Should I become an inspector for the city?

I am seriously thinking of looking into trying to get a job working for the Licenses & Inspections Dept. of the city. I am already a city employee. I think I would make a good inspector. I have that sort of eye for trouble. On the other hand, it could get a little scarey depending on where I had to go and who I had to deal with (both in terms of dangerous neighborhoods and landlords with organized crime ties, which I'm convinced, possibly irrationally, is not that unusual around here). What about crazy dogs coming after me? Would I end up getting killed? Would I be too good of an inspector? The ones I have dealt with have impressed me with their devotion to enforcing The Code. It could be the ultimate revenge against every bad landlord I have ever had (and I've moved around a lot).

Would it just get boring after a while? (More boring than my current work?)

Now I'm having all these fantasies of a 70's cop show version of being an inspector.

I bet the hush money would be good.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, all those problems you listed will dysappear if you become a crooked inspector.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dangerous for me, which would probably mean most poor African-American neighborhoods, for starters. I think it's unrealistic to pretend otherwise.

But I don't want to be a crooked inspector. I want to be the one inspector the machine could not corrupt.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely there is a freemasonry of city inspectors and, once you were inducted, the inmost secrets of the craft would be revealed as you rose through the degrees. Your inspector-brethren would guide you in the paths of righteousness, providing safe conduct among the dogs of organized crime, bad neighbors and renegade cats. Just be sure to avoid the Dark Side, OK?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

are MOVE still around? maybe you can inspect their premises.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, thanks. "The walls of your roof-top bunker need to be at least two inches thick, if you are going to use those sorts of assault weapons."

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(Of course, the city mishandled that situation in a way that unethically endangered innocent lives and vast stretches of property. Not to mention that it was just plain stupid. But, of course, MOVE was a real problem for the neighborhood.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Not only endangered innocent lives, but took innocent lives.)

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dept. of Weights & Measures is where all the action is... I think that's a county agency, though.

Andy, Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i agree 100% w/ you there, RS. i remember when it happened, i was teased by classmates 'cause they knew my Dad was from Philly (and we were the oddballs in my town cause we were Philly transplants and not Brooklyn transplants ... oh yeah, lovely memories).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess i'm scaring you off this job? though rendell and street have cleaned the town up some since goode, no?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

I was hired for my first professional city government job today, woot, and it's not too different from this. The title is Planning Technician; I work with the city code compliance officer to help review the permit application process for developers and residents who're just adding on, etc. Deal with zoning violations, do on-site inspections, meet with commissioners and board members etc. It's a small (80,000) college town so there's only 13 of us in the planning department.

I'm also a grad student about to start writing my thesis during this coming Fall and Spring semester, so I have plenty of late nights in the library cut out for me, juggling that and a full-time job. Anyway, I'm qualified to participate in any threads about urban planning or ORDINANCES now if anyone dares to thrill ILX with such threads.
