welcome to most gigs ever i guess). mind you the cute blonde girl's ass was teasingly bumping against my side half the time = biggest sexual thrill i received since...oh, the last Club FT night...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Matt, that mantra was so necessary. I would've forgiven them on a shallow level, but they were all ugly, so I decided to be a mean, disgruntled bastard instead :). For serious, though, it was a little much.

"Slarta John = brick shithouse. The man had arms like treetrunks."

No wonder he was dressed as Blade.

"Barima - when are you off to Ghana? Not a permanent move, I hope."

It's a confusing morass of uncertainty: I'm leaving with my family (who will be coming back after New Year) on Wednesday. I'm leaving on 3rd Jan (and spending X-Mas with an aunt, which wouldn't be bad at all). I have a job out there as set up by my dad for 4 - 6 months...but he needs my CV e-mailed to him and we haven't discussed the job (as in explicit details of what I'm supposed to be doing) for almost 2 months. To sum up: AAAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

Steve, I was so in there with the 2 girls I was next to for half the set, I was gonna let you meet them, promise.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

do they ever do 'samba magic' these days ?

piscesboy, Monday, 15 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

would seem not
