Xmas no 1 : Ozzy?

Bookmakers have slashed the odds of Ozzy Osbourne reaching Christmas number one following the star’s accident.

An outpouring of public sympathy for the crooked rock God – currently on a ventilator in a Slough hospital – has led William Hill to cut their odds from 50-1 to 16-1. They say they have been inundated with a "sudden flood of money" from punters backing ‘Changes’, the Black Sabbath track Ozzy has re-recorded with daughter Kelly.

However, the 12 Pop Idol finalists are still 1-3 favourites with their version of John Lennon’s ’Happy Xmas (War Is Over)’.The Darkness remain a 3/1 bet.

Umm, is there a flood of people actually buying it tho?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Mark. Could be the biggest shock number one of the year. Only just ahead of Will, though, so it depends on what goes on with the Saturday sales.

Kingfish Beefstick (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Kingfish Beefstick (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Darkness Xmas video is awesome. It has singing robots and a chick that looks mysteriously like Shannen Dohetery. And the Hawkins brothers play a double guitar.... together! It's excellent!

they are really plagued by that space octopus....

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the many things I like about the Darkness is that they obviously have some mate who draws their awful singles sleeves: a touching display of loyalty from the newly famous.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that Darkness single sleeve should have been the cover of the album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, on record covers.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone clarify something for me? As soon as I heard the title of the Darkness's Christmas single, I thought: "Ha ha - bell end joke." But I've not heard anyone mention this. Is it just because it's so obvious?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if it is a bell end joke, it's just not very funny, which is why it hasn't been mentioned.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But people are always mentioning unfunny things! Anyway, the humour in it surely derives not from clever wordplay, but from it being the kind of thing a gang of teenage boys would do ("ha ha - we got them to say 'bell end' on the radio, nearly"), rather than a group of grown men.
