[WARNING - LEADS TO VIDEO CLIP OF ACTUAL DEATH.]

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

On the forum that I got this from people were making a big deal about the 2-3 seconds from the soldier's interview that were edited out, but is there really any doubt that he's still talking about the same event after the edit-point?

I also realize how stupid it is that the page says "NEWS YOU WON'T FIND ON CNN" while this footage is obviously from CNN.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ack! Seeing people get executed street-style always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Well not necessarily for police, but generally yes. Not that I can't handle it; I'm usually just not prepared. It takes at least two minutes to make popcorn.

Dancing Queen, Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

In all seriousness, it was quite sickening to watch.

Dancing Queen, Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, Damn, I'm really sorry! I didn't even think about potential offensiveness. Forgive me.
People that haven't seen the video yet look out! It shows (from a distance) a guy getting shot in the head. There's no gore, but it's clear that the shootee dies.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't disturbing in the stomach sense (though I can't speak for everyone); it was disturbing in the sense of realizing that they're giving guns to people who really can't do anything with them except begin treating their surroundings like playing DOOM.

Dancing Queen, Thursday, 11 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, my big phobia is seeing film of people dying. You sick fuck.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You didn't click on it, did you?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The mere fact I know about it really disturbs me. I don't like this feeling at all.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe someone should contact a mod to change the title of the thread!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like he said "Ooh look, cute kittens! (link)". (I do understand that phobias aren't rational.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I once had somewhat of a phobia of this, but watching Traces of Death videos scoured that part of me away with a steel wool scrubby.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

1. I don't think it's all that clear that he's talking about the same thing. The edit point could have been put there by anybody and it seems a little overwrought to be honest. There are a whole lot of things that he could be saying that about, it's a pretty generic comment in my opinion.

2. If you don't like having dumb young kids running around with loaded guns in a country rife with insurgent guerillas you're welcome to sign up yourself. Hell, they'll only stick you over there for 12 months with no vacation. You'll get a medal, too!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

that soldier looks like haley joel osment.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it is very true, as tom says, that we logically assume the follow on there, that he is talking abuot what just happened. of course, it is totally believable that he is, but that doesnt neccesarily make it so, it isnt clear at all, the jump cut in the middle doesnt help either

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, the news ribbon on the bottom is still on the same item after the edit as before. What kind of tangent could he have gone off on in that time? Do you suppose during the edit he was like "yeah so enough about the war, let me tell you about my first sexual experience!"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

And Tom, I don't see how it follows that if I don't like there being stupid American soldiers in Iraq the appropriate alternative is for me to go myself. Is it really that difficult to think of other possibilities?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That news ribbon is on the same item every 30 seconds.

Yeah, there's an alternative to everything, but calling out that troop for possibly being an amoral jackass with poor communication skills is a bit like saying the school janitor smells bad.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right. I shouldn't have expected them to be anything but amoral jackasses.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh fuck it. Have you ever gotten to hang out with the infantry? It's a big ton of fun let me tell you. They're all just like Marky Mark in Three Kings, it's true.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't, but it always kind of seemed like Three Kings got the mindset of today's (or 12 years ago, or whatever) soldier right, between Mark and Spike.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously this was an isolated incident or else CNN would've been showing this kind of stuff all the time!

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The mere fact I know about it really disturbs me. I don't like this feeling at all.

I've seen worse on tv news and I'm not talking about bombs.
People getting thrown out of bridges then shot etcetc

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jarhead" is a good book. Better than Three Kings by a long shot anyway.

Realize that when you join the armed forces, even the regular army, you have literally hundreds of jobs to choose from, and regular infantry duty is at the very bottom of the list. It is a rare knucklehead who goes into the recruiter's office and signs up to be in the infantry specifically, unless they want to try out for special forces.

Basically when you're talking about regular ground-pounders you're talking about the bottom of the barrel in a lot of cases. I still have respect for them but lord knows I need a few beers under my belt before I can begin to have a conversation with one. Yikes.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually saw this CNN report when it was first broadcast. At the time I don't remember thinking that the soldier was commenting on the preceding footage specifically (or that that particular soldier had even been involved in that shootout). It seemed more like he was describing a general response to those kind of situations.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, phew.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Just responding to Dan's initial comment, dyson.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)
