I just want to see some of weird clothing designs, and arty models, to either laugh at or appreciate.

John Galliano

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

So I've always wondered, why is fashion like what appears in this thread made? It can't actually be for people to buy it and wear it to cocktail parties and, whatever, balls and stuff, can it?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe these designers make the really radical stuff to catch people's eyes and make them more likely to buy other clothes that they design that could actually be worn somewhere other than the runway.

I'm obviously clueless, does anyone know how this all works?

For the most part that's right. In theory the designers will make these garments if a customer specifically orders them. However, the outrageous stuff usually appears only during the runway show, or sometimes the outfit is loaned or given to actresses or other celebs going to award shows (see: most of Bjork's wardrobe).

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, like what jed said some are for dance/ stage performances. LIke Merce Cunningham or Moses Pendalton stuff has lots of odd outfits.

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the other part is that sometimes one or two really outrageous outfits are the, I dunno, strong argument to the rest of the collection's weak argument. That is to say, they go overboard on one artistic statement in order to set a context for the rest of it. Sometimes they're just having fun. Sometimes (Galliano does this a lot) there really is a manageable outfit underneath all the crazy hair and makeup and accessories.

woah - thats a good 'un.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Galliano's been working this kabuki thing for a few seasons now (oops, above should be spring 2003) and everybody slobbers over it, but I don't get him at all. I'm sure it has something to do with design and tailoring specifically, which I don't have a background in.

Like here's a Gaultier couture fromt the same season, and I like him. It's hard to pick one outfit from the whole collection and view it out of context though, like this season was all about nautical themes (a Gaultier perrenial) so there were sailor-suit dresses nd mermaids and lots of wispy organic seaweed-looking things and little touches of seaports like Bahrain and Hong Kong and New York in the 20s.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and then of course there's Imitation of Christ. (link nsfw)

True. Another factor: if the label has a sufficiently profitable accessory or perfume line, or otherwise is doing well on licensing, the clothing component doesn't necessarily have to make a profit. The purpose of over-the-top catwalk shows is less to actually sell the clothes and more to keep the brand in the fashion magazines and enhance its image. (However, in recent years a lot of the old-line Paris fashion houses have been acquired by profit-minded conglomerates, and after every season there are rumors that the money men are pissed off at how much the creatives spent on the show.)

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the Watanabe, the Gaultier and the second Galliano.

The Galliano-geisha outfit would make a killer costume for a comicbook character.
