I should have posted this long ago. Already it is dated, or at least overdue.

Still, I am posting it now as Ken yesterday began CHAMPIONS' LEAGUE POPMASTER with a complex new set of rules. We can follow the league's progress on this thread, as well as relate other ideas and stories about Ken.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to be on Popmaster. Perhaps now I am unemployed, I can. Ken makes me laugh. He's quite rude sometimes, and has made Super Furries, Gorkys and Flaming Lips his singles of the week on past occasions. He is also the only DJ I have ever heard play the Trash Can Sinatras.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So, what happened on CHAMPIONS' LEAGUE POPMASTER *today*?

the popfox, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Ailsa, did you hear the end of CL Popmaster? (24.12.2003 it was.)

Popmaster is now back to normal scoring rules.

Today's questions included: "[names of all the Sex Pistols} were in which band?"

Three in Ten was the Stranglers; yesterday's was REM. I was able to complete these on time.

Did anyone hear J Vine trying to imitate K Bruce yesterday? In itself that was not good, but the bit where they talked over the intro of 'Hotel California' was.

The other day KB played a song by The Sands (??). It was generic Lennonesque pop and I liked it a lot.

This shows that it was THE STANDS, with 'Here She Comes Again'.

It also shows where I heard Voice of the Beehive.

I wish I had not missed the McCartney, Bowie, Tears for Fears, Neil Young and Travis. I am quite surprised that I managed to miss that much radio.

More from Ken at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/bruce/

the kenfox, Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to post to this having heard Ken playing Brand New Friend the other day. He was on about how some guy on World Idol sounded like Lloyd Cole - he was also talking like a pirate. I think everyone should listen to Ken.

I didn't hear the final of Champions League Popmaster, but the rounds were reasonably easy, someone got 9 points just for recognising Young at Heart by the Bluebells.

This was the soundtrack to my car journey into Glasgow on Tuesday, and very nice it was too.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I heard that "Young At Heart" 9-point scandal too!!

But many of the other questions were much harder.

the kenfox, Thursday, 8 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Today Ken played B&S's 'I'm A Cuckoo' - a notably edited version - and pronounced it Record of the Week. 'They formed in Glasgow', quoth Ken, 'as did I'.

He followed it with 'Live And Let Die'! I wish PJ Miller had heard it.

the kenfox, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
POPMASTER: LIVE!!

It's a helicopter repairman who lives in Lancashire. He drives to work on the new M6 toll-road. He used to be in the Navy. Married since 14.11.2003, to Amanda, an accountant in Chester. He lives in Chorley. He plays footy (leaky defence), reads a lot of books, has just started an OU degree. He likes the Thrills and Train, who KB says are 'well supported by R2'.

Which Bonus Questions to go for? DOUBLE TOP. Only 5 points to beat!

QUESTIONS

1. Bryan Adams. 3

2. Michelle MacManus - x.

3. Bonus: it was R Williams and N Kidman. 6 points

4. Genesis: hm, I don't know.

5. Which year? 1980 I'll go for. It was right!! 3

6. Wet Wet Wet - original singer: oh, it's Macca innit? No, RINGO!! No - sod it - Joe Cocker.

7. 1969 - hm, Brigitte Bardot? No, Sandie Shaw

8. FAB = Thunderbirds!! 3

9. Wonder Stuff: who wrote 'Dizzy'? PJ Proby? No: Tommy Roe

10. Lindisfarne? No it was GEORDIE.

He got 18 points. I score... 15. Not great.

the kenfox, Monday, 23 February 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, 3 in 10 coming up. Name 3 hits by one band in 10 seconds. Wish me luck.

Real Gone Ki,d Wages Day, Queen of the New Year, Your Town, Only Tender Loe

- that was how my answers came out. The band in question was... DEACON BLUE!!

Wow.

the bluefox, Monday, 23 February 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you should read the redistribution of wealth thread. or maybe just the posts that mention maynard keynes.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 23 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Today, Ken has played Kiss Me by Stephen Tin Tin Duffy, he is now playing the Scissor Sisters, and there were questions about Belle and Sebastian, Deee-lite and Avril Lavigne in the first round of Popmaster.

This is like my dream show. Kind of.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

*He followed it with 'Live And Let Die'! I wish PJ Miller had heard it.*

I wish I'd heard it too. I don't know about you, but I find that 'song title made out of words from different songs' quiz devillishly hard.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions are reforming for two one-off shows. I read it in the paper.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

They are playing in Glasgow. Are you coming to see them? I may go, possibly.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking of reviving this thread today and I didn't have to!

Wee Ailsa, you missed out that the first round of Popmaster also included the question 'Who had a hit with "Real Gone Kid"?'!!!! To follow that up with the B&S one was just too much.

Miller is right, the other quiz is just too hard.

the bellefox, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I'll be going to see Lloyd, it would be too much, but I might get the deluxe reissue with demos and B-sides.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I got three out of four this morning, but its the short words which are the hardest. And he should have actually played Stay On These Roads too.
What was the On?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the one I didn't get either. I can't remember what it was.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, after the Foxgloves got played on US college radio yesterday I'm sure the Pinefox has an all new favourite DJ.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Foxgloves were in several US college radio station's top 10 of 2003 lists, so La Kearney will have to do more than that to make her our favourite deejay. (Is this how payola works?)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think payola means you have to pay her. I'm sure she won't mind.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

???

the blissfox, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Blissfox may find this thread informative.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is EVERY contestant on Popmaster from the provinces or, indeed, the... Celtic Fringes?

(Not a complaint: I don't want to listen to Londoners.)

the beebfox, Monday, 15 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone hear Ken B's gag last week or so about how the percussion on Norah Jones'' 'Sunrise' (?) sounds like two ping-pong players? What was so good about it was the way that he said: "Each day this week, two ping-pong players will be heard in the background of this record... and *today*, it's [names two ping-pong players]".

See, the thing was Steady Mike standard.

the kenfox, Thursday, 18 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, on Popmaster yesterday: wee Tracy Anderson from Irvine, Ayrshire (?), answering or failing to answer questions on D Stewart and B Gaskin, the Associates and Rick(y) Nelson (actually she only knew the first of that trio).

Why so many Scots on Popmaster?

the kenfox, Thursday, 18 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing to do for old folk round here.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 18 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I listen to this?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 18 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The programme? Yes.

the bluefox, Thursday, 18 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to round one this morning. Can't rememebr anything about it. What I really like is Pause for Thought or whatever on Terry Wogan.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

b-but don't you like Terry Wogan mentioning ILX?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I would prefer it if he stopped lurking and posted a bit.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I still want to know who is coming to see Lloyd Cole and The Commotions.

Please.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You should have the courage of your convictions. It's OK to like him if that's what you think is right.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 19 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been enjoying The Divine Comedy live in session on Ken's programme this morning. Also Ken was quite good about the sad loss of the writer of 'Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner'. Usually he's just a sarcy bastard.

I've noticed that ladies don't do quite so well on Popmaster.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I avoided the session, partly by accident.

It's not wholly true about the ladies - not as much as you might think.

Thanks for listening.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

even I listened yesterday, and got the three Culture club hits in ten seconds

chris (chris), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What I enjoyed about the session was that the young man was so polite. Well done, Chris - three Culture Club hits in ten seconds! Was that from a standing start?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I even stumbled in the fading seconds after getting karma Chameleon and do you really want to hurt me quite quickly

chris (chris), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish we could get you doing this on the website.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS IS GREAT... INTERNET

the beebfox, Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken is about to begin!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you hear the TRUCK DRIVER today who thought that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' was called 'Into The Dark'?

If TRUCK DRIVERS don't know these things, who will?

the brucefox, Friday, 2 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

His girlfriend is also a TRUCK DRIVER. I thought the standard was quite low this morning. Ken is away next week :-(

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No! I am unemployed for next week and thought I would get to join in the Ken fun. I could even have tried to redress the alleged lack of women on Popmaster. Does this mean I have to listen to Mark Goodier or someone instead?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Do it, Ailsa!!

the pinefox, Saturday, 3 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

After all, he is the man who's got the best music.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He will be, next week, one of them.

It is funny that you remember that, when you don't listen to R2.

the pinefox, Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you done it yet, Ailsa? The replacement guy seems personable enough (I only listened to the handover) but of course you could bond with Ken over shared Scottishness. We would all enjoy that.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 5 April 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

PS / I heard 'Keith Orville' too! And Ken started playing the track a second time!

the bellefox, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

the song's called Duel Pf

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

I can tell you what I think of Paul Morley. He no longer interests me enough to listen to him on "A Jolly Good Read" or whatever it's called, which he was on on R4 the other afternoon. It's because I "knew" he wasn't going to tell thr truth, because he never does.

I wake up in time for Sarah Kennedy.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 January 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

PJM, it's not often that I can say this of you, but that post started poorly and went downhill! I mean - Sarah Kennedy!

I suppose you were merely stating a fact, though, not actually saying that you listened to her. Maybe you wake up in time for her, then make a point of not listening to her.

That programme was probably a repeat of the one with Daniela Nardini reading Angela Carter and that lad from The Royle Family reading the Buzzcocks. Unless it is a different one. The one I am thinking of was actually called, 'With Great Pleasure'.

I should have known what that song was called, really, Porkpie, but alas, I did not, but now, thanks to you, I do.

Ken's contestants today were the worst ever! A nice lady who sang folk in the 1960s who scored 3, with Ken's help - and a dour fellow keen to say nothing (though he had rung a radio show) who scored ... 5. This is out of 39!

Then Ken played 'Layla'.

the kenfox, Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes I switch the radio on and think to myself, "I know that woman's voice - who is it?" and continue to ponder in this vein for a few minutes. Then it dawns on me who she is and I switch her off in favour of the wacky Today team on Radio 4.

With Great Pleasure could be right. Anna Ford was also billed. To listen to it I would have had to switch off the music I was listening to.

I enjoyed Nardini on Balderdash and Piffle.

Those contestants sound awful!

It must be Dictionary Corner time soon.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 26 January 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Is that on the television?

It's Ken's birthday tomorrow!

That makes me realize - his birthday is the same as James Joyce's!

the finefox, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

With Great Pleasure is different, you insufferable oafs. It was A Good Read, where people pick good reads. I heard it but misssed the Morley choice. It sounded as though he had deliberately chosen a novel that subverted the idea of "a good read". This is, in fact, what Sue MacGregor said about it in a dream I had the next night. I didn't much care for Sue McG as a Today host, but I like her on A Good Read, though not as much as that kindly old buffer that used to do it.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Insufferable oafs!

I can't believe the Ken Bruce thread has descended to this kind of flame war.

Happy birthday Ken Bruce!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 2 February 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

Say happy birthday to Ken Bruce, RJG.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

Was he ringing him up?

He wasn't on Popmaster.

It is funny the way that N. likes the way that people present programmes, as long as they do it in his dreams.

What was Morley's unreadable novel, then? I want to know.

the pinefox, Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

No, I just wanted him to say it on the thread because he had just said it to James Joyce on that thread. Really, you had to be there.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 3 February 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

This morning I was up in time for the Shipping Forecast, Prayer For The Day (crap) and Farming Today (excellent, as ever).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 3 February 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Last week on Chris Evans' show, Rob Brydon was on, and he did an utterly brilliant impression of Ken. I didn't hear the show (come on, it was Chris Evans), but they have been playing the Ken Bruce impression bit as a trailer all week for the sort of hilarity that could be expected should you choose to listen to the annoying ginger chump.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 February 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

Programme about fishing in N Ireland this morning. I now know how to catch a pike when it's cold.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Saturday, 18 February 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Offer it a blanket?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 18 February 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

No - dead fish laying on the bottom of the canal, cunningly concealing a hook.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Saturday, 18 February 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Popmaster approaches!

the kenfox, Monday, 20 February 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think I beat both contestants. And I got the 3 Lionel Richie numbers for 3 in 10.

Ken is playing Billy Joel's song about the Italian restaurant - again! I have turned it off. Joel is such a HAM!

the kenfox, Monday, 20 February 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

i missed it, i was out with edith. she is on my knee now. ths morning she threw up on me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 20 February 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

What a waste of money! I want my licnce fee back!

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 20 April 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

I don't want it back, but I do want most of it to go to Desmond Carrington.

I wonder how much Craig Charles gets for his 6 Music funk show.

I was shocked to see apicture of Ken Bruce in the paper this week. Does anyone look less like their voice than Ken Bruce? (if you know what I mean)

I don't know what you mean, I don't think!

Love PJM's Carrington point.

I am struck by Radcliffe - such a blokeish man of the people, yet earning so many multiples what any of us do. I am slightly disenchanted, or whatever.

the kenfox, Friday, 21 April 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Popmaster on Monday and some geezer comes on and he gets 39 points! That's top marks! 147! 180! He was a bit boring though. I got about two questions right.

I think really Ken Bruce earns his money by being good at Popmaster and never getting in a muddle.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Ken Bruce earns his money by getting high ratings.

Were you not listening yesterday? Getting all his words mixed up, and he read out an answer instead of giving the question. It was just like when Richard Allinson sits in for him.

How does The Richard Allinson earn a living these days?

In a possibly sinister development, the source of the leak of the radio stars' salaries is named:

I had no idea that the founder of Wal-Mart was reduced to temping for the BBC.

Now, if it had been Funky Seb, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Radio 2 really has gone downhill since the recent changes.
Chris Evans is trying to adhere to the drivetime format and audibly failing miserably.
Johnnie Walker's turned into a ghastly Godhead on Sundays.
Stuart Maconie is the most boring broadcaster on Earth.
Was that the best they could do?

Ken Bruce's first Popmaster contestant did terribly - only nine points! And one of the questions he got right was Timmy Mallet-related.

Now for contestant 2, from Walsall Wood.

I was disturbed by a phonecall during that second round, but I think he managed to do even worse than the first one, and then the first one got his 3 in 10 (Cyndi Lauper).

This thread revival is a roundabout way of telling you that I am lurching into cabin fever in my new role as stay-at-home dad.

Someone called "Deano" has just phoned in about the traffic.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 12 July 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Celebrity Popmaster!

Sophie Ellis Bexxxxtor vs Bev Something (not Bevan)!

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

It was Beverley Knight. They were both terrible. It is Celebrity Popmaster because they aren't allowed to do real Popmaster due to not being allowed to do phone-ins for prizes on teh Beeb.

BBC apologises for Sarah Kennedy's race gaffe
Sarah Kennedy shocked listeners by announcing that she could not see black men in the dark

Jack Malvern
Sarah Kennedy, the Radio 2 disc jockey, has been reprimanded after telling listeners she could not see black people in the dark.

The 57-year-old presenter, who has been admonished for making another racially insensitive gaffe in the past, made the remark while discussing the need for children to wear reflective clothing on their way to school so they can be seen by drivers.

“That’s not just children," she said. "You know what happened to me yesterday. It was this black guy. It’s lucky he opened his mouth to yawn or do something and I saw him. He was wearing a black hat, black clothes and he was just invisible.”

Her comments prompted a stream of protest from listeners on message boards. One complained: “This is just one in a long line of irresponsible remarks from Sarah Kennedy, but the BBC don’t have a problem with her.”

Another said: “I’m a great fan of Radio 2’s early morning programme, and teach radio as part of my job role. I’d be disgusted to play back those comments to students.”

A listener added: “OK in 1957 but not PC in 2007.”

Kennedy has previously opined that black men dominate athletics because they are accustomed to being pursued by lions.

A spokeswoman for the corporation apologised for the remark and said that the presenter had been "spoken to". Kennedy attracted an audience of 4.51 million in the third quarter of 2007 - 10,000 fewer than the same period last year.

Other visitors to message boards rallied to the disc jockey's defence. One wrote: “Leaving aside the fact she said ’until he opened his mouth’, she was making a point that too many pedestrians (and I include myself in that) wear dark clothing at night.”

Another said skin tone was relevant in the issue of seeing pedestrians in the dark, stating: “This is nothing to do with prejudice - it is a fact based on the science of light reflecting off objects.”

Kennedy prompted concern earlier this year after slurring her way through her show.

She mispronounced words and let sentences tail off in a rambling performance, which included offering to send some “panties” to soldiers in Afghanistan and referring to the Princess of Wales wearing a “pink polka blot” dress. She also said that the victim in the Phil Spector murder trial had had a "gunshot to the month". The BBC said a sore throat had caused breathing difficulties.

In 1999, she caused complaints when she described a clergyman as an "old prune" to his face and called her fellow DJ Ken Bruce an "old fool". She also accused a newsreader of soiling her underwear.

Other off-beam comments have included, a propos of nothing: "Fish and chips - again. It's me and the head of Radio 4, gob on a stick. I'll be having dinner tonight." Also, after playing a Boyzone record: "I need you, I need you! Can you mow? Have you a mower? Hee hee!"

Simon Mayo is only 7 years younger than him? The push to attract slighter younger listeners continues!

Fat Penne (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 10 November 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

Is this actually going to happen or is just contract shenanigans?

Fat Penne (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 10 November 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

Goodness only knows. What's seven years when it comes to giving R2 listeners their morning dose of Travis and Athlete?
