If I knew what it was, I would comment intelligently.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I doubt that

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I could comment stupidly as well, whatever works. ;-)

SJ is a new Cartoon Network show from Powerpuff impresario Genndy Tartakovsky. it insists on airing at odd times that I can never remember. here's what one of the backgrounds looks like!! (hope it works)

(the above is a reflection on tip of SJ's blade, naturally)

I'm getting a cable upgrade next week and I hope to hell the Cartoon Network comes with it, because this looks like a total treat.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh it looks luvverly. Are the stories worth bothering with (or am I missing the point)?

Andrew L, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some episodes have only 2 minutes of dialogue.

in each episode jack finds himself on an entirely new planet with entirely different color palettes, with new problems to solve but the same old nemesis: "AKU" which i think means "evil" in Japanese. it's pure action.

Revive. A thought keeps popping into my head: that Samurai Jack is better television than we deserve. There are the occasional "so-so" episodes but more often it feels like telly that just wouldn't normally get commissioned. The story, the dialogue, the animation, pacing - it's all so alien to everything else on telly.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This show is really amazing, isn't it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only seen a couple of episodes because each one I see is so amazing that I think "this must be an abnormal episode and I can't risk tainting the good feeling I get from this by watching the regular episodes where SJ undoubtedly hangs out with children and teaches them life lessons."

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

that Samurai Jack is better television than we deserve

I'll go with that. Is there any word about the episodes starting to get a DVD release (besides that premiere one, which El Diablo kindly got as a housewarming gift for me)?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There has been plans in the works for years to split The Cartoon Network into two different stations: "Boomerang" and "Toonami"; Boomerang would be nothing but cheesy kids cartoons (most of them by Hanna Barbara, the kings of painfully crappy kids cartoons); and Toonami would be nothing but Anime and "grown up cartoons"
I've waited for four years for them to actually impliment this scheme, so I can gleefully block Boomerang and have Toonami on 24/7.
Sadly, this has not come to pass.

Season 1 about out on DVD. I am happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i love this show. never get to see it anymore, sadly. i love how static & patient it can be. and when it uses anime visual tics like repeating the same second of violence 234 times a row in slow mo it's fugue and not padding.

i'll have to rent it!

What the hell, did I NOT followup talking about how great the season 1 DVD set was? I must have been sick.

Okay, I'll get to that later but for now, some *long* overdue news:

"Look for the second season of Samurai Jack to come out on DVD in the Spring of 2005, along with episodes of Ed, Edd, N Eddy. The Venture Bros. are looking to hit DVD that Fall, along with plenty of other shows throughout 2005. This includes the third season of Samurai Jack, which will be released that winter."

"Samurai Jack theme song = best fake Neptunes evah.

I don't like that there Boomerang/Toonami idea, it is a FALSE BINARY! And really, I like having Bugs and Tom & Jerry next to Samurai Jack and Megas XLR and the Powerpuff Girls. Sure, there's plenty of old skool hanna-barbera crap that's just awful, but then the new guard also has some duds ("Ed, Edd & Eddy", "Cow & Chicken", "Johnny Bravo" for the most part.)

Damn I miss this programme. Best action cartoon series of all time? (There may well be one of those long-running manga things that's better, but all the ones I've watched any of just confuse me and give me a headache)

chap, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Glah can you imagine a Samurai Jack movie?? :/ Would be so good

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

SO so good.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pissed off you can't even get Region 2 DVDs as far as I've been able to discover.

chap, Monday, 14 January 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think there are any PAL versions of Samurai Jack available at all.

StanM, Friday, 3 October 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

I've only seen the first season and various other episodes on TV, but the standout to me, by far, is the episode where Jack faces off against the three blind archers in the tower. Simply outstanding, especially from a sound design perspective.

CN seriously only seems to play this show once a week now. ugh!

HPSCHD, Friday, 3 October 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

It really blows that they never gave this show a proper ending..

Nhex, Friday, 3 October 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe they won't anymore - Mako, the voice of Aku, died in 2006 ...

StanM, Saturday, 4 October 2008 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen about 40 episodes since this thread (12 to go) and the design (sound and image) is just... PHENOMENAL. Wow x 1000000

A lot falls on who they get to voice Aku but really excited for this. As of when the original serialization ended it was still going strong.

tsrobodo, Saturday, 5 December 2015 12:36 (nine years ago)

The final season was the best.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Saturday, 5 December 2015 13:30 (nine years ago)

Ooh that's tough, first and second have a lot of my favourite episodes iirc, would need to check to be sure

tsrobodo, Saturday, 5 December 2015 17:35 (nine years ago)

Earlier seasons have stellar episodes, but the fourth was consistently wonderfully assured and inventive.

Still have all four seasons on DVD; wish DVD players had changers, and a shuffle function, so I could load up all four and just play episodes at random.
