ILX adverse to spelling?

So I've been noticing lately that I've been making a lot of stupid, simple spelling mistakes on ILX. Could it, just like TV, be making me stupider?

what about grammar?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame Ramosi.

YOU LEAVE HER OUT OF THIS RJG

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that makes me sad, actually.

Poor old Idiot Pete.

t/s: adverse vs averse.

I am annoyed at my failure to employ the subjunctive on the Robert Palmer/Smiths thread.

ad·verse
P

Pronunciation Key (d-vûrs, dvûrs)
adj.

1.Acting or serving to oppose; antagonistic: adverse criticism.
2.Contrary to one's interests or welfare; harmful or unfavorable: adverse circumstances.
3.Moving in an opposite or opposing direction: adverse currents.
4.Archaic. Placed opposite.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but which side are you on?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

a·verse
P

Pronunciation Key (-vûrs)
adj.

Having a feeling of opposition, distaste, or aversion; strongly disinclined: investors who are
averse to taking risks.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

they're synonyms.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

homonyms

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I lot of "spelling" errors are simply typos. Someone types "to" instead of "too." For some reason I seem to do this more often when I am online, possibly because I am typing faster than I would ordinarily?

Also, I think "adverse" is indeed misused in the thread title; and "averse" is not a homonym of "adverse."

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

if you say it real fast it is

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and I mean, ILX: does it it have an adverse affect on spelling?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. I think that in the long run, the more you read and write, the better your spelling becomes, even if you aren't particularly paying attention to it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I lot of 'spelling' errors

Shit! Exactly.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that the problem is two-fold:
1. I feel more urgency to hit the "submit" button, and so am not as conscientious.
2. I'm posting in pretty high volume, so even though the actual percantage of mistakes remains the same, the actual incidence of errors goes up.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

who acers as long as your getting the point across? spelling only matters in spelling bees, duh.

the angry cowboy (dick), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was in grade school, doing well on spelling quizzes = a place in heaven. Stupid teaching nuns.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I know them well. I could never get "tomorrow" right. I got smacked a number of times, and had to keep trying until I finally got it.

the angry cowboy (dick), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Who cares about spelling errors? As long as it's readable. I mean, I hope the editors at Farrar Straus & Giroux fix up the typos when they come out with the hardcover edition of ILX, but who needs their idle web conversation to be typoless?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

who needs their idle web conversation to be typoless?

I do.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Not typoless perhaps, but people could at least TRY once in a while.

That said, I see fewer typos/spelling errors here than I do in most other internet communities. There's still a lot of dumbass content on ILX, but at least you're spelling your dick jokes right.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

spec-cock-ular!

it cheers my heart after a long day of cringeful interaction w/ sub-standard student specimens to read a little of ilx's flawless mastery of the rudiments of communication
